Jaa re jaa o harjaayee dekhi teri dildaari

Posted on: January 24, 2013

In Hindi movies, we have examples of movie makers who would ensure that their movie titles began with some particular letters of the alphabet. Thus J Omprakash’s movies will always begin with “A”, and in case of Arjun Hingorani movies, the title would be of three words, each beginning with K. Then there were movie makers who regarded certain words as lucky for them. For instance Sawan Kumar fancied the word “Sautan” in his movies while producer Girsh Jain regarded the word “Khiladi” as his lucky word in his movie titles.

But I find the superstition of Subhash Ghai the most interesting. His first movie as a director was called “Kallicharan” (1975) which was a hit. His subsequent movie was called “Vishwanath” (1978) and it was a bigger hit. Those who were into following cricket those days would know that Kallicharan was a famous West Indian batsman of those days whereas Vishwanath was a famous Indian batsman of those days. Subhash Ghai’s next movie was called “Gautam Govinda” (1979) and there are peole who tell me that this title was inspired from the name of an Indian hockey player of those days called Govinda.

Subhash Ghai’s next movie was called “Karz” (1980) and to the best of my knowledge there is no sportsperson by this name. 🙂 Subhash Ghai then decided to adopt adjectives like “Krodhi” (1981) or nouns like “Vidhaata” (1982), “Hero” (1984) etc as titles of his movies. Personally I think it would have been interesting if he had continued to use cricketers names as titles of his movies. He had so many impressive names to chose from.

Whe I check up on his subsequent movies, I find that he did make one movie called “Yuvraaj”(2008). Let us hope that he will soon make movies on cricketers. Some suggested names being Pathan, Ganguly, Dhoni, Ajit Agarkar, Sami etc. 🙂

Why all this discussion of Subhash Ghai today ! It is because today (24 january 2013) is the 68th birth anniversary of Subhash Ghai (24 january 1945). On this occasion, here is a song from “Kallicharan” (1975), which launched the career of Subhash Ghai with a bang. This movie also launched Shatrughan Sinha as a hero and established his pairing with Reena Roy as a saleable pair.

This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Reena Roy, with Sheila Ramachandra, Shathrughan Sinha, Premnath, Alka, Shirley etc also visible. Inderjit Singh Tulsi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

This song was arguably the most popular song of this movie during its time.

Song-Jaa re jaa o harjaayee dekhi teri dildaari (Kallicharan)(1976) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Inderjeet Singh Tulsi, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

ho o
o o o

jaa re jaa
jaa re jaa o harjaayee
dekhi teri dildaari
dil dekar main kar baithee
dil ke dushman se yaari
tujhko aankhon mein bharke
tujhko aankhon mein bharke
mar gayi main tujhpe marke
patthar ki poojaa karke
haaree main haaree
jaa re jaa
jaa re jaa o harjaayee
dekhi teri dildaari
dil dekar main kar baithee
dil ke dushman se yaari

o o o
tere peechche aankhein meenche
chal dee main deewaani
haaye
chhodke duniyaa saari
ho o o
logon ne kitna samjhaayaa
maine ek na maani
meri mati gayee thi maari
yoon na koyee mare
yoon na koyee mare
rabbaa khaair kare
ho o
hansi hansi mein phans gayee
main to bechaari
jaa re jaa
jaare jaa o harjaayee
dekhi teri dildaari
dil dekar main kar baithee
dil ke dushman se yaari

ho o o o
bin soche bin jaane maine
oh re o begaane
tujhe saunp diyaa jeevan ko
o o o
jaise khushboo nazar na aaye
rang chhuaa na jaaye
waaise jaan saki naa tere mann ko
phir bhi chaahaa tujhe
phir bhi chaahaa tujhe
tu na samjhaa mujhe
ho o
bann ke paheli reh gayee
preet hamaari
jaa re jaa
jaa re jaa o harjaayee
dekhi teri dildaari
dil dekar main kar baithee
dil ke dushman se yaari
tujhko aankhon mein bharke
tujhko aankhon mein bharke
mar gayi main tujhpe marke
patthar ki poojaa karke
haaree main haaree
jaa re jaa
jaa re jaa o harjaayee
dekhi teri dildaari
dil dekar main kar baithee
dil ke dushman se yaari

होsss
ओ ओ ओ

Subhash Ghai produced and directed in 2008 a very good movie “Black and White” regarding relationship between Hindu Urdu Professor and a sucide bomber , It was a very good movie starring Anil Kapoor, Anurag Sinha,Sheffali ,Habib Tanvir. Gone unnoticed largely. That`s so sad.

Also he produced in 2003, a good movie:Joggers Park starring Victor Bannerjee,Perizad Zorabian.

Atul ji, nice article covering the ‘alphabetic superstition’ (i will call it part-1, since there are many other viz. Producer Mohan Kumar whose films start with alphabet A).
Prakash ji- thanks for this first from the film Kaalicharan!
