#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Shirdi Ke Saainbaabaa-1977)
————————————

Today’s song is from the film ‘Shirdi Ke Saainbaabaa-1977’. I have earlier presented a song from this movie which has been close to my heart since many years, and had shared lyrics for one song from this movie which I liked very much. This movie has some good songs and a few of them have been permanently embedded in my memory ever since I watched it in ‘1977’. I vaguely remember to have watched this movie with my younger brothers and cousins at Akola . This must in the summer vacations of that year ‘1977’. Also, I vaguely remember that this movie was given a ‘tax free’ status.

From the year ‘1977’ I remember to have watched movies like ‘Agent Vinod’, ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Chaachaa Bhateejaa’, ‘Chhailaa Baaboo’, ‘Dharam Veer’, ‘Dildaar’, ‘Dream Girl’, ‘Hum Kisise Kam Nahin’, ‘Khoon Paseenaa’, and ‘Shirdi Ke Saainbaabaa’. May be we also watched ‘Yahi Hai Zindagi’, but I could not recall it now. ‘1977’ is the year mainly remembered for the successful movies by Manmohan Desai like ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Chaachaa Bhateejaa’, ‘Dharam Veer’ and ‘Parvarish’. Other prominent movies of this year were ‘Ham Kisise Kam Nahin’, ‘Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye’, ‘Apnaapan’, ‘Khoon Paseenaa’, ‘Gharonda’, ‘Inkaar’, ‘Swaami’, ‘Kinaaraa’, ‘Shatranj Ke Khilaadi’, ‘Bhoomika’, and ‘Khattaa Meethhaa’. I think ‘Shirdi Ke Saainbaabaa’ also deserves a to be in this list as this was a well-made, well watched and well-appreciated by the audience even if it was not a highly successful movie.

Today I present one more song from this movie which I like very much and I often break into humming it. I had never forgotten this song even after the passage of many years. The lyrics are nice, and its soulful singing by all the singers leaves deep impact on me every time I listen to it. I hope readers will also enjoy listening to this song.

‘Shirdi Ke Saainbaabaa’ (passed by Censor Board on 28.02.1977) was directed by Ashok Bhushan for ‘Saain Shyam Movies’. It was presented by Manoj Kumar and Saain devotees. And the movie was produced by ‘Sarla Charities Trust’. Pandurang Dixit was the co-director and production controller of this movie. The cast of this movie included Sudhir Dalavi as ‘Saainbaabaa’, with Manmohan Krishna, Shrikant Moghe, Raj Mehra, B.M. Vyas, Birbal, Preetam Beli, Chanda, Vatsala Deshmukh, Ratnamala, Suman Dharmadhikari, Jyotsana Kirpekar, Bhavna, Nazeer Kashmiri, C.S. Dubey, Master Titu, Master Raju,

It also had Usha Chavan, ‘Laxman’ Chawla, Kumari Mahalaxami and Saain devotees in special appearance. And also making special appearance in the movie were Rajendra Kumar, Prem Nath, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha and Manoj Kumar, Madan Puri, Sachin, Kishan Dhawan, Paintal, Dheeraj, Satish, Kuljeet.

This movie was based on Govindrao Dabholkar’s ‘Sri Saain Satcharitra’ and experiences of devotees of Saainbaabaa. Screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Manoj Kumar. Dev Kishan wrote the story of this movie and was also the associate writer of this movie. Editing of this movie was done by V. V. Kamat. Audiography for this movie was done by Raghuvir Date while art direction was done by Kanu Desai. And Special effects were by Dahyabhai.

This movie had nine songs in it that were written by Manoj Kumar, Pandurang Dixit and Dev Kishan. Music for this movie was composed by Pandurang Dixit. Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Jani Babu, Anoop Jalota, Anuradha and Dilraj Kaur had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Music for this song is composed by Pandurang Dixit.

Today’s song is sung by Mohd Rafi, Jani Babu, Anup Jalota, and Anuradha. On screen we can see Manmohan, Vatsala Deshmukh, Dheeraj, Paintal, Madan Puri, Raj Mehra, and others ( I am unable to identify couple of the female actors lip syncing the song and few other male actors). We can also see Sudhir Dalvi, Birbal, Bharat Vyas and others in the picturisation of this song.

