Kaali ghata chhaayee prem rut aayee

Posted on: January 15, 2013

“Kaali Ghata” (1980) was a Shivalik pictures production movie. It was produced and directed by Ved Raahi. The movie had Shashi Kapoor, Rekha, Danny, Aruna Irani, Lalita Pawar, A K Hangal, Jagdeep, Jankidas etc in it.

Long back, when I was discussing songs of “Kaali Ghata” (1951), Peevesie’s mom had sent the lyrics of the title song from “Kaali Ghata”. It is just that this was “Kaali Ghata” (1980) and not “Kaali Ghata” (1951) but that had stumped me for some time . 🙂

This song has two versions. The solo version is sung by Lata whereas the duet is sung by Rafi and Lata. Both versions are picturised on Rekha and Shashi Kapoor.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Kaali ghata chhaayi
prem rut aayi
aayi aayi aayi aayi
teri yaad aayi
kaali ghata chhaayi
prem rut aayi
aayi aayi aayi aayi
teri yaad aayi
tujhe dhoondhe ae ae mere nain
nahin neend nahin chain
kaali ghata chhaayi
prem rut aayi
aayi aayi aayi aayi
teri yaad aayi

yoon hi nahin chali aayi bahaarein
phool yoon hi nahin khile ae
yoon hi nahin chali aayi bahaarein
phool yoon hi nahin khile ae
kuchh to hain karan itne yugon se
do premi nahin miley
chhota sa jeevan lambi judaayi ee
kaali ghata chhaayi
prem rut aayi
aayi aayi aayi aayi
teri yaad aayi

parbat parbat gulshan gulshan
mele milan ke lage ae

ek hi pal mein neend se jaise
dard hazaaron jage
dil ki lagi ne li angdaayi
kaali ghata chhaayi
prem rut aayi
aayi aayi aayi aayi
teri yaad aayi

birha ki kaali raaton ke
rang se kaajal bana aa
birha ki kaali raaton ke
rang se kaajal bana aa
kaajal mil gaya ansuwan mein
toh kaala baadal bana
is baadal ne aag lagaayi ee
kaali ghata chhaai
prem rut aayi
aayi aayi aayi aayi
teri yaad aayi

This song will also fit into the category of “Haunting songs”.
In my personal opinion,Lata ji always sings such type of songs with more intensity. Also for such songs by Laxmi pyare-Anand Bakshi combination, she gave her special touch.

Thank you Atul jee
Bahut dinon ke baad 70`s ke gaanon kaa baarish huaa hai. Pyaase ki pyaas thodaa saa bujh gayee.

And my Favourite actress (post Khoosurat) played a double role in this. i saw almost all Rekha movies for some years after that but felt bad that i couldn’t see this one as it fared just okey dokey at the BO. & this was a murder mystery with everyone suspecting everyone else but AK Hangal the actual murderer. howzatt?

Rekha is my favourite too, She is still my favourite

But in this movie, if my memory serves me right, she kept on changing the wigs in different scenes.
I think this movie has got some scenes picturised on her before her personality transformation period(i.e., bad wigs and different set of make up features etc etc.)

Another song from this movie is also very good having lyrics “Behroopiyaa” and one cabret song having lyrics like”Dil ke jharokhe mein……Dhokhaa hi dhokhaa” is also good(Whether that was picturised on Aruna irani ??)

I remember NOT seeing this movie when it was released. Those were the days when a Jeetendra movie seemed to be getting released every other week. Usually a remake of a South Indian movie. Or at least made by a South Indian producer. Often he would be opposite Rekha or Reena Roy or somebody like that. I used to stay away from such movies – though many of them would do ok. And the songs would be hits.

This was one of those movies. This title song was quite popular.

A few years ago I decided to catch up on a lot of “those” movies. That is how I got to see movies to “Aasha”, “Ek Hi Bhool’, “Maang Bharo Sajna” . And this movie – Kaali Ghata.

I was actually quite pleasantly surprised by this movie. I thought it would be one of those typical family dramas but it turned out to be a thriller. And quite an interesting one. Worth watching, in my opinion. Only then I realised that this was not one of those South Indian production house movies.

Note: I mean no disrespect to South Indian producers. I’ve since seen a lot of their movies. And I’ve developed respect for their storylines. It is just that at that time, those Jeetu movies were not exactly my cup of tea. 🙂

Oops, this movie does not even have Jeetendra!!! And all along I’ve been under the impression that this was a Jeetu movie. I must have got it totally confused with another Jeetu movie – I think I got it confused with Pyaasa Saawan.

I’ve really lost it now!!! 🙂

When the film was complete the producer-director deemed fit to show the movie to Hrishida for his comments(In those most of them would show their films to Hrishida as he was director and editor par excellent) As the movie had double role of Rekha he suggested to introduced them separately upfront to avoid confusion in the minds of the viewers later.

Atul Ji, definitely a haunting song. I was surprised to see a duet version of the song, as it seems to be in the movie, and not mentioned on the LP cover.. where solo numbers by Lata & Rafi are listed. Arun Ji, please clarify :).

Like

Director must have been picturised the seperate solos as a duet , by editing and linking the male and female solo versions of this song. That Edited version appears as duet version to audiences on screen.

That explains it Prakash Ji. Thank you :).
