The 7th song selected for the series today is from the film ” Piya Milan “-1958 and here Lata is singing with Jagmohan Bakshi and Usha Mangeshkar.
In the Hindi film industry, there were several ” Same-name ” artistes and this caused lot of misinformation and confusion. Many times the films and the songs are credited to wrong artistes, thus doing injustice to the real persons.
Some of the confusions are recurrent, meaning that these are raised from time to time,by young readers or by those who are in a hurry to be called ‘experts’ of film knowledge. They remind me of the old adage..’ Nim Hakeem- khatar-e-jaan ‘. Such people do more harm and injustice to the correct artistes.
The most common recurrent confusions are about the actor/singer Rattanbai and Ratanbai Shilotri, mother of Shobhana Samarth,Actor/singer Shyam Kumar and Actor Shyam and Actor/director Asit Sen with director Asit Sen.
These matters are explained time and again, but still someone, somewhere raises the issue and a discussion ensues. If we see that, then we try to explain the matter.
Besides these 3 common ‘Name-alikes’,there are others too- Neelam, Noorjehan, Raajkumar, Rajkumari, Zoherabai, Gauharjan, Najmul Hussain, Several Khurshids, Shashi Kapoor, Trilok Kapoor, Amarnath, Roshan,Arun kumar ( Not me ), Vimla Kumari etc etc.
JAGMOHAN is also one of the names causing confusion. Jagmohan Sursagar( Jaganmoy Mitra) and Jagmohan Bakshi are sometimes confused with each others. Both were Music Directors and Singers. Jagmohan Sursagar is known for his NFS mainly rather that as a composer and Jagmohan Bakshi is more known as a Music Director (with Sapan) rather than as a singer.
Jagmohan Bakshi was born on 29-7-1929 at Murrie in Punjab. When he came to Bombay he became friends with Sapan Sengupta( born 0n 17-7-1932 at Silhet,Bengal). They stayed in a Bombay Suburb and sang in Chorus groups. Jagmohan got his first break as a singer in Taxi Driver-1954, in a duet with Asha Bhonsle (Dekho maane nahin, roothi haeesna), under S D Burman. Then he sang a duet with Rafi in Hamlet-54, in Zindagi-56 with Balbir and Sudha Malhotra. Finally he sang in Piya Milan-58 with Usha and Lata Mangeshkar.
Though he gave music to about 50 films, along with Sapan (as Sapan-Jagmohan jodi), he never sang again. Surprisingly, he never sang even a single solo song in Hindi anytime !
Film “Piya Milan” was originally a Tamil film MARMAVEERA-56, dubbed in Hindi by R R Productions. The film was originally made by Jubilee films, Madras.
The star cast was Shri Ram, Vyjayantimala, Raja Sulochana, V.Nagaiah, T S Baliah, P S Veerappa, Tanghvelu, Chandra Babu etc.
The Hindi version was directed by Raghunath and the music was by Ramesh Naidu.
Most songs were having the same tunes as given by the Tamil original’s composer S.Vedhu. The Hindi songs were written by Harsh(3) and Hasrat Jaipuri(6).
The greatest attraction of this film was the Guest appearance by N T Rama Rao, Sivaji Ganeshan and Gemini Ganeshan.
Pasupuleti Ramesh Naidu (Born-1933,Died 2-9-2005) was born in Kondapally in Krishna District (Andhra Pradesh). He was so obsessed with music that he ran away and landed in Bombay when he was 14 year old. B R Chopra took him under his wings and Ramesh learnt Instrumentation and orchestration in HMV at Bombay.
He started his music career at the age of 17 years with a Marathi film ” Bhandawal Paahije “-1950, produced, Directed and acted by Kishore Sahu. After a few years he went back to Andhra and got married. He got a son also and then he came to Bombay, on his way to Calcutta. he spent 10 years there giving music to Bangla, Oriya and Nepali films.
He was invited to Madras and he gave music to Amma mata-72. He settled there with his family. He gave music in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. He came to Bombay from time to time to give music to Dubbed and Remade films from South. He also gave music in a few Bhojpuri films. His Hindi films were Hamlet-54, Jay Simha-54, Piya Milan-58, Nartaki Chitra-65, Ganga Bhavani-79, Azaadi ki Oar-86,and Hum bhi kuch kam nahin-1983.
His first south film was Dampatyam-57 and last was Ish Gup chup-1993.
He surpassed Salil Chaudhari by giving music in 10 indian laguages( Salil da gave music in 9 ).
Ramesh Naidu got the National Award for film ‘Megh Sandesham’.
Naidu left this world on 2-9-2005, at Hyderabad.
Ramesh Naidu is making a Debut in this Blog with this song.
PIYA MILAN-1958 was a story of Kings, Queens and the palace matters. The storyline was…
Maharaja Kulshekhara is the king of Kurni Empire. He has a beautiful daughter Vijaya (Vyjayanti mala), who is in love with a young rich boy, Mahinder (Shri Ram).
Maharaja Parakram Bahu of the neighbouring kingdom comes calling and before going back proposes to Vijaya. he is told that she is already engaged and this alliance is not possible.
Parakram goes back enraged. He consults his vazir, Nari and they decide to destroy Kulshekhara.
They tempt Shrimantha, the commander of Kulshekhar and then attack Kurni, capture the Maharaja and abduct Vijaya.
The kingdom is then given to Shrimantha. Shrimantha and his cronies torture the poor Janata and loot them.
Suddenly, a masked man called PARAMVEER appears from nowhere and protects the oppressed janata. He also punishes the cronies and Looters.
Meanwhile Parakram Bahu decided to marry Vijaya forcibly.
Getting this news, Paramveer attacks Parakram Bahu in the night ,captures him and rescues the princess Vijaya.
Then Param veer leads a mutiny and defeats Shrimantha and rescues maharaja Kulshekhara.
Finally, it is revealed that Param Veer is no one else but it is Mahinder ,the fiance of Vijaya.
All is well, after this.

The music director of Jaisimha was T.V. Raju., and Ramesh Naidu for Jaisingh though many songs had the same tunes. This was not unusual those days I think. Also I am not sure when Ramesh Naidu married, but his wife was a Bengali according to Wikipedia. I always wondered whether the choice of Malavika Sarkar for Ananda Bhairavi had some thing to do with this Bengali connection. But it seems that the director saw her on a TV show and decided that she was suitable for the role.

Anand ji,
Jaisimha was a Telugu film and the MD was T V Raju. Jaisingh was a remake/dubbed version of this Telugu film in Hindi for which Ramesh Naidu was the MD. Jaisingh written in Hindi (Devnagari script) is written like JAISIMHA ( ref-see the HFGK),therefore I said both are same.