In the movie this song happens when Saint Saain baabaa leaves his body and travels to help his devotee (Tahsildar Chandorkar and his daughter who is about to deliver a child) on the way his meeting with Baijaa Bai. Before that Baabaa had told his devotee that if his body has no indication of life nobody should worry and cry and ask Shyama to write ‘tera saain yahaan thhaa, yahaan hai, yahaan rahegaa’. Saain baabaa’s lifeless body stays around seventy-two hours before he come backs to life and into his body, after this song. (Meanwhile his opponents had already prepared a site for his cremation.)

Let us now listen to this wonderful song.

Lyrics for the song are by Manoj Kumar and music is composed by Pandurang Dixit.

5401 Post No. : 17723

This is the song, part of which is shot near to the Thajiwas glacier, near Sonamarg, Kashmir. This is the route going to Laddakh, travelling east of Srinagar.   Further on this road falls Kargil area, about which many people have told me is much too beautiful to miss.  Laddakh is a sight to behold too.  I have missed both Laddakh and Kargil, but hope to visit in future, in-sha-Allah.

When we spoke to local people and guides in the valley at Sonamarg, one of them told us that many Hindi film songs are filmed in the area and very near to the Thajiwas glacier.  He mentioned a song from the 1982 film ‘Satte Pe Satta’. I forgot all about this and only discovered this song accidentally.  It is indeed filmed nearer to the glacier, than we could travel.   A few decades ago, the vehicles were allowed to go up to the valley where the glacier is near, and the rivers and waterfalls start, fed by the Thajiwas glacier.   Obviously, the location is visible from the highway, but far away for us city people to walk up or even ride a horse. I clicked great many photos, to capture different fingers of the main glacier, whatever I could see from one side i.e. the highway and Sonamarg side. It must be magnificent to look at from the other sides, which are truly remote and not habitable areas. This is only one glacier of the 10,000 which fall in the Indian territory. One needs several lives to fully watch and savour the magnificence of the Himalayan Mountain range, and its various attributes and aspects.  The Himalayas were formed due to the friction and constant northward movement of the Indian plate against the Asian plate, over thousands of years.

This is my previous post on Kashmir visit – “Jiya Jiya Re Jiya Re“.

Todays’s song is from the film ‘Satte pe Satta’ (1982), which is mostly shot in Kashmir over 40 years ago, and one part of it is near the famous glacier. Must be in fair weather, the full star cast of the film went up there to shoot in bright sunlight. But they all returned to the base farmhouse/ farmstead where rest of the song is filmed. The singers are RD BurmanKishore KumarAsha BhosleBhupinder SinghSapan ChakrabortyBasu Chakraborty and the music is composed by RD Burman.  The lyricist is Gulshan Bawra and it is the title song of the film.

Interestingly, Gulshan Bawra has rhymed the words satte pe satta with the word albatta.  This gives us a unique word, and as far as I am aware, used only once in a Hindi film song.  The word is a common usage affirmative / emphasising in cultured chaste Urdu.   In old Hindi films this word is common, in dialogues, where the speaker wants to say or assert a view, despite this or inspite of that, ‘albatta‘, the truth prevails 😊.

اَلبَتَّہکےاردومعانی پوشیدہ فعلمتعلق یقیناً، قطعیطورپر، بےشک، ضرور، یقینہےکہ، لیکن، مگر، اتناضروریہے

albatta. अलबत्ताالبتہ. although, but, on the other hand. Isth

This explains the origin of the word.

Is the English word ‘albeit’ derived from the Urdu word ‘Albatta’?

No, the word ‘albeit’ is not derived from the Urdu word ‘Albatta’. ‘Although’ is a conjunction that means ‘in spite of the fact that’ or ‘even though’. It is derived from the Old English word ‘þeah’ which means ‘even though’ or ‘although’. The Urdu word ‘albatta‘ is a conjunction that means ‘although’ or ‘notwithstanding’. It is derived from the Arabic word ‘al-batta‘ which means ‘however’ or ‘despite’.

