Baaje waala Patiyaale waala

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

There is something special about Johnny Walker lip synching Rafi. One is that Rafi Sb of course sings with the true sound of fun and jest, as required by the situation. Along with that, Johnny Walker’s antics, the twitch of his smile and the twinkle in his eyes are more than enough to convince you that he too is thoroughly enjoying himself as he is performing. Take any song of these two together and one can feel the heightened quantum of fun and entertainment.

‘Basant’ (1960) is a veritable treasure of wonderful songs. The film has a total of 14 songs tuned to the melodies of OP Nayyar. Released under the banner of Mitra Productions, this film is produced and directed by Bibhuti Mitra. The lyrics writing effort for these fourteen songs is shared between three poets – Qamar Jalaalabaadi, SH Behari and Shewan Rizvi. With one song written by SH Behari and two songs by Shewan Rizvi, the rest of the songs
are penned by Qamar Jalaalabaadi. The use of singing voices is also very interesting. With the exception of one song in which the voice of SD Batish
appears (alongside that of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle), all songs have been sung by Rafi Sb and Asha ji. There are eight Rafi-Asha duets. Of the remaining four, three are Asha solo songs, and one is a Rafi-Asha-SD Batish song. No solo songs by Rafi in this list of 14 songs, yes, interesting, isn’t it.

The star cast of the film is impressive, and includes Nutan, Shammi Kapoor, Johnny Walker, Minoo Mumtaz, Prab, Kammo, Murad, Vitthaldas Panchotia, Jagdish Kanwal, Shyamlal, Rajendra, V Namade, with Cuckoo making a guest appearance. The storyline of this film is quiet a standard crime-punishment-romance fare, which the director has turned into a musical.

Meenakshi (Nutan) is from a rich family. Her father arranges a match for her with Rajesh (Pran). Not liking the decision being made for her, Meenakshi runs away from home. A small time thief, Billu (Johnny Walker) way-lays her and decamps with her bag. Then she meets Ashim (Shammi Kapoor); and they begin to fall in love. All this while, Billu is keeping track of them. Then the story line goes through the standard twists and turns, Ashim is accused of a major theft, and posters are out for his arrest. Misunderstandings follow, and Meenakshi reluctantly agrees for the marriage with Rajesh. The wedding is almost on hand when Billu intervenes, appearing at the head of the ceremonial band that simply turns up at Meenakshi’s home, and delivers her a letter from Ashim. This particular song is the bandmaster occasion where Johnny Walker delivers a message to Nutan.

The wording of the song is very interesting, as it contains the names of some well known actors, singers and music directors. The lyrics are built around those names. There are some songs constructed like that. What makes the lyrics of this song really stand out is that the names of Asha Bhonsle and Rafi are mentioned in it, and so is the name of the music director OP Nayyar, and to top it, the name of Johnny Walker himself is in the song. Only the name of the lyrics writer is missing, else the team would have been complete. 🙂 As far as I can recall, that could be one rare combination of lyrics. I would request other contributors and readers to suggest if they can recall any more such songs with similar features.

On screen, the song is performed by Johnny Walker who enters beating a large drum, followed by a band made up of all ladies, headed by Kammo. Also visible in this clip are Nutan and Pran, and the setting appears to be a simple wedding ceremony, in the presence of one priest and another person, most likely a henchman of Pran. Of course, the star of the scene is Johnny Walker, as he so comically performs this catchy number on the screen.
Enjoy.

Thanks Sudhirji,
The echo effect lend the song a beautiful effect. In Love Marriage tin kanaster… song there was mention of Saigal. I had sent one song to Atulji which had Nargis etc figuring in it. I will have to search and resend.

‘Basant’ had almost similar story of 2 another films which were released later! Those two films were Rajashri’s ‘Ek Baar Kaho’ (* Shabana & Navin Nischol) and Indrakumar’s ‘Mann’ (* Aamir Khan & Maneesha Koirala).

Sudhir ji,
Thanks for a very interesting song.
Film ‘Pehli Tarikh’-1954,had featured a song by Kishore kumar ” Khush hai zamana aaj Pehli Tarikh hai”. It had become an iconic song and was played by Radio Ceylon on every 1st of the month. This song had featured few names of film stars, including kishore kumar’s own name also.
There were few more songs also like this, but the No 1 song in this category happens to be a song in which as many as 32 film stars and composers were wovwn in the Lyrics. The song was from as early period as 1939.
Here is some information and the song lyric itself,as noted by Shri.Surjit
Singh ji-

Majority of the popular and well-established stars (32 in
all) were mentioned in the following song from the almost-end-
of-the-decade movie “Gharib Ka Lal (1939)” . The lyricists of the
movie were Rafi Kashmiri and Munshi Qabil, the MD was Sagiir
Aasif. The entire song is

“tujhe bibbo kahu.N ki sulochanaa,
umaashashii kahu.N yaa ki jamunaa
tujhe motii kahu.N ki biliimoriyaa,
tujhe saigal kahu.N yaa ki baravaa
tujhe kajjan kahu.N yaa ki shaantaa,
ratanabaii kahu.N mahataab kah duu.N yaa ki maadhurii
merii bimalaa merii kaanan merii jaddan merii rozii,
tujhe gauhar kahu.N ki sabitaa
devikaaraanii kahu.N ki lalitaa,
durgaa khoTe kahu.N ki zubedaa
tujhe ghorii kahu.N diikshit kahu.N
yaa tujhe chaarlii kah duu.N
kahu.N mirzaa musharraf
yaa tujhe mai.n kaabulii kah duu.N
tujhe surendra kahu.N yaa ki vaastii,
mai.n kumaar kahu.N yaa ki Gazanavii”

This song was not posted until now? I just love it!!!

Basant had some lovely songs, though I felt the movie lost its way somewhat in the second half. But then when I watched it, I did so for Shammi Kapoor and Nutan. And then there’s Minoo Mumtaz too in the movie, not to mention Johnny Walker. They more than made up for the story going apart in the second half. 🙂
