The pen that wrote the immensely soothing verses of “Haath Seene Pe Jo Rakh Do To Qaraar Aa Jaaye” (‘Mirza Sahibaan’, 1947), is the same pen that also produced such immensely fun and popular iconic number like “Laara Lappa Laara Lappa Laai Rakhdaa” (‘Ek Thi Ladki’, 1949) with music director Vinod, and such a comely and alluring blockbusters like “Huzoor e Waala, Jo Ho Ijaazat”(‘Ye Raat Phir Na Aayegi’, 1966), created with OP Nayyar.

We are celebrating today, the century milestone of poet Aziz Kashmiri. An exemplary milestone, considering that Aziz Kashmiri Sb could never really break into the A circuit of Hindi film, and that the total of his songs may just be around two hundred or so. Given the sampler above, one can get a measure of the creative capacity of this poet.

In print or on the internet, there is absolutely no personal information available about him. There are articles people have written in his honor, but almost all are simply a commentary on his songs built around the hits created by him. The basic information essentials like key dates and events of his life, do not seem to be available anywhere. Besides some very basic and obvious information elements. Like, his family was originally from Kashmir but was settled in Punjab where he got his basic education. His fascination with creating verses grew in him even as a student. At a very young age, he started writing poetry and started making a name for himself.

His reputation as a young prodigal writer, reached Roop K Shorey, who at that time, used to be a big name in film making in the Lahore center. The year was 1941, and Roop K was preparing for his next film titled ‘Himmat’ (1941). After a brief meeting, Roop K Shorey decided to give this young poet a break. And the young Aziz made his debut with creating 9 songs working with Pt. Gobindram. The song by Satish Batra and Zohra Bai – “Nai Dilli Ke Meethe Ber, Hamaara Jiyaa Beron Mein”, turned out to be one of the most popular songs of that year.

After a smattering of assignments, averaging one a year, came 1946 and with it came five releases. He continued to be a regular writer for Roop K Shorey’s films, and with the late 1940s, came the association with music director Vinod. The “Lara Lappa” from ‘Ek Thi Ladki’ became an instant hit. But despite the popularity of his songs, no substantial work easily came his way. Films with his songs during the decade of 1950s number less than 15, with notables like ‘Dholak’ (1951) to his credit.

The decade of 1960s is the best period of his career. Destiny brought him together with music director OP Nayyar, and together they created some truly magical and delightful songs with film like ‘Ye Raat Phir Na Aayegi’ (1966) – “Har Ek Tukda Mere Dil Ka Deta Hai Duhaai” , ‘Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aayengi’ (1966) – “Koi Keh De Keh De Keh De Zamaane Se Jaa Ke” , ‘CID 909’ (1967) – “Dhadka To Hoga Dil Zaroor” , ‘Naseehat’ (1967) – “Zaraa Dekhiye Meri Saadgi Mein Wafaa Ke Naam Pe Lut Gayaa”, ‘Shreeman ji’ (1968) – “Kaho Shreeman ji” and “Iss Duniya Mein Pyaare Do Kaam Karna” , ‘Kahin Din Kahin Raat’ (1968) – “O Yaaron Ki Tamanna Hai”.

With the advent of 1970s, as the star of OP Nayyar started to fade away, Aziz Kashmiri also moved to the sidelines and quietly dropped out of sight. It is a sad commentary that there is no information available about his later years spent in anonymity. In a recorded career that lasted from 1941 to 1974, he has written songs for about 52 Hindi films, and about a dozen Punjabi films like ‘Chaman’, ‘Guddi’, Billo’, ‘Madaari’ etc.

For the century celebration of this talented poet, I present a song from the film ‘Naseeb’ from 1945. The singing voices are Khan Mastana and Hamida Bano, and the music composition is by Pt. Gobindram. The film is directed by Vedi, for Silver Films banner of Bombay. The star cast includes Pramila, Kumar, David, Krishna Kant, Sunetra, Zillo, Nazma, Leela Mishra, Chandabai, Mune Agha, Agha Jaan, and Ghori etc. The nine songs in this film are shared between Aziz Kashmiri, Ishwar Chandra Kapoor and Ram Murti.

A pleasing and meaningful number, sung by two hearts expressing their determination for love. And a grand salute to Aziz Kashmiri Sb, for logging 100 songs on this blog. Enjoy.

Sudhir ji,
Thanks for your informative article on Aziz Kashmiri.
Aziz Kashmiri was one of those people who stuck to losing propsitions in their career, thereby, inspite of talent ,could never be counted amongst the A class.
He was one of the many, who shifted to Bombay, along with Roop k Shorey, after he migrated to India after Partition.Aziz, continued with him and also Vinod-both never made it to fame and glory.
In later period, when O P Nayyar was on his downhill road,Aziz joined him,a bit too late for both.
According to one source Aziz Kasmiri wrote 276 songs,in all,in Hindi alone.
