Nainon ke teer chala gayi

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
This is the 10th and the last song of the series- SONGS BY NON SINGERS.
For me it has been a very hectic fortnight involving a very busy schedule. Luckily, I was able to locate all the songs’ video and Audio on You Tube but not without the customary hiccups.
Collecting authentic information about old, fogotten artists was also very challenging. To get atleast 10 songs, I dug out about 30 songs from films of 30s to 70s.
To my dismay, I found only 9 songs on the You Tube. Then one of my friends from Sri Lanka helped me by uploading today’s song, which is extremely rare. I knew that he had this song and on my request he uploaded it.
There was a very good response for this series. Many of my friends from various groups for old films and music on Facebook, flooded my message box with their comments.
There were many comments and appreciation remarks on this blog also. I thank all these people for their encouragement and appreciation remarks.
I must also thank ATUL JI for his kindness, as usual, for patiently writing all the Lyrics for me, for all the songs which I used to send in advance to him. Without his help, encouragement and support, this series would not have come through so well and satisfying.
Today, we are going to listen to an old song, almost 70 year old. It is from a film SHUKRIYA-1944. This is a rare and valuable song because it is a BANNED song.
It was banned as soon as the film was released. I do not know why. I have not seen the film nor any information about its story is available anywhere and I very much doubt if any print is available anywhere in India. The major sellers of such films online are not having this film. This song is available here only because it was available with a fan in Sri Lanka.
The writer of the song and the MD was G.A.CHISTI.
GHULAM AHMED CHISTI was born in a village called Ganachor, in Jullundhar district of Punjab. From childhood he started singing Naats in school and stage shows. He came to Lahore and met Agha Hashra Kashmiri, the famous drama, novel and Lyrics writer. He was about to start a film. He employed Chishti on Rs.50 pm salary. Chishti learned about music here. After Kashmiri’s death in 1935, Chishti joined a recording company and composed music for soms NFS of Jaddanbai and Amirbai.
He started as MD for Deeno Duniya-36 and Sohni Mahiwal-38, both Punjabi films. His first Hindi film was ‘Paap ki nagari’-1939. He went to Calcutta, did few films, then came to Bombay and did some films. In all he gave music to 13 Hindi and 4 Punjabi films in India. Then he migrated to Pakistan in 1949. In Pakistan he became a strong pillar for the developing film industry there. He gave music to 157 films in Pakistan. He was known as ‘The fastest composer’. He could write, compose and record 5 to 6 songs in one day !
He gave Noorjehan her first break in a stage show when she was just 9 year old. Khayyam and Rehman Verma were his assistants. In 1986, when Khayyam went to Ppakistan, Noorjehan sang 5 of his Gazals from indian films and the music was arranged/conducted by Chishti for his ex-assistant.
In his last few years,Chisty renounced everything and became a Fakir. He was called BABAJEE. He died in Lahore on 25-12-1994.
This song is a solo song, sung by comedian SUNDER, who sang it as a drunken man, with hiccups in between the song.
SUNDER SINGH was born in Sialkot(now in Pakistan)and started his cine career as a leading man, but slowly he was relegated to only comic roles. Not much information is available on Sunder either in any book or on any Internet site. It is a pity !
Sunder’s filmography runs into 250-300 films. He did variety of roles ranging from beggar to Seth ji and from pujari to a theatre owner. Sunder has sung fwe songs, mostly uttering few words in a duet. This is the only solo full song sung by him alone, according to one source. This is a very good song and it is surprising why it was banned in India by the British Censors.
Enjoy this banned song, available in India, perhaps for the FIRST TIME !
Song-Nainon ke teer chala gayi (Shukriya)(1944) Singer-Sundar, Lyrics-Ghulam Ahmed Chishti, MD-Ghulam Ahmed Chishti
Lyrics
nainon ke teer chala gayi
ho
nainon ke teer chala gayi
ek sheher ki laundiya
sheher ki laundiya
sheher ki laundiya
sheher ki laundiya
dil pe nishaana laga gayi
ho
dil pe nishaana laga gayi
ek sheher ki laundiya
sheher ki laundiya
nainon ke teer chala gayi
resham ki saadi thhi
chehra gulaab thha
resham ki saadi thhi
chehra gulaab thha
haay meri maiyya
haay meri maiyya
haay meri maiyya
ghazab ka shabaab thha
haay meri maiyya
ghazab ka shabaab thha
ishq ka rog laga gayi
ho
ishq ka rog laga gayi
ek sheher ki laundiya
sheher ki laundiya
nainon ke teer chala gayi
gora gora rang
gora gora rang
gora gora rang
aur thhod thhoda laal thha aa
ashiqon ke faansne ko
zulfon ka jaal thha
ashiqon ke faansne ko
zulfon ka jaal thha
karke ishaara bula gayi
ho
karke ishaara bula gayi
ek sheher ki laundiya
sheher ki laundiya
nainon ke teer chala gayi
pairon taley uske aankhen bichaaunga
pairon taley uske aankhen bichaaunga
sau baar roothe to ek baar
nahin nahin nahin nahin
nahin nahin
nahin
ek baar roothe to sau baar manaaungaa
ek baar roothe to sau baar manaaungaa
gar wo mere haath aa gayi
ho
gar wo mere haath aa gayi
ek sheher ki laundiya
sheher ki laundiya
nainon ke teer
haan
nainon ke teer
haan
nainon ke teer
chala gayi
ho o o

Arun ji,
I am running out of hats and caps that I must doff, for the amount of effort are putting in, and this treasure of information that you are sharing with us. This series has been a truly remarkable series.
Regarding the list of songs you have sent, I do have maybe two songs from that. I will pull them out and send to you shortly.
This effort has been really great, pulling together so many non singers, and specially the ones that are more obscure.
Thanks again for this yeoman’s service you are doing for enriching this blog, and our listening pleasure.

The above song has been available on YT for past 2.5 years and seems to be uploaded by someone from Pakistan (Posting date: Feb 24, 2010). So, not sure if there is some sort of mix-up in the write-up.
Not sure if this is the same Sunder who sung many solos during 40s-50s in movies like Khamoshi, Arabian Nights, Shaadi Ke Baad, etc or not.

Arunji, I remember Sunder singing one song with Shamshad Begum in Chandni Chowk. Which are his other songs. I will feel obliged with this info.

Arunji,
Aap hamare liye jitni mehnat karte ho, uska dhanyawaad karne ke liye koi bhi shabd kam padta hai. We are so fortunate to have you with us. The info you dig out with so much time, pain must be rewarding when you get comments of thanks from your fans. What you have done and are doing, is out of anybody’s imagination/capacity. I would never would have thought that Sundar, Paintal, I S Johar, Asrani, Budho Advani, Anwar Hussain, Johnny Whisky, Mirza Musharraf, Om Prakash have sung in films. To find a song of singers is easy for us, but to find a rare song of these actors is like a finding needle in the haystack. As I have said, words like Thank You looks like “dwarf” in front of your “monumental” work. Aasha rakhti hoon aap meri bhawnaon ko samajh rahe honge.
