When B R Chopra was making a Muslim social movie during early 1980s, he chose the title “Talaaq Talaaq Talaaq” for it. But he met with opposition from some quarters and as a result, he modified the title to a safe “Nikaah”.

The movie had Raj Babbar, Deepak Parashar and Salma Agha in lead roles with Asrani, Goofi Paintal, Ifthekar etc in it in supporting roles. Salma Agha was a Pakistani actress who was making her debut in Hindi movies and that made her one of the first, if not the first Pakistani actor in several years to do so. I was not aware of this fact then, but I know it now that she had inherited Hindi movie connections from her maternal grandfather. Rafiq Ghaznavi, a music director of Hindi movies during 1940s was his Nana (maternal grandfather). She was also related to Kapoor Khandaan and it was widely believed that her Kapoor Khandan connections helped her land the role in “Nikaah” (1982).

The movie turned out to be a box office hit. The story of the movie and its presentation was nice and that helped the movie draw repeat crowd. I personally watched this movie five times in the movie hall which is an indication of how much I liked the movie.

Music of this movie played a very important role in the success of the movie. Ravi, the permanent music director of B R Chopra movies since 1960s proved his mettle yet again. Ravi was originally under the impression that Salma Agha would lip sync her songs in the voice of a playback singer of his choice. He had accordingly prepared some tunes keeping the voice of Asha Bhonsle in mind. But Salma Agha insisted on singing her own songs and B R Chopra concurred, so Ravi had to change his plan. He had to simplify his tunes in keeping with the limitations of Salma Agha’s voice.

The songs of the movie turned out to be extremely popular. The movie was nominated for Filmfare awards in as many as eleven categories. The movie finally won in just two categories, viz. best female playback singer (Salma Agha for “dil ke armaan aansuon mein bah gaye”) and for best dialogues (for Dr Achla Nagar).

Today (3 april 2014) is the 52nd birth anniversary of Salma Agha (DOB 3 april 1962) which means that she was born on the same day as Jaya Prada.

On this occasion, here is a duet song from “Nikaah” (1982). This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Salma Agha. It is picturised on Raj Babbar and Salma Agha. Hasan Kamal is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi. Like the other songs from the movie, this song too is a lovely song to listen to.

@ Atul ji – lovely post !!
all the songs from this movie were very popular then, they bring
back memories. Specially, ‘fazaa bhi hain jawaan jawaan’ and ‘abhi
alvida na kaho doston’ which i like most.
thanks !!

Like Avinashbhai has said, songs were very popular. Can’t forget Ghulam Ali’s Chupke chupke raat din…..
Thanks Atulji for the post and remembering SA on her 52nd b’day.

salma had a distinct voice. There many people who cannot distinguish Lata to Suman for that any other singer; but the same gentry can recognize her voice aankh band kar ke(I cannot say kaan band kar ke!!!can I???)

thank you Atul
this is one of my favorite song song from Nikaah. then Fazza Bhi Hain Jawaan comes a close second for me.
i didn’t know that i had missed the dead line to send this song…. it was on my wishlist for Salma Agha. actually all three songs viz. Koyal Boli (Sargam) and Shaazmani Shaazmani from “Boxer” and this one were songs that i knew belonged to ASAD
Thank You so much
