Nazar aati nahin manzil

Posted on: June 11, 2013

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I have heard this song after some 20 years or so today. A regular song on Vividh Bharati. They played both Rafi Sahab and Chandrani Mukherjee’s versions frequently. Like many of those Rafi and Lata solo version songs, this one too is in memory, with one line following the other in the mind. So typing the lyrics is fast work. I thought the female version must be Lata’s. But it turns out that the female singer is Chandrani Mukherjee, who is gamely trying to match Rafi sahab pitch for pitch. On radio she sounded a lot better than on the ear phones on which I heard it now. The ear phones have no heart and no mercy for even the greatest of singers, so none are spared.

In the 80’s when audio cassettes suddenly became affordable, I used to record the songs directly from the 2-in-1 on the cassettes . Not just that I have even recorded songs from the old Philips radio to the cassetes by closing a room, turning the radio to full volume and bass. One song which used to sound incredible on the Philips radio was Kaali ghata chhaayee prem rut aayee from ‘Kaali Ghata'(1980). As soon as the song opening music started I had to recognize it and immediately turn to record if playing the 2-1 . I had recorded many songs like this which were never counted. Most of them belonged to my elder sister who was very possessive of them. Afterwards she moved to Bangalore and the cassettes remained at my parents place. Like all housewives, wanting the keep the house neat and clean, my mother’s favourite activity was, throwing things in the junk or giving them up to kabadiwaala :- ). Fearing that those cassette would suffer such a fate, I brought them to my place and kept moving them from one place to another in a bid to accomodate them. Every time we shifted houses, I took very special care of those cassettes and kept them in a safe place, so the kids wont touch them and rip them open. But like all things kept carefully, I hardly ever used them to listen. I am sad to report that eventually, even I turned traitorous and gave most of them to ‘kabadiwaala’ in 2006. Anyway by that time most of them were spoiled due to disuse. But sometimes when such songs which i had recorded on these cassettes, bring back the memory, making me wish I had taken better care of them , and may be some of the songs which are not available now, could have been found on those.

Fortunately, this song from the obscure movie ‘Kaanch aur Heera’ (1972), is available on youtube, both version’s audios are there in reasonably good sound. The same cannot be said for the video link of Rafi version. Audio of the video link in very very bad. I have still not forgotten the way this song and the ‘Kaali ghata’ song sounded on that old radio, with bass reduced and treble increased.

The song is written and composed by Ravindra Jain. The name of the actor who is singing Rafi version on screen is Punkaj.

One other song from this film is already posted, where Arunkumar Deshmukh Sir has given the details of the film.

Lyrics of both Rafi and Chandrani Mukherjee version lyrics are given separately, as the second stanza is different in the two versions.

Lyrics

Rafi version
—————————
nazar aati nahin manzil
tadapne se bhi kya haasil
taqdeer mein ae mere dil
andhere hi andhere hain
nazar aati nahin manzil

majboori ne jis ko maara
uss ka kaun sahaara aa
maanjhi to mil jaate hain lekin
miltaa nahin kinaara
taqdeer mein ae mere dil
andhere hi andhere hain
nazar aati nahin manzil

nainon se yoon chhin gayee jyoti
seep se jaise moti ee
ek jaan aur sau dushman hain
kaash yeh jaan na hoti
taqdeer mein ae mere dil
andhere hi andhere hain
nazar aati nahin manzil
tadapne se bhi kya haasil
taqdeer mein aye mere dil
andhere hi andhere hain
nazar aati nahin manzil

Nazar aati nahin manzil
tadapne se bhi kya haasil
taqdeer mein ae mere dil
andhere hi andhere hain
nazar aati nahin manzil

uss ka kaun sahaara aa
maanjhi to mil jaate hain lekin
miltaa nahin kinaara
taqdeer mein ae mere dil
andhere hi andhere hain
nazar aati nahin manzil

khalti hai yeh paas ki doori
jalti aas adhoori ee
kis ko koyi dosh lagaaye
sab ke sang majboori
taqdeer mein ae mere dil
andhere hi andhere hain
nazar aati nahin manzil
tadapne se bhi kya haasil
taqdeer mein ae mere dil
andhere hi andhere hain
nazar aati nahin manzil

Thank you for the beautiful post and a very good song. Enjoyed reading your post very much, which also reflected my own feelings towards my own unused cassettes(Which I am trying to save from everyone).Really all the things you have written about cassettes of songs, happened to me also.

Nahm ji, this song from Rafi saab was long awaited on our blog. Thanks ! Your write up reminds me of –
my first cassette player -‘philips’ mono,
the cassette collection story and transferring them from places to places due to change in job location,
first song I directly recorded from TV – (Rajesh Khanna-Bandhan-bina badra ke bijuriya kaise chamke),
my total cassette collection which I always used to treat as my only ‘jaydaad’ that I will leave for my children,
finally now, since last 6/7 years, when I am listening all these cassettes, though I had a new music system, but do not have the time …..

Secondly, what about the balance ‘desert’ songs still to come ?, can I suggest some?, so that all of us will get the beautiful articles to read further ….
– the first one – last month when I was on vacation I got to see this song, from the film – ZOR -1998 picturised on Milind Gunaji & (forget the heroine’s name). Kindly review !

Even I had forgotten this song, till i found it on youtube.

And i consider these songs as ‘ true national wealth ‘ which need to be preserved or most of them will be lost forever alongwith the memories of us who know them. Even tomes like hindi geetkosh are not enough, b’coz they contain the info only. What about the songs ? This is where we at this blog can make a contribution. But we have to depend on the links at youtube for the actual audio/video of the songs. Wish there was a way of separating the links from youtube, which cannot be removed.

About the ‘desert’ songs, i have a sent a few more posts, which are not posted yet. I will take a look at ‘zor’ song that your mentioned and try to include in the desert series.

This ‘desert series ‘ has become a little unconventional with many breaks in between. That does not mean i am non-serious about the series ! .

Regards.

The Chandrani Mukherji’s version on YT has poor audio quality, if someone needed female version audio in a nice digital mp3 quality feel free to contact me.
