Sajna ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee

Posted on: July 21, 2013

“Aasra” (1966) was a Seven Arts Pictures production. It was produced by Madan Mohla and directed by Satyen Bose. The movie had Mala Sinha, Biswajeet, Balraj Sahni, Ameeta, Nirupa Roy, Jagdeep, David Abraham, Pravin Paul, Deepak Mukherjee, Bela Bose, Laxmi Chhaya, Baby Farida, Polson, Sabina, Lata Arora, Archana Kapoor, Narbada Shanker, Mukunda Bannerjee, Master Shaid, Master Javed, Baby Guddi, Baby Pammi, Baby Minoti etc in it.

Today is the 93rd birth anniversary of Anand Bakshi (21 july 1920- 30 march 2002). On this occasion, here is a song from “Aasra” (1966). The song is a mujra song which is sung by Lata and Usha Mangeshkar and it is picturised on Bela Bose and Laxmi Chhaayaa. The are shown performing their dance in the wedding reception of Jagdeep (I am unable to identify the lady who plays his bride) and the gathering has lots of people, viz Biswajeet, Mala Sinha, Balraj Sahni,David and others whom I cannot identify.

The lyrics of this song are mentioned as “sajna kidhar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee” everywhere on internet, but on careful listening to the line, it sounds like “sajna ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee” to me.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
o o o o o o o
sajnaa ke dar saari

soyaa zamaanaa aa aa

hamein
neend naa aayee ee ee
sajnaa ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee
sajnaa ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee

adaay e husn pe marnaa
tumhein naa aataa thaa aaa aaa aaa aaa
adaay e husn pe marnaa
tumhein naa aataa thaa aa aa aa
meri gali se guzarnaa
tumhein naa aataa thaa

huzoor pyaar bhi karnaa
tumhein naa aataa thaa
aayee kahaan se
aayee kahaan se taubaa
ye bewafaayee ee ee
sajnaa ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee
sajnaa ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee

hamein toh yaar deewaana
banaa diyaa tumne ae ae ae
hamein toh yaar deewaana
banaa diyaa tumne ae ae

zaraa si baat fasaanaa
banaa diyaa tumne
ke roz kal kaa bahaana
banaa diyaa tumne
aayee qayaamat
aayee qayaamat
lekin kal nahin aayee ee ee

sajnaa ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee
sajnaa ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee

mere khudaa ki badi
mujhpe meharbaani thi ee ee
mere khudaa ki badi
mujhpe meharbaani thi ee ee
guzar rahi thi ye jaissee bhi zindgaani thi
jo bazm-e-gair mein jaakar shamaa jalaani thi
hamre jiyaa mein
hamre jiyaa mein
kaahe aag lagaayee ee ee
sajnaa ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee
sajnaa ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee

ratiyaan gawaayee
ratiyaan gawaayee
sajnaa ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee
sajnaa ke dar saari ratiyaan ganwaayee

Dear Prakashchandra-ji / Atul-ji
The ‘Mukhada’ is “Sajana Kithher Saari Ratiyan Gawaayin” meaning ‘Sajana, where did you spent the whole night?”
BTW, I had attended this LP recording as an apprentice sound engineer at the Famous Cine Lab near Tardeo, Mumbai.

It sounds like “Ke dar” to me. Perhaps the pronounciation of the singers is not correct if it was supposed to be “kidhar”.

I agree with you that pronunciation of the singers were not correct.
Also ‘ke dar saari saari ratiyan gawaayin’ does not make any seance and also grammatically wrong.
The dancers gestures also suggest ‘WHERE’.
