Aji tum kitne haseen ho

Posted on: January 2, 2013

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The film ‘Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain’ from 1965 is simply a treasure house of wonderful songs. And so it is, given that the lyrics are coming from the pen of Majrooh Sb and the music is created by Khayyaam Sb, the genius of the understated melody who has remained always by the banks of the mainstream. Whatever may be the film, his creations are simply fantastic.

The film is a Shashi Kapoor, Nanda starrer, one of the most endearing pair who came together in many films during the sixties. Produced and directed by Akhtar Mirza, it was release under his own banner of Akhtar Mirza Productions. The other star cast includes Leela Chitnis, Madan Puri, Tabassum, Anwar Hussain, Kumud Tripathi, David, Helen, Chaand Barq, Ramesh Deo, Laxmichhaaya, Munshi Munakka, MA Latif, Rashid Khan, Tuntun, Bhalla, Ratan Gaurang, Wajid Khan, Rani etc. The film is a tragic love story of two simple people, punctuated with misunderstandings, unfortunate destiny and social mishappenings.

Five songs from this film are already represented on this blog, including the quintessential song of pensive mood in the voice of Suman Kalyanpur, “Jo Hum Pe Guzarti Hai”. Here is the sixth song, presented in mujra style by Helen. Onscreen, one can see Helen, Shashi Kapoor and Anwar Hussain. Appears that there is some sort of a wager between Helen and Anwar Hussain, wherein Helen claims that she can please a very dejected looking Shashi Kapoor with her charms and sensuality. But as it turns out at the end of the song, she is not successful.

(NOTE: now only one more song from this film remains, and that is also a mujra dance song. Coming up soon. 🙂 ).

So here is this softly sung song of enticement and allurement, in the voice of Asha Bhosle. Enjoy.

aji tum kitne haseen ho, ye mere dil se to poochho
ye nazar hai kitni hai qaatil, kisi bismil se to poochho

Ah the extent of your beauty and grace
Ask me, ask my heart about it
And the intensity of this glance of yours
Ask the wounds (in my heart)

(NOTE: bismil = wound, injury)

kahin jo saath hotey, husn tera aur shabaab apna
zamaana dhoondta rehta, nahin milta phir jawaab apna

Had is been so
That your good looks and my splendor
Were paired together
We would have been beyond
Any comparison this world could imagine

nahin to kis liye pyaare ye nigaahen jo utthi hain
mere chehre se machal kar tere chehre pe ruki hain
aji tum kaun ho kya ho zaraa mehfil se to poochho

And that is so
My glances, difficult to hold down
Want to just look at your face
What you are, who you are
Oh just ask anyone in this gathering

adaa ki bijliyan tooti utthaa ye kaun mehfil se
jigar mein aag si bhadki dhuaan utthne lagaa dil se

As you got up to go
A thousand bolts of lightning
Crashed as you moved
A fire broke out within
The heart starts to smolder

koi kehta hai thehar jaa arre qaati arre qaatil
kisi lab par ye sadaa hai mera dil haaye mera dil
utthi hai kaisi qayaamat zaraa mehfil se to poochho

(Of the ones present in the gathering)
One calls out, asking you to stay
Another calls out for the stolen heart
It is like the end of the world
(as you get up to leave)
Oh just ask anyone in this gathering
