Sainyya chhod bhi kalaayi ab haath se

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Remembering Anand Bakshi on the anniversary of his passing away.

Anand ji, a most prolific songwriter that this industry has seen. His claim to fame is having penned more than 3,500 songs for nearly 640 films. A writing career that lasted for more than four decades, and his creations continued to appear in films as late as last year (2012), ten years after his passing away from this world. In his lifetime, he was nominated for no less than 40 times for the Filmfare awards, which sounds like almost one nomination every year of his active career from 1957 to 2002. That in itself may be a record that no one may be close to in the industry. He won this award four times.

His first career was with armed forces, having worked in the Indian Navy, and later in the Corps of Signals and Engineering and Mechanical Corps (EME) of the Indian Army. While working in the army, he started to write. His initial publications in ‘Sainik Samachar’ and other magazines boosted his spirits so much, that he decided to quit the army and came to Bombay in the mid 1950s, to build a career in films. The early years were a struggle, and it took him almost a decade before being recognized amongst the leading lyricists in the industry. Bhagwan Dada, the famous actor and comedian, gave him his first break in 1956. As Anand Bakshi himself describes in an interview with Ameen Sayaani, he was in Bombay for many months without any success, and was already contemplating giving up and returning to his home in Delhi.

But then providence made available an opportunity that was quite unexpected. He was in the office of Bhagwan Dada, who was somewhat worried and upset. Someone prompted him to go and meet Dada. He went into his room. Dada asked what are you here for. Anand ji replied that he is a poet and writes songs. As it turned out, Bhagwan Dada was waiting for another lyricist who had promised to bring some new songs, but did not turn up. To Anand ji’s surprise, Bhagwan Dada asked him to sit down and write songs immediately.

Although taken aback with this imminent task offered to him, he sat down at Bhagwan Dada’s table and before the end of the day, he had written four songs. Bhagwan Dada was very pleased, and all the four songs made it into the next film that Bhagwan Dada was working in. The recordings for these four songs was completed in November 1956, but due to other delays, the film could be released only in 1958.

The film is ‘Bhalaa Aadmi’, produced under the banner of Unity Films, Bombay and is directed by Brij Mohan. The film has 10 songs, four of which are the product of one day’s writing effort by Anand Bakshi, and the remaining six sings are shared between Saba Afghani and Ehsaan Rizvi. The music for this film is composed by Nissar Bazmi. The main cast of actors is impressive and includes Chandrashekhar, Anita Guha, Bhagwan, Kum Kum, Ulhas, Protima Devi, Kumar and Shyam Kumar etc.

For the reasons of this delay, Anand ji’s second film got released earlier. In 1957 came the film ‘Silver King’ that had one song penned by him. But in terms of recording precedence, the songs of ‘Bhala Aadmi’ take the credit as the first songs that Anand ji wrote for Hindi films.

The song presented here is a light and fast paced duet, sung by Sudha Malhotra and Bhushan. As I checked for details of this song, the name Bhushan did not appear to be familiar. I would request other knowledgeable readers to please add more information if possible.

So listen to this lilting duet, one of the very first songs created by Anand Bakshi for his first film ‘Bhalaa Aadmi’. Enjoy.

Song-Sainyya chhodo bhi kalaayi ab haath se (Bhala Aadmi)(1958) Singers-Sudha Malhotra, Bhushan, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Nisaar Bazmi

Lyrics

sainyyaan chhodo bhi kalaai ab haath se
haaye moraa jiyaa ghabraaye aisi baat se
sainyyaan chhodo bhi kalaai ab haath se
haaye moraa jiyaa ghabraaye aisi baat se

pehle to nazren bhi tumne milaa’een thhin
ji tumne milaa’een thhin
dil bhi churaaya badi baaten bhi banaai thhin
ji baaten bhi banaai thhin
kyun darti ho mulaqaat se

haaye
sainyyaan chhodo bhi kalaai ab haath se
haaye moraa jiyaa ghabraaye aisi baat se
sainyyaan chhodo bhi kalaai ab haath se
haaye moraa jiyaa ghabraaye aisi baat se

bholi surat teri dil mein samaai thhi
ji dil mein samaai thhi
tujh se nigaahen main milaa ke pachhtaayi thhi
milaa ke pachhtaayi thhi
bach ke rahoongi tere haath se
haaye
sainyyaan chhodo bhi kalaai ab haath se
haaye moraa jiyaa ghabraaye aisi baat se
sainyyaan chhodo bhi kalaai ab haath se
haaye moraa jiyaa ghabraaye aisi baat se

bhool hui thi ab kabhi na sataayenge
ji kabhi na sataayenge

khaa ke qasam kaho hum maan jaayenge
ji hum maan jaayenge
ab na chhudaao haath haath se
haaye
sainyyaan chhodo bhi kalaai ab haath se
haaye moraa jiyaa ghabraaye aisi baat se
sainyyaan chhodo bhi kalaai ab haath se
haaye moraa jiyaa ghabraaye aisi baat se

I have come across the name Bhushan as the co-singer with Geeta Dutt of “Ye Raaat Bheegi-Bheegi” from Chori-Chori (1956) which was sung originally in its well-known version by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar. The Bhushan-Geeta Dutt version is on YouTube at http://youtu.be/no6E2k_RAMo.

Sudhir ji and Shekhar ji,

The singer BHUSHAN was a Music Director himself, though he sang songs for other composers too.
I have done a full post on BHUSHAN,in my series of ‘ Less known/Unknown composers ‘.

He himself was a wannabe singer and has sung few songs. He had to graduate from B & C grade movies to A grade. He wrote some great lyrics along with some chaluchila songs as per the situations maybe.