I have fond memories of watching this film at Minerva (or was it Apsara?) in 1982. We lived in the BEST officer’s quarters and the many families decided to watch the film collectively.  The tickets were booked through the theater management, via the PSU’s good offices, as the supplier of electricity. I remember the theater management had put up a welcome message for the BEST officers and their families on screen, before the start of the film.

I am truly amazed to have had such unique experiences of movie watching, in theaters. Some memories, like being hit with a clothes hanger, and being forced to go to watch ‘Muqaddar ka Sikander’ (1978); and leaving the Liberty cinema in interval after not watching ‘Lekin’ (1990), walking up to Maratha Mandir to watch a re-release matinee show of ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ (1960) in knee deep water-logged streets; the experience of watching coins being thrown at the screen on the song “Tere Chehre Mein Wo Jaadu Hai” in a dilapidated theatre in Belgaum while watching ‘Dharmata’ (1975) sometime in the mid 80’s; the best of which is my friend being told by the usher, “No madam, it is waiting for you” at Regal cinema where we were late for the show of ‘Gone With The Wind’  (1939), in reply to her question “Has the movie started?”. There are more such memories, which will surface in time.  I will share them in future posts.

Hullo Atuldom

A very Happy Navaratri to all. The date corresponds to the first day after Amavasya in the month of Ashwin of the sixth month (as per the Solar Bengali calendar) and seventh month (as per the Indian National lunar calendar of the Deccan Plateau) overlapping the months of September and October of the Gregorian calendar. It is the Sharath Navaratri. The period when we worship the Mother Goddess in the form of Durga Lakshmi and Saraswati. Additionally, this is also the time when we have Ram Leela celebrations across the country.

That is why I have chosen a song featuring Ram Leela. We can see Dev Anand, Janakidas, Premnath, Paintal, on stage enacting the Lanka dahan part of the Ramayan. It begins with Seeta maiyya crying under a tree in Ashok Vatika and  Hanuman seeing her from atop a tree. Sita maiyya (who is the actress?) sees Hanuman when he falls from the tree (I don’t know if all Ram Leelas have such comic elements. Remember there was a similar comic Ram Leela in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Naram Garam’). Ravan’s son Meghnad is played by Sharat Saxena. Did anyone recognize the Kumbhkaran? It is the actor who has a Guinness book entry for playing a police inspector maximum number of times. Yes, Jagdish Raj. Then we have two Hema Malini in the audience.

I could only recognize Manna Dey’s voice as the male playback, there is one more male singer. The female voice belongs to Anuradha Paudwal. The song is written by Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant Pyaarelal are the music directors. Also we can hear Dev Anand’s voice in all the dialogues in between.  All-in-all an entertaining song from the 1976 released Chetan Anand directed ‘Jaaneman’.

The storyline of the film had Dev Anand playing a taxi driver and Hema Malini in the double role of sisters -Santo & Banto. Plus there were Premnath, Ajit, Paintal, Janakidas Sharat Saxena Jagdish Raaj etc. in the cast.

I have read somewhere that it was a movie in the 25th year of Navketan Films. The movie has 6 songs and the blog has 4 of them (one is a three part song).  The last song from this movie was posted in 2016. Today’s song is sort of in the same category as the iconic song from ‘Munim ji’ (1955) – “O Shivji Bihaane Chale Paalki Sajaaye Ke

Born on 26 September, 1923, today is also the 99th birth anniversary of Dev Anand. With this song, we remember him and celebrate his birth anniversary.blog

Editor’s note:-This song is the 200th song picturised on Dev Anand in the blog.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 102 # In Remembrance – Jaikishan #
————————————————————————————

Today 12th Sep 2020 is forty-ninth remembrance day of the genius music director Jaikishan of Shankar-Jaikishan duo.

Jaikishan was born on 04th November 1929 at Vansda (in Navsari district, Gujarat) and passed away on 12th September 1971 at Bombay (now Mumbai, Maharashtra). He was only 41 when he passed away and his death shook the entire film industry then.

