Badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki ye shaam

Posted on: August 3, 2013

“Aadhi Raat Ke Baad” (1965) was produced by T C Dewan and directed by Naanbhai Bhatt under the banner of Movie Fare productions. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Ragini, Sailesh Kumar, Agha, Sajjan, Ulhas, Murad, Jankidass, Rajan Haksar, Padma Chawhan, Naina, Balam, Randhir, Kundan, Majnu, Mohan Lal etc in it.

Three songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is another song from the movie. It is sung by Lata. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

The YT link mentions the title of this song as “Badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki shaam”. On going through the picturisation, Raagini and a few other ladies are seen dressed oriental style, so may be the song is about “Rangoon” (even though the pronounciation sounds like “rangon” viz colours ).

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M. This is the 400th lyrics contribution by Atif M, who pioneered the concept of lyrics contribution to this blog. I take this opportunity to congratulate Atif M on behalf of us all. Here is hoping that he will continue to enrich the blog with his valuable lyrics contributions and he will continue to scale many more milestones as this musical journey continues to roll on.

Song-Badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki ye shaam (Aadhi Raat Ke Baad)(1965) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Chitragupta

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki yeh shaam
badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki yeh shaam
nazar bhar dekh lo
jannat hai isi ka naam
badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki yeh shaam

rangeele raaston pe kuchh aise hain nazaare
utar aaye hon jaise zameen pe chaand taare
rangeele raaston pe kuchh aise hain nazaare
utar aaye hon jaise zameen pe chaand taare
jidhar ja ke nazar thehre
wahin pe samjho
dil ko mil gaya aaraam
badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki yeh shaam
badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki yeh shaam

hai dooba mastiyon mein
yahaan saara zamaana
kahin pe tu bhi kho ja
kahe mausam suhaana
hai dooba mastiyon mein
yahaan saara zamaana
kahin pe tu bhi kho ja
kahe mausam suhaana
idhar dekho
zara hans ke
ke deti hai nazar tumko pyaar ka paighaam
badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki yeh shaam
badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki yeh shaam

na jaane is hawa mein
nasha kaisa bhara hai
ke jo ik baar aaya
yahin ka ho gaya hai
na jaane is hawa mein
nasha kaisa bhara hai
ke jo ik baar aaya
yahin ka ho gaya hai
machalne do
jo dil machle
ke dekha jaayega jo ho pyaar ka anjaam
badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki yeh shaam
badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki yeh shaam
nazar bhar dekh lo
jannat hai isi ka naam
badi rangeen hai Rangoon ki yeh shaam

Looking at the setting of the scene, costumes and the rest of the lyrics describing a place, I think it’s “Rangoon”, not “rangon”.

It is ‘Rangoon’; because the story of the movie takes place in ‘Rangoon’, Burma !!

Yes, in all likelihood it is Rangoon. All the pointers point to Rangoon and if one listens to Lata carefully, she does seem to say “Rangoon ki yeh shaam”.

The iconic “Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon” remains the most famous Rangoon song, though.

Since Burma became Myanmar, Rangoon has also become Yangon. These names sound so alien and unfamiliar, don’t they? The ‘apnapan’ oozes out from Burma and Rangoon! Imagine singing – Mere Piya Gaye Yangon!!!

This song should be tagged under “Songs about a place” category. Or an altogether new category such as “City songs” can be created to accommodate this and many other songs of similar ilk.

AD, thanks a bunch for your kind words. 🙂
