(Happy birthday Vijay Anand – 22nd January)
‘Do Khilaadi-1973’, ‘Double Cross-1973’ and ‘Tofaan-1975’??
No! Nothing similar among these three films, Except that I got to watch these films back to back during our stay at a small town on one of the tour programmes accompanying my parents for their plays (my parents used to act in Marathi plays).( And this may be in 1975-76).
Years after years passed but some memories of these films kept haunting me. These memories were a few songs from these movies, viz. ‘jhoomta saawan dekho aaya, barkha ne pyaar barsaayaa’, ‘main jhonkaa mast hawaa ka.. .’ and the third memory was a masked hero riding a horse (wearing a black mask like ‘Zoro’ and a sword in one hand).
So, when I took up the hobby of collecting music in 1985 and started getting audio cassettes regularly thereafter, I was constantly searching for these songs.
As we progressed to the era of ‘internet’ and ‘Google search’, I continued my search with new enthusiasm. But they were not available and kept eluding me until 2009 when I got my first wish completed, that of the song ‘jhoomta saawan dekho aaya’ was discussed on our blog and two years later I got the mp3 version of this song.
‘On continuing the search further, I came to know that the song ‘main jhonkaa mast hawaa ka’ was from a film Double Cross (till then I thought that it may be from the film ‘Banphool’) but neither its audio nor video was available.
Then, the third ‘memory’ was of the film ‘Toofan’ and its hero Vikram!
The search results on net only showed the film ‘Toofan’ of Amitabh Bachchan. (Searching old films by names becomes interesting when new films of the same ‘title’ are displayed in the results, and as we go on adding other information like year of the release etc. and finally get the desired results, this moment of ‘joy’ could not be explained in words).
Finally, one day I came nearer to the search and and the results started showing entries of ‘Toofan-1975’ as well. Still the poster, the ‘masked hero’, and other details were not available. And only 10-15 days back the search results showed this poster of ‘Toofan’ (1975 film) and now songs of this film are also available on ‘you tube’.
We actually do not know how things would happen, and how the world has changed for us the music lovers. The numerous sites have made available all the forgotten songs available for us, even the videos, and my thanks to all of them!!
And last but not the least! Our blog – it had has become an ‘immortal treasure’ for all of us.
When I calculate the elapsed time from the release year of the later film to the present day assuming that I watched these movies in 1975, the year of release of “Toofaan”(1975), it comes to 38 years, when I finally I succeeded in getting the songs of all the three movies that I was looking for.
I do not remember much about this film ‘Double Cross’. Its review is available on Membaab’s blog.
Vijay Anand for me (and for that matter for all of us) is the great Director of films like ‘Tere ghar ke saamne’, ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, ‘Teesri Manzil’, ‘Johny Meraa Naam’, Jewel Theif’, ‘Tere Mere Sapney’, and of course the master piece ‘Guide’.
On his birth anniversary today let us enjoy this song sung by Kishore Kumar and picturised on him. This movie had music by the great R.D.Burman and lyrics by Majrooh Saab. There are two nice duets ‘Jeevan bhar ke liye tu mere saath hai’ , ‘Maine tumko chaaha hai pehli baar ’ in this film, which I think have been forgotten as the movie was not successful. The movie was directed by Gogi Anand. Vijay Anand edited the movie and he got the BJFA award for ‘Best Editing’ for this movie.

Lyrics
Main jhonkaa
mast hawaa kaa
subah yahaan
shaam wahaan
main jhonkaa
mast hawaa kaa
subah yahaan
shaam wahaan
jo mujhko
arrey baandh rahaa
wo hai badaa nadaan
hurr
main jhonkaa
mast hawaa kaa
subah yahaan
shaam wahaan
jo mujhko arey baandh rahaa
wo hai badaa nadaan
mujhko aate jaate
naazuk tan lehraake
tirachhi nazaron se naa dekhnaa
maano mere pyaaron
thhak jaaoge yaaron
baahon ke phandey naa phenknaa
to chhodo bhi
mere liye
aahein kyaaa
bharnaa
main jhonkaa
mast hawaa kaa
subah yahaan
shaam wahaan
jo mujhko
arrey baandh rahaa
wo hai badaa
naadaan
meri har phulwaari
sab kaliyon se yaari
har daali hai meraa aashiyaan
sadkon pe
galiyon mein
laakhon rang raliyon mein
naach rahi meri parchhaaeeyaan
to saaye ko
thaamne ki
koshish naa aa aa karnaa
main jhonkaa
mast hawaa kaa
subah yahaan
shaam wahaan
jo mujhko
arrey baandh rahaa
wo hai badaa naadaan