As a tribute to him here is a song from the 1971 movie – ‘Yaar Mera’. One song from this movie – “Dil Ki Kitaab Kori Hai, Kori Hi Rehne Do” – has already been presented on the blog by Sudhir ji on 13th Sep’2013 with a heartfelt tribute to Jaikishan remembering him on his 42nd remembrance anniversary. Today we will listen another song from the same movie.

‘Yaar Mera’ was released after Jaikishan’s death and the movie was dedicated to his memory. The movie begins with this ‘couplet’. I am unable to identify the voice uttering these words, which plays in the background of the dedication title.

jo shaam savere miltaa thha
phoolon ki tarah se khiltaa thha,
aye maut, tujhe maut aa jaaye
kyon yaar ko mere chheen liyaa

Shankar Jaikishan ruled the music charts in 1971 with their “Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhaana” ranking top of the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ list. In 1971 from the total 115 released movies, Shankar Jaikishan had composed music for as many as seventeen movies plus the un-released movie ‘Bombay Talkie’ making it to total eighteen movies. Here is the list of movies where Shankar-Jaikishan composed the music and that were released (or passed by Censor Board) in 1971,

S No Movie Passed by Censor Board on Lyricist/s
01 Albelaa 14.10.1971 Hasrat Jaipuri

17 Yaar Mera 29.11.1971 Hasrat Jaipuri, Neeraj, SH Bihari
18 Bombay Talkie (UR) 19.02.1971 Hasrat Jaipuri, Usha Iyyer

Other than songs of ‘Andaaz’ (two songs), the songs of ‘Main Sundar Hoon’ (also two songs) made it to the list of annual Binaca Geetmala of 1971 from the above list of movies. And that can explain how tough the competition was that year.

The song “Dil Ki Kitaab Kori Hai. . .“was the only popular song from the today’s movie and it was frequently heard on radio during that time. As mentioned above this song has already been posted on the blog.

The film was directed by Atmaram for RS Productions, Bombay. Raja Ram and Satish Wagle were the producers of this movie and Jayendra Pandya was the Associate Producer of this movie. Story of this movie was written by Anand Dutta. Dialogues and screenplay of this movie were written by Abrar Alvi. Editing for this movie was done by YG Chowhan, and he was assisted by EG Shinde and DB Rana. CR Panchal was the controller of production of this movie.

The star cast of the film includes Jeetendra, Rakhee, Nazima, Helen, Paintal, Achala Sachdev, Jayant, Sajjan, Randhir, Murad, Sulochana Sr., Nana Palsikar, Radheshyam, Narbada Shankar, Krishan Dhawan, Manmohan, Raj, Darshan, MS Mehta, Fordil, A Kumar, Ram Sindhi, Mona, and Ashok Bhalla.

This movie has five songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri (two songs), Neeraj (two songs) and SH Bihari (one song). Music is composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Suman Kalyanpur and Manna Dey are the playback singers for this movie.

Coming to today’s song, although a lesser heard song, I think it was also played intermittently on radio during those times and later on. This song is sung by Mohd Rafi and lyrics are by Neeraj. An entertaining remembrance which was lying noted since more than seven years now.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song. On screen Jeetendra is performing the song. Also seen in the picturization of the song is Manmohan and Paintal and many others…

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 94 # Kalyanji-Anandji – Year 1975
———————————————–———————————————

Today 30th June 2020 is 92nd birth anniversary of Kalyanjibhai Virjibhai Shah (30 June 1928 – 24 August 2000) of the great music director duo Kalyanji-Anandji.

