Pardesi babu aate jaate rehna

Posted on: April 17, 2013

The world of Hindi movie music is like a vast ocean containing treasures within it. Popular and well known songs are like treasures that are known to everyone. Then there are lesser known treasures that one can come across easily enough in ankle deep shallow portion of the ocean. But there are treasures that are lying hidden far out and deep into this ocean and the only way one can discover them is by going into great depth and diving repeatedly and patiently to come up with goodies.

Once you bring up these tresaures, we are often not sure of their details. The diggers often identify them incorrectly and everyone start believing in such incorrect details and these misleading details begin to get passed on among music lovers.

It takes one kind of skill and aptitude to dig up forgotten gems and then another kind of skill and aptitude to find out the correct details of the gems thus dug up. When the real facts about these gems become known then we are able to appreciate these gems more knowledgeably and the persons involved behind creating these gems can get their proper due.

Our contributors send me lots and lots of lyrics and my hands are always full of them. I make it a point to listen to the songs myself and check the lyrics myself, with earphones on. Often minor and sometimes major corrections are detected in the lyrics. Then I check the details of the song. Details are likely to be correct in case of well known and even lesser known songs. But sometimes more research is required on the details accompanying the lyrics.

Today, I was going through this lyrics from “Darshan” (1941). Prima facie, it looked like a lyrics with straightforward details. Details said it was a song sung by G M Durrani, with lyrics by Pt Indra Chandra and music by Naushad.

When I began to listen to the song, I immediately knew that the details needed to be investigated further. The voice did not sound like G M Durrani. Moreover, a little later, I could listen to a female voice too in the song.

I found out that the uploader of this song on YT had mentioned G M Durrani as the singer/ On checking up with several other sites, I found that these other sites, as is their wont had faithfully copied and pasted the same information, without caring to cross check the facts.

I tried to dig deeper and I find that one source mentioned the name of singers as Prem Adib and Jyoti. That appeared better.

Then I decided to check in the blog itself. And lo and behold, I find that the blog had the information that I was searching for. A few months ago, our own beloved inhouse encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh had discussed a song from “Darshan” (1941) under his series of “Songs sung by non singers”. There he had discussed a song from “Darshan” (1941) which was sung by Bhudo Advani, Prem Adib and Jyoti. So Prem Adib and Jyoti had sung in this movie ! And the voices in that song seemed to match with the song that I was investigating. So finally I got the facts that I was looking for. This song is sung by Prem Adib, Jyoti and chorus, and not by G M Durrani as erroneously mentioned in YT and elsewhere. Moreover, one can also deduce that the song was picturised on Prem Adib and Jyoti themselves.

So, based on all this digging up which took me the whole of forenoon today, here is this rare and delightful song with full and correct details. This song is sung by Prem Adib and Jyoti. Pt Indra Chandra is the lyricist and music is composed by Naushad.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah, who dived deep into the musical ocean to come up with this gem.

All this collective team work to discover this rare gem, get its details and finally discuss it in the blog has obviously taken efforts. Now one can appreciate why I was not amused yesterday when such efforts on our part to discover rare gems was getting used by someone in a facebook group without crediting us.

Geet Kosh also must contain same info.

Seems there are 2 versions of the song. One version lists Durrani as the singer, while no singers listed for other version.

So i dont really blame YT uploader. People tend to take up GeetKosh as sort of a holy book.

So it appears that the second version of the song got confused with the first version. The people discussing these songs should be able to check up the singer themselves instead of believing what they read since most well known singers have distinct voices.

Kinda yes and no. Hard to say sometimes. For example, many songs of geet kosh only list one singer, and the second -mostly female- singer gets considered as the chorus. And in this situation of a kinda rare song, one would assume that the version with a more famous singer like Durrani would be available first on YT and not the second version. So i would just give benefit of doubt to poor souls 🙂 Hats off to ur hard work though since u have managed to earth out new info which is not even in the geet kosh and this would surely benefit everyone. Hey, may be u can create a new tag for this –addition/enhancement/correction to geet kosh (if u dont have it already) 🙂 That would be very useful reference.

As per the Geet kosh information, there are 2 versions.
1. It is sung by G M Durani and chorus and
2. It is sung by Prem Adib,Jyoti and G M Durani (this additional information is provided in the ADDENDA part I on page 624 of II Vol.)
HFGK does give the right and additional info-always !

Arunji,

Do u mean to say Durrani is the singer in both versions? But Atulji seems to say he cant find Durrani’s voice here.

Regards.

bluefire ji,
I hope you will read my comment also.

I think Durani might have sung only a line or two,in this song.

I did read ur comment Arunji. And hence im asking it again just to make sure there are no typos in what i read in ur comment. Atulji seems to suggest very strongly that there is no Durrani here in this version.

Atulji,
Nice to know that you are concentrating on the lyrics of Pt Indra. I am planning to post about 70 songs penned by Panditji in instalments. I am informing as there should not be duplication of effort and time. Thanks

I am concentrating on Pt Indra Chandra as he is the nearest to his century in the blog. After his century, I will concentrate on the next artists close to century (viz Anjaan, Usha Mangeshkar etc)

Atulji,
You are absolutely right about the diggers who often identify them incorrectly and everyone else start believing in such incorrect details and these misleading details begin to get passed on among music lovers. I also belong to this flock.Thank you for alerting people like us. In future I will be careful and consult you and Arunji, if such occassion arises.

Thanks Atulji for the hardwork and effort you are putting up to bring forth not only these rare gems but also the real facts about these gems. I can appreciate your anguish when fruits of such efforts get pinched away by scavengers.
Thank once again Atulji, Nitinji and Arunji.
