“A very very sad day for Indian music” – that is the words that Pradeep ji has expressed just now, in his email response.
Manna Da, the voice behind the sounds of the rousing “Upar Gagan Vishaal,Neeche Gehraa Pataal” and the chartbusting peppy number “Aaao Twist Karen”, is silenced today. A voice that has regaled music lovers for over seven decades now, will not be heard any more. Manna Da breathed his last early morning today, at a hospital in Bangalore, having been unwell for the past few months.
Born with the name Prabodh Chandra Dey, he was given the name ‘Manna’ by his uncle, KC Dey, another legendary singer. Over the decades, Manna Da had made a place for himself in the top echelons of playback singing in the film industry, as well as in the non film world. His songs are legends now. His rendition unmatched by any other singer. His mastery over the classical style and the manner of exploring and exploiting the far reaches of voice expressions is an eminent domain that very few would even be qualified to step in.
The treasure of music that he has bequeathed to this world is an abundance of cherishable riches. His presence on this earth was the good fortune of music lovers, and a gift from the Almighty. The words from the ‘Mashaal’ song come to the mind – “. . .Waah Mere Maalik, Tu Ne Kiya Kamaal”. Yes, it is a gift of wondrous dimensions that He had presented to us. A soul that had come from the home of His maker, into this world, to sing these words, for us,
kori chunariya, aatmaan mori
mael hai maaya jaal
wo duniya morey babul ka ghar
ye duniya sasural
jaa ke babul se nazren milaaun kaise
ghar jaaun kaise. . .
And today, Manna Da has started his journey back to the home of his ‘baabul’.
Pradeep ji also wrote, “. . . but Manna Dey can never die”.
As long as there is sound in the universe, Manna Da will be alive. And as we say in our culture, sound is forever.

Poochho na kaisse maine raain betaayee
Dharti kahe pukaar ke,beej bichhaa le pyaar ke,mausab beetaa jaaye
Kasmein vaade pyaar waffa sab
Jeevan se lambe hai bandhu, yeh jeevan ke raste
Lagaa chunri mein daag, chhuppaaoon kaisse
Nadiya chale chale rey dhaaraa…tujhko chalnaa hogaa
Zaindagi kaissi ye pehli haayye
Hansne ki chaah ne, kitnaa mujhe rulaayaa hai
Aie mere pyaare watan, aei mere bichhde chaman
Har taraf ab yehi afsaane hain, hum tere aankhon ke deewaane hain
Tumhari hi mutti mein hain chaand taare

sur na saje, kyaa gaaoon main
jhanak jahank torey baaje paayaliya
tore nainaa talaash kare
Rey mann sur mein gaa
shraab ka sahaaraa maine le liyaa
Tujhe suraj kahoon ya chandaa
saanjh dhali dil ki lagi, thak gayee pukaar ke
Dil ki grih khol do, chhupp na baitto
Aei mere zohar jabeen, tujhe maloom nahin
Abhi toh pehlaa jaam hai, taubaa kitne kaam hai
Ab kahaan jaaye hum, ye bataa ai zameen
Nanhe munhe bachche teri mutti mein kyaa hai
Chalat musafir moh liya,pijrewaali muniyaa
pyaar huaa iqraar huaa hai
aa jaa sanam, madhur chaandni mein
ye raat bheegi bheegi
Masti bharaa ye samaa
pyaar bhari ye ghataayein

For Manna the Day has arrived. God may have snatched him away from us but He cannot take away the formidable legacy left behind by the indomitable Manna Dey. Great singer. Greater human. Thanks for regaling us with your numbers in the past and thanks to the technology you will be regaling us for posterity.

What a wonderful song, sung by Manna Da! I had heard this song and loved it in my younger days, and found the song to be as meaningful as ever even today. He will always be remembered as the versatile singer who could do bhajans, folk songs, romantic songs, and popular songs with the same effortless ease as his classical songs. I for one, will always remember his concert where he sang Malayalam songs along with the Hindi and Bengali songs and kept us entranced for three hours.
Thanks for this wonderful tribute, Sudhir ji and Atul!