On this occasion as a tribute to him here is a song from the ‘1975’ movie ‘Rafoo Chakkar’. I vaguely remember to have watched this movie with my parents and brothers in my childhood. I was just around seven years old then (considering the date of release of this movie). However, the songs of this movie have always remained in my memory. I think they were very popular in those years and were frequently heard on loud speakers and radio. Particularly the songs ‘chhuk chhuk chhak chhak Bombay se Baroda tak’, ‘tumko mere dil ne’, ‘kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai’, ‘dil lena buri balaa hai’, ‘ae zamaane tu kar le sitam pe sitam’…

Almost all songs from this movie were good and I have a big nostalgia of the songs of this movie. So, when I became a member of this blog I had shared a couple of songs, and one of them ‘tumko mere dil ne’ was posted on 21.01.2014 (much later according to me, because when I joined the blog I always thought all songs of the seventies must be already there . 🙂

‘Tum ko mere dil ne’ has always been my big favorite and so is ‘kisi pe dil agar’ but then there is one more song from this movie which brings back memories for me and I am going to present this song today.
And since this song was pending since 2013, I thought I should go with it instead of taking another song when I was thinking of a post on this occasion today. All these years this song has been in my dormant memory associated with the name of this movie ‘Rafoo Chakkar’. I have no recollection of having watched this movie again either in theatre or on TV channels. I have only watched a couple of its songs on TV. I may have watched parts of this movie when it was being aired on TV.

“Rafoo Chakkar-1975’ was a presentation from the ‘House of Nadiadwala’. It was produced by I.A. Nadiadwala for ‘M.I. Films Pvt Ltd’. This movie was directed by Narinder Bedi.

Ajay Kumar was the chief assistant director while assistant director was Kapil Kapoor. Raj Bedi was the dialogue director.

Story of this movie was written by Jayant Dharmadhikari, whereas the dialogues were written by Kadar Khan. K.K. Shukla had written the screenplay of this movie.

Editing of this movie was done by Babubhai Thakkar.

It had Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Rajindernath, Faryal, Asrani, Master Chikkoo with Paintal, Madan Puri, Anwar Hussain, Sulochana, Mumtaz Begum, Shetty, Viju Khote, Shamim, Surender Shetty, K.N. Singh, Sudhir, Bhagwan, MacMohan, Man Mohan, Habib, Jankidas, M. Rajan, Tiwari, Mohan Sherry, Hiralal, Rajan Haksar, Goga, Dalpat, Sapru and Kamran.

Lyrics were written by Gulshan Bawra and music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Kanchan, Mahesh Kumar and Aziz Nazan were the playback singers who had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Jaikumar conducted the music while Frank Fernand was the arranger and Babla was the assistant in music of this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 02.01.1975.

In 1975 there were a ‘dozen’ of movies where Kalyanji-Anandji had composed the music for them. Here is the list;

Sno. Title Year Passed by Censor Board Lyricist Represented on the Blog</
1 Anokhaa 1975 02.04.1975 Indeewar, Sawan Kumar N
2 Apne Dushman 1975 19.11.1975 Verma Malik, Qamar Jalalabadi N
3 Bhoolaa Bhatkaa 1975 13.10.1975 Anand Bakshi
4 Chori Mera Kaam 1975 30.04.1975 Verma Malik Yes/Yippeeee’ed
5 Dharmaatmaa 1975 30.04.1975 Indeewar Y
6 Do Thug 1975 05.12.1975 Rajinder Krishan N
7 Faraar 1975 11.11.1975 Rajinder Krishan Y
8 Himaalaya Se Ooncha 1975 15.04.1975 Indeewar Y
9 Monto 1975 15.05.1975 Verma Malik
10 Rafoo Chakkar 1975 02.01.1975 Gulshan Bawra Y
11 Uljhan 1975 31.10.1975 M.G. Hashmat Y
12 Zoro 1975 31.10.1975 Verma Malik

None of the songs of this movie “Rafoo Chakkar-1975” make it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year. And only two compositions of Kalyanji-Anandji featured in that year’s list one from the previous years’ release ‘Haath Ki Safaai-1974’ i.e. ‘waadaa kar le sajnaa’ at number six and another from the movie ‘Dharmaatma-1975’ which was ‘tere chehre mein wo jaadu hai’ at number thirty-one.

The title song of ‘Uljhan-1975’ figured at number eleven in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala-1976’.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song which is sung by Aziz Nazan and Kanchan. On screen Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh are lip syncing the voices of Aziz Nazan and Kanchan whereas we can see Rajindernath, Paintal, Sulochana, Mumtaz Begum and many others in the picturization of this song.
Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Rajindernath and Paintal are performing ‘hippies’ in disguise (not for viewers) to get release of the captivated Sulochana and Mumtaz Begum.

