Today (26 january 2014) is the 65th republic day of India. It is one of the most important and significant day in the history of Independent India, because it was on this day in 1950 that India became a democratic Republic unlike how it had been earlier. For the first time in the long history of India, all people were guaranteed equal rights and opportunities under the Indian constitution, something which was unimaginable till then.

Every year on this day, national flag is hoisted at all important work places. The main function is held in New Delhi where the national flag is hoisted by the president of India at the India Gate and that is followed by an impressive march past takes place at Rajpath where all states are represented through their tableaus. Smaller functions are held at other places throughout India. It is one of the two most important national festivals in India, the other being the Independence day.

Here is a song for the occasion from a movie from days before Independence. This song is from “Chaand” (1944). It is sung by G M Durrani and Manju. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.

Here are the views of Sudhir Ji about this song:

The film ‘Chand’ from the banner of Prabhat Film Company, came in 1944, two years after the film ‘Kismet’ which is a 1942 production from Bombay Talkies. The magic that was created by Kavi Pradeep and Anil Biswas, with the foot stomping martial song of patriotism “Door Hato Ae Duniya Waalo, Hindustan Hamaara Hai” is being attempted once again in this song by Qamar Jalaalabaadi and Husnlal Bhagatram. The tone and the on screen presentation are very similar. Rather, in this song, the director has tried to do one better by bringing horses on stage. Prem Adeeb leads the march on horseback, trying his best to emulate the on screen singing leadership provided by a handicapped Mumtaz Shanti sporting a pair of crutches in the ‘Kismet’ song. The young companion to Prem Adeeb, the smaller horse rider who comes on stage to perform the third stanza, is Balakram, who plays the role of side kick to Prem Adeeb in the film. A personal opinion, maybe, but I feel I am more impressed by the ‘Kismet’ song in comparison.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

I take this opportunity to wish a very happy republic day to one and all, whereever they are.
