The Voice of Mukesh #21
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The year 1947 was very good for Mukesh, till then the best so far in his seven years career. In this year, he recorded a total of 21 songs in 10 films. We have so far covered 17 of his songs from this year, including all the songs from the film ‘Do Dil’ in which he sang as many as six songs.

Next to ‘Di Dil’ comes the film ‘Tohfaa’ for which Mukesh recorded five songs, three solos and two duets with Hameeda Bano. Three of Mukesh’s songs from this film are already showcased on this blog. Here is the fourth Mukesh song for this film. This is a solo song, and seems to be a rare one, as I am not able to locate it online anywhere so far.

‘Tohfaa’ (1947) is a film from Seth Brothers Productions, Bombay, directed by the renowned author and poet, Agha Jaani Kashmiri. The music for this film is composed by MA Rauf (Osmania). There are 10 songs in this film, written by as many 6 poets – Sakib Lakhanvi, Aarzoo Lakhanvi, Nazeer Hyderabadi, Rafiq Ghazanvi, Shant Arora and Agha Jaani Kashmiri. This song is written by Nazeer Hyderabadi. The list of actors for this film includes Nawab, Veera, Anuradha, Rehman, Mishra, Basant Malini, T N Charlie, Agha Mirza, Masiha, Shakuntala, Pushpa, Baby Janet, Anita etc.

Our in house encyclopedia, Arun ji Deshmukh has provided the following details about the music director MA Rauf (Osmania).

MA Rauf was from Hyderabad and a graduate from Osmania University. always used to put Osmania in brackets after his name. The songs he composed for ‘Tohfa’ particularly the ones sung by Mukesh were tremendous hits and Mukesh himself liked those songs. Rauf also gave music to ‘Beete Din’ (1947) and ‘Basera/ (1950).

It seems that some people who joined the film industry were conscious of their educational background, and were prone to use it in the names they put up for the credits. So we have the song writer Moti BA and the music director Chitragupt MA. Now we have an example where the person is using the name of his university as part of his credentials.

I do not have any additional information about the film and would request more knowledgeable readers to please add more info for the film, as also for the picturization of this song.

The song itself is an inspirational song, exhorting to light the lamps of hope in the darkness and disappointment. As always, it is the voice of Mukesh that lends so much beauty and strength to the song – rendered really so well. Enjoy this rare melody, being played again after many decades.

Thanks for a treat of a very very rare song.I have heard this song for the first time.

Mukesh’s songs in ‘Tohfa’ (1947) were in different league than his songs in other films thanks to the unusual music composition style of M A Rauf Osmania.

Sudhir Ji,

Thanks for this song and a great write-up.

Regarding the missing Mukesh song from Nirdosh – 1941, I believe the former cricketer B. S. Chandrasekhar has an extensive collection of rare songs by Mukeshji. Is it possible to contact him and request his help?
