Chal meri gadiye tu chhuk chhuk chhuk

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Here is yet another Golden song from the film EK DO TEEN-1953.

After the success of EK THI LADKI-1949, Roop K Shorey tried to replicate its success with other films, with the same team, but till his end he could never achieve that.

At last he even tried a similar plot in EK THI REETA-1971, with Tanuja and Vinod Mehra, adding his lucky pair, Johar and Majnu. However , by now, his usual Lyricist Aziz Kashmiri had left him and was with O P Nayyar enjoying success, so he had to settle with others. Similarly, his dear friend composer Vinod had departed, so he had to be satisfied with Jaidev for music. For added attraction, two newcomers,Pompy and Monica were taken with a dash of Faryal, but all this Masala could not cook a delicious dish and no one noticed when this film came and went !

It was always a delight to watch Meena Shorey on the screen. In this film EK DO TEEN, she was assigned some scenes which would normally fit into a ” Fearless Nadia ” film of the 30s. Here she was supposed to hijack a car, steal and run a Train and even fly an Aeroplane ! Luckily she did not do any stunts herself, which anyway would not have suited her image of a petite, lovely and boisterous girl.

Actually it was a lovely and entertaining, enjoyable film, if you looked at it in isolation, but alas,Shorey had made his every film almost on the lines of Ek Thi Ladki- give or take few ideas. And this was what that reduced all the fun in the film. The lead pair was the same-Motilal and Meena.

Motilal, Rehman and Ashok Kumar were all natural actors. The other day, I was reading the Biography of Nutan (in Marathi ) by journalist Lalita Tamhane, in which Nutan has given her comments on many actors and directors like Dev, Dilip, Raj, Rehman, Ashok Kumar, Balraj Sahni,Parikshit Sahni, Amitabh Bachchan, Bimal Roy and others. Nutan has said nothing about Motilal, for obvious reasons(Her mother Shobhana Samarth and Motilal were special friends). This book( Asen mee…Nasen mee is highly readable).

I always liked Motilal for his looks and his ease of acting. He almost lived the character he portrayed in the film. He was adept at doing serious as well as comic role with equal elan.

Here is what I had said about this film EK DO TEEN, about an year ago,on this blog-

EK DO TEEN-1953 was a Shorey Films productionn. It was produced and directed by Roop k Shorey.

After the phenomenal success of ‘Ek thi Ladki’, it became an obsession with Roop K Shorey and in almost all his subsequent films he tried to repeat this formula in some way or the other. In this film also he repeated the hit jodi of Meena and Motilal, along with Music Director Vinod and his so called lucky mascot Majnu as a side kick of Motilal. However he could not ever recreate the same magic, still till his last film in life, he made a remake of Ek thi Ladki in the film EK THI RITA, but faled with this too.

EK DO TEEN was comparatively a better made film. The story, dialogues and screenplay were by Krishna Chander, who included lot of adventures for the heroine in the last part of the film.

Moti(Motilal) is a happy go lucky son of Seth Ramlal(Ramesh Thakur) who is a multimillionaire. One day Moti finds a beautiful wounded girl, Roma(Meena Shorey) on the road. He brings her to his house for treatment. Roma is the daughter of Seth Madanlal(K N Dar). While Roma is recovering, love blooms between the two, which is not liked by Madanlal. However after some time the parents agree for their marriage and the date is fixed.

Just a few days befor the marriage, Ramlal falls sick and dies, so the marriage is postponed. While dying Ramlal gives three advises to Moti-
1. Never Drink
2.Never have a paid woman and
3.Never tell a secret to a woman.

Moti decides to test these bits of advise, along with his friend Hiralal(Majnu). They start drinking merrily, but one day the misbehave in a club and are put behind bars. So,Moti says this advice is right. Next they hire a woman for enjoyment. The woman seems to be good looking, good natured and well behaved. After a few days, Moti sees the same woman in daytime in her house. Seeing that she uses a wig, dentures and heavy make up and that she is a qerrulous woman, Moti decides that the second advice is also correct.

One day during a heated argument, Moti stabs Hiralal who dies of the wound. Moti hides his blood stained clothes and also tells Roma all about it. Roma keeps the secret for a few days, but falls sick as she cannot keep the secret anymore. She tells all about the murder to her best friend Rani(Yashodhara Katju). Roma now gets well, but Rani falls sick after a few days. She also tells this secret to her husband-who is a DIG of Police. He takes action and Moti is arrested.
Moti and Hiralal had played a drama in fact. Hiralal was very much alive and hiding. Moti is prosecuted for murder and sentenced to Death by hanging. He calls Roma and asks her to bring Hiralal. Hiralal is entangled in a love affair and disappears. The date of hanging nears.

Roma desperately searches for Hiralal. In that process once she steals a whole train, drives a bus, travels on a Railway trolley and even travels by Air. All these events are quite hilarious in the film and the public was happy to see all that.

Finally, Hiralal is traced and all is well in the end withMoti getting released with a court warning.

Thus Moti finds that all 3(EK,DO,TEEN) told by his father were right.

Now let us enjoy today’s song which is picturised as a train song, with the train being stolen by Meena Shorey as mentioned above.

The reference made to the comments in the book by Nutan is intriguing. As some/many of us may not have access to the book, let alone be able to read in Marathi, I wonder if Mr. arunkumar Deshmukh, as context permits, give us snippets of these obeservations of hers on various actors.

I have always appreciated Nutan as a very smart and intelligent actress, capable of a broad range of characters, from the innocent village girl in Bandini to the sophisticate in Tere Ghar Ke Samne.

Krishna ji,
Nice to see your comments after ages,on this Blog.
Your suggestion is good and I am trying in my next few posts to present some ‘snippets’ from Nutan’s Biography. Perhaps You may be aware(or may not be also) that I have done 10 continuous posts describing C.Ramchandra’s Autobiography,in Marathi,on this Blog
from 30-1-2013 to 11-2-2013.
As far as Motilal’s reference is concerned,in her book, not much can be said about it.
