In keeping with the festive season and party atmosphere, here is a party song. This is a duet song of Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhonsle, from the film ‘Andaz’ (1971). The lyricist is Hasrat Jaipuri and composers are Shankar-Jaikishan.

The picturization is a Christmas, New year, masquerade, holloween all rolled into one party. If there was a cake visible, it would have been a birthday. In the movie I think it was Christmas party. David is the host and Shammi Kapoor and Hema Malini are singing this song.

What a wonderfully original thought this is :

dil usey do jo jaan de de
jaan usey do jo dil de de

Not that it is all imperative in life to give heart to someone as well as life. But these tender human emotions are what is keeping this world ticking. The hidden philosophy behind this inspiring line is an advice of discretion and discrimination. The poet in his wisdom is telling us to keep it close and not be careless in giving our affections away to the undeserving and unworthy. The ‘tambeeh’ here is about being responsible.

Well, it is as if I have known this song all my life, but never got around to thinking what the words actually entail. One of these things which if we stop to think about, they reveal a lot.

The song is so upbeat if someone is feeling down, this is enough to revive the spirits. The lyrics are all through inspiring and motivating. The picturization is also festive.

But one would look at the whole song, the movie and some more movies of Hema Malini and think how could someone look so beautiful. I know Hema Malini is known as dream girl. But even a dream cannot be so ‘fantabulous’. The smile alone and the graceful screen presence of Hema Malini, make her second only to Madhubala. The way she carries herself , without any specific ‘andaz’ and ‘adaayen’, her being natural and so, so comfortable in her own skin all add to her allure.

The audio version is slightly different with more chorus contribution, so the lyrics are given as per the audio version.

Overall it is an enjoyable, thought provoking party song.
