Oonche sur mein gaaye jaa

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

For the Generations that became young in 50s, 60s or the 70s, Dev Anand was their Idol. The theatres showing his films used to be crowded with youngsters who tried to copy his style, mannerisms, Hair style etc.

Over a period this generation became middle aged and their tastes changed-NOT the Idol, however-but for Dev Anand nothing changed. He was the same stylish, positive, romantic and active actor throughout. He strongly believed that the age depends on the state of mind and he remained young at heart all his life.

When he was at Prabhat Film company in 1946, one of its Directors, Baburao Pai,took a look at him from head to toe and announced,” This boy is something special, different. I like his smile, style and attitude. One day he will rule the Industry.” And RULE he did for many years !

Dev was one of those rare actors who did not have to struggle much and in the First film itself he was the Hero. In his debut film ‘Hum Ek Hain’-1946, three more people also debuted. Rehana and Rehman as actor and P.L.Santoshi as a Director. However, this film, based on a Hindu-Muslim theme, did not do much for any of the debutants.

Dev’s real break came with ZIDDI-1948, thanks to Ashok Kumar who saw him with his expert eyes and recommended him to get the Hero’s role opposite Kamini Kaushal. This film was a major milestone, because Kishore Kumar sang for him first time. This companionship lasted for many many years.

In 1949, when Dev and elder brother Chetan, who was already an established name in films, decided to establish their own Production Company-NAVKETAN (which literaly means New Flag), they also decided to take S D Burman as their Music Director in future. Since then the pair remained constant till Burmanda himself advocated Jaidev or R D Burman.

Though Kishore Kumar did not sing a sing in the first film of Navketan, Kishor kumar did not sing a song, he had a song in next venture viz. Baazi. Dev and Kishore gave us wonderful songs from 50s through 70s.

Navketan produced 35 films till 2011. They have their own site Navketan.com. In this site, Navketan claims to have “discovered” about 43 artists from the begining( actors, actresses, Directors etc).

I do not know how they determined this or what their definition of Discovery is, but some of the names in this Discovery lists are- Kishore Kumar, Guru Dutt, Johnny Walker, Sahir Ludhiyanvi, Mohan Saigal, Raj Khosla, Shatrughna Sinha etc. Some of these artists had been in films before they did work in Navketan. It would have been interesting to know these people’s opinion about their inclusion in Discovery list of Navketan.

In 1994, Taxi driver became a hit film. Navketan decided to make yet another film with many of the artists of Taxi driver, like Dev, Kalpana Kartik, Bhagwan Sinha, S D Burman etc. Chetan Anand was Taxi Driver’s Dirctor and one Mandi Kumar Burman was his assistant. In House No. 44 , M K Burman was given a chance to direct the film. With a very poor story line with big pot holes in it, poor Burman could not do much and he was reverted as assistant to Chetan Anand in the subsequent films of Navketan Films.

The saving grace of House Number 44 was its wonderful music. Songs by Hemant Kumar in this film are real gems. The film actually has one of my favourites, “Teri duniya mein jeene se to behetar hai ki mar jaayen”, within 5 minutes of film’s opening.

In this film Kishore Kumar has just one solo song.

The storyline of HOUSE No. 44 -1955 is…

Ashok (Dev) is a pickpocket and small time thief. His abode, along with his sidekick, Jamoora,is footpath.

On one rainy day, they take shelter in the verandah of a a nearby house. Next morning the owner’s daughter Nimmo (Kalpana Kartik) fires and drives them away. While going away, Ashok picks pocket of a passerby.

The man is no one else, but Sunder (Bhagwan Sinha), a crook of repute himself. Sunder realises that his pocket has been picked by Ashok. He comes back and confronts him, telling him not to waste his time in such paltry activities and that he must do bigger things. Sunder takes Ashok to his boss, Captain (K N Singh) in his den at House No. 44. The boss employs Ashok in his staff.

One day Ashok and Jamura watch Sunder and his Gang loot the Railway Wagon and in that process, Sunder kills the Chowkidar-Shivraj (Shivraj-a funny thing about this actor was that in most of the films he did, his filmi name used to be Shivraj only). Shivraj is Nimmo’s father.

Sunder now takes the responsibility if Nimmo, with an eye on her, and makes her a courier for the gang. Once in the Gang, Nimmo and Ashok meet again and fall in love. After few songs,t hey decide to quit this illegal life and live straight.

Their Boss , Captain does not like this and ensures that Ashok does not get any job. Frustrated, tempted by the reward of 500 Rupees ,Ashok informs the police about Shivraj’s murderer Sunder. The Police chase Sunder and he is killed by them in encounter.

The Boss, Captain suspects Ashok for the squealing and calls him to House No.44 for a judgement meeting, where he is to be killed. Ashok escapes and the goons follow him. After a lot of chase and a final fight, Captain catches him and is about to kill Ashok, when the Police drops in and arrest Captain.

Ashok and Nimmo are free and happy birds now.

let us hear the Kishore Kumar solo song- Oonche sur mein gaaye jaa.

The Lyricist is Sahir Ludhiyanvi and the Music Director is S D Burman.

Arun ji,

Great reminder. This is one of those songs that I categorize as Dev Anand solo fun songs, which appear in almost every Navketan film in the 1950s, and also in some non-Navketan films.
“Dil Ye Kya Cheez Hai” (Baazi),
“Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke” (Nau Do Gyarah),
“Ae Meri Topi Palat Ke Aa” (Funtoosh),
“Chaahe Koi Khush Ho. . .” (Taxi Driver),
“Teri Dhoom Har Kahin” (Kala Bazaar),
“Tak Dhum Tak Dhum Baaje, Duniya Tera Dhol Re” (Bambai Ka Babu),
“Hai Apna Dil To Awaara” (Solvan Saal)
“Akelaa Hoon Main” (Baat Ek Raat Ki)
“She Ne Khela He Se Aaj Cricket Match” (Love Marriage)
“Chheda Mere Dil Ne Tarana Tere Pyar Ka” (Asli Naqli)
. . .
and more I am sure.
