The film ‘Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain’ from 1965 is simply a treasure house of wonderful songs. And so it is, given that the lyrics are coming from the pen of Majrooh Sb and the music is created by Khayyaam Sb, the genius of the understated melody who has remained always by the banks of the mainstream. Whatever may be the film, his creations are simply fantastic.
The film is a Shashi Kapoor, Nanda starrer, one of the most endearing pair who came together in many films during the sixties. Produced and directed by Akhtar Mirza, it was release under his own banner of Akhtar Mirza Productions. The other star cast includes Leela Chitnis, Madan Puri, Tabassum, Anwar Hussain, Kumud Tripathi, David, Helen, Chaand Barq, Ramesh Deo, Laxmichhaaya, Munshi Munakka, MA Latif, Rashid Khan, Tuntun, Bhalla, Ratan Gaurang, Wajid Khan, Rani etc. The film is a tragic love story of two simple people, punctuated with misunderstandings, unfortunate destiny and social mishappenings.
Five songs from this film are already represented on this blog, including the quintessential song of pensive mood in the voice of Suman Kalyanpur, “Jo Hum Pe Guzarti Hai”. Here is the sixth song, presented in mujra style by Helen. Onscreen, one can see Helen, Shashi Kapoor and Anwar Hussain. Appears that there is some sort of a wager between Helen and Anwar Hussain, wherein Helen claims that she can please a very dejected looking Shashi Kapoor with her charms and sensuality. But as it turns out at the end of the song, she is not successful.
