Today’s song is from Border (1997) the war film based on the ’71 Indo-Pak war. It was by J.P.Dutta who up until then had made a few Rajasthan based stories— Ghulami, Yateem, Hathyar, Batwara, Kshatriya etc. Them he made 3 movies based on the life of those who live in the Indo Pak border —Border, Refugee & LOC Kargil. This shows his general fascination for the desert and some love for the Indo Pak relation. His movies have always had songs which decry the border drawn between the 2 countries.

Actually the movie shows a scene wherein a soldier is reading out a letter from his son where the son has asked the father-“Ladaai kyon hoti hai? Jab ke udhar bhi humare jaise log hain?” (Why do we have wars when the local people on both sides of the border are similar in habits and culture?)- This could be the meaning of the query. During the course of the movie one of the heroes also say that we don’t go out of our way to usurp other’s territory but we are not good for nothing children who cannot protect our own mother land ?. What nationalist rationalist and peace- loving thoughts.

But I have chosen to present this song as it is Independence eve here in India but Pakistan which got freedom along with us in the middle of the night of 14th and 15th august is celebrating their Independence Day today. So here is wishing all our friends across the border a Very Happy Independence day.
The song was written by Jaaved Akhtar and Music was Anu Maalik. And Anu Maalik has this penchant of coming up with wonderful numbers. The song has playback by Sonu Nigam

Lyrics

Jung toh chand roz hoti hai

ye kehte hain
Is sarhad par phunkaarega
kab tak nafrat ka ye azgar

J P Dutta is from Rajasthan, and hence his fascination with the desert.

And his brother Deepak was the squadron leader in Indian Air Force and died on duty (1971 bangladesh war) and hence his fascination with Indo-Pak war movies. All his movies are dedicated to the memory of his brother, including his first movie Sarhad with Vinod Khanna which was never completed.

Happy Independence day to all…!!!

The singer is Hariharan and not Sonu Nigam