“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you don’t feel pain”.

Thus spoke Bob Marley (1945-1981), the famous Jamaican singer and songwriter, about the power of music. From the most casual to the most formal, every activity, every endeavor of human existence is in one form or another, quite inextricably linked with music. Music pervades our lives and our beings. In many an instance, music appears quite unexpectedly in our lives.

Back in 1981, the Minister of Culture of France was a gentleman by the name Jack Lang. He appointed Maurice Fleuret as the Director of Music and Dance. One observation Maurice had about the cultural ethos of France – “the music everywhere, the concert nowhere”. He conducted a sample survey of the French population. The survey brought out some very interesting results; the most important one was which established that almost half the population was adept at playing one or another type of musical instrument.

Armed with this result, Maurice dreamt of bringing this talent for music, out in the open. Working with his minister, Maurice set out to design a method which would allow common people to be able to perform for others. From this pursuit was born the concept of ‘Fête de la Musique’ or the ‘Festival of Music’. After preparing and communicating for many weeks, finally the date for this public festival was decided as 21st June. In the year 1982, this event was rolled out across the length and breadth of France.

Ever since, the phenomena has spread to practically everywhere. This festival is now held in more than a thousand cities across 170 countries.

One basic feature of this celebration is that it is free. The artists and musicians perform for free. And also, all performances are free for the viewing public.

When writing about music, I have occasionally fallen back on the 1985 film ‘Sur Sangam’, for a suitable song for the post. Once again today, as I write to celebrate this worldwide event, I bring to the readers another wonderful song that tells about the nature and practice of music. The beginning words of this song lay out such an adept definition,

saadh re mann sur ko saadh re
ek mann ko doosre se baandh re

Yes, a force that brings together and binds the minds and hearts of people. Need I say more – the experience of the regulars of this musical bandwagon will speak for itself.

As I noted in my write up for the song “Aaye Sur Ke Panchhi Aaye”, as far as the memory serves, the film ‘Sur Sangam’ is probably the last film that I can remember, that has music as its central theme. After 1985, I cannot recall any other Hindi film built on the theme of music.

The film is a Hindi remake of the iconic Telegu film ‘Shankarabharnam’. It has been produced by V Ramesh for Vijay Madhavi Pictures, Madras and is directed by K Vishwanath. The eminent star cast of this film includes Girish Karnad, Jayaprada, Sachin, Sadhna Singh, Deven Verma, Bharti Achrekar, Paintal, Tabassum, Asrani, Bhushan Tiwari, Dina Pathak, Mohan Choti, OP Singh, Jeet Mohan, Sulabha Deshpande, SP Dubey, Urmila, Master Akash Singh and Baby Mamta.

The film has a set of very wonderful 11 songs, all written by Vasant Dev, and set to wonderful classical melodies by Lakshmikant Pyaarelal. Five songs of this film are already showcased on our blog. And the sixth makes its appearance today on the occasion of the World Day of Music. The singing voice is that of Rajan Sajan Misra.

May there be delightful music today, and every day in our lives.

Today, 21st June is designated as the World Music Day. The reminders checked in quite late in the afternoon today. The historical details about this event are available on the internet, and our dear Arun ji has also summarized them in a brief post on the Whatsapp group.

As I set down thinking about this event, and to search out an appropriate song for today, my mind almost immediately went to the 1985 film ‘Sur Sangam’.  In my mind, this is probably the best film on the theme of classical music, in the recent decades. Times are past that classical music and the legends of this art form used to be the central themes of many a film, especially from the historical perspective, in the decades that coincide with the golden era of Hindi film music. Historical persona such as Tansen and Baiju, Narsi Mehta and Meerabai, Kalidas and Soordas, Kabir and Rani Roopmati have been central themes and central characters of many a film till the decade of 1970s. Beyond that, I cannot easily recall a film whose theme and storyline is based primarily on classical music.
