Most of us have seen this movie ‘Chak De India’ made by Yashraj films and directed by Shimit Amin. There is no way to avoid seeing this on T.V. as it is there at least once a month on a weekend on some movie channel or the other. This was I think the Shah Rukh Khan response to Amir Khan-Jhamu sugandh oscar nominated ‘Lagaan’. The logic being whatever Amir Khan can do, SRK can do even better. Once upon a time the healthy competition between these two was invigorating. It gave us some fine films to see and enjoy.
As it is there frequently on T.V. I too get to see the movie’s in parts, till some one changes the channal. The song that I am discussing is ‘maula mere le le meri jaan’ . Some online music review that I found is giving high praise to this song, saying it is S D Burman’ish and also Nadeem-Shravan’ish. Now is that a high praise or a low praise ?
Once upon a time, I used to be a ‘kitaabi keeda’. I would be frequently declared missing and found in some corner reading a book. My mother never fails to remind me I would have fared better in school and college if I had been equally diligent about my studies. Seeing this interest in reading books, my father used to bring me some books to read during school vacations. One of these books was a book on Dhyan Chand. I do not remember the title of that book, but I remember the gist of it. It highlighted the career of Dhyan Chand and the glorious history of Indian Hockey. In the 80’s indian hockey was still dominating world hockey and winning Championships and medals. From the 90’s things changed and as it is the country gradually became cricket crazy after 1983 world cup. I feel that the hockey which was played on grass turf required much more skill than what we see now a days on astro turf.
The movie ‘Chak de India’ is about a Former Hockey player who is declared a traitor and sacked from the team after losing the hockey world cup Final to Pakistan. He, Kabir Khan is the captain of Indian team and fails to convert a penalty stroke into goal, there by losing the match. He is ostracized for this crime and even has to vacate his ancestral home.
Losing a match to Pakistan is unforgivable, even Sunil Gavaskar will testify to this, who reportedly got sacked as captain on the return plane journey in 1979. Now, things have changed a little as it is all about money. With huge amount of money involved, the players all are definitely playing for money first, than the team and country.
Let us come back to the movie and Kabir Khan. Some years later Kabir khan is determined to prove his credentials as a sportsman and redeem himself in the field of hockey. So with help of former teammates and well wishers, he gets a job to coach womens hockey team and prepare them for the World cup championship. There is the usual rigmarole and politics, and personal clashes among the characters in the movie. In the end the Womens Hockey team coached by Kabir Khan gels as a team and wins the World Cup. V for victory and everybody loves a winner.
Highlight of the film was a fine performance by Shah Rukh Khan as Kabir Khan. I am not a huge fan of Shah Rukh, he is frequently over the top in his acting and professional conduct. But in this film he is fantastic and suitably restrained. In films like ‘Asoka’ and ‘Devdas’, in my opinion it turned out that you can get Asoka and Devdas out of SRK but no way anyone could forget that it is SRK in those guises.
The song is composed by Salim – Sulieman and case sensitive poetry is by Jaydeep Sahni. The singers are Krishna Beura and Salim Merchant, who is one half the the music director duo. Krishan Beura is a new name for me and he is the main singer in the song. The voice is not new, as some more popular songs have been sung by him after this.
In the film, the song plays in the background at different stages, so the lyrics had not registered collectively. One really is involved in watching the movie and expressions of SRK. Shah Rukh has a huge screen presence, you can love him, hate him but cannot ignore him.
Must say I have gained a life long friend by really concentrating on the song while getting the lyrics right.
