Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 7
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

(1974 – Solo)

This is turning out to be a very endearing and a very wonderful revisit to the songs that used to be ‘by heart’ in the school days and radio listening days. I have somewhere the notebooks stashed away, in which I and my sister used to pencil in these songs. Even Atul ji has acknowledged it. In a personal response in email, he mentioned that these are the songs that he had written in his notebook, next to cricket scores of important test matches. 🙂 These songs from the 1970s, generally introduced to our nascent minds and memories over the radio, are some of the dearest treasures ensconced in our hearts. In most cases, the familiarity was just with the song, without any details of films and other credits. That information would come later. First, it was simply the song that made its way inside and has simply been there since.

The film is ‘Aalingan’ from 1974. A lesser known film of the era, only gets identified with surprise, because of its songs. The solo by Manna Dey – “Pyaas Thi Phir Bhi Taqaaza Na Kiya” and the duet in the voice of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle – “Hamaare Dil Ko Tumne Dil Banaa Diyaa” , are the two songs from this film that are already posted here. The mention of the songs and the association with this film raises a bit of surprise in the mind. And then, this solo by Rafi Sb from the film. Lovely lyrical poetry expressing such a simple request to the beloved – ‘Please stay, do not go’, is from the pen of Jaan Nissar Akhtar. And the music – yes you may have already caught on to the name of Jaidev by now. The lyrics, the melody and the singing voice, have come together to create such a sublime listening experience.

On screen, the song is performed by Romesh Sharma, who is trying to woo a somewhat offended Zahira. The entreaties of the gentleman are directed towards the lady, in an effort to change her mood of displeasure, and make her stay for some more time. I strongly believe that we owe a lot to the 78 rpm format. This format put a physical time constraint on how much time a song would take to complete. And so, the song, the message in the song, the performance that had to be achieved, and any action that needed to happen related to the purpose of the song – all these things had to be completed within this limited duration of the song. The 78 rpm record dictated this to be three minutes and some seconds. And thus was laid the guidelines, for all the above actions. I remember a comment made in jest once, many many years ago. ‘Bataaiye ke aap ke mehbooba naraaz ho to usey manaane mein kitna time lagegaa.’ (‘Tell, how much time it would take to please your offended beloved’). And the answer is – ‘teen minute – jitni der ek gaana sunaane mein lagti hai’ (three minutes, the time it takes to present a song). And a wonder it is – three minutes of serenading is enough to repair the mood of your better half. Blessings to the inventor of the 78 rpm format. 🙂 🙂

Yes, agreed that the 78 rpm format was phased out by end 1960s, start of 1970s. But effect of the duration standard kind of still lingers on. And so, Romesh Sharma takes a little more than three minutes to please a ‘naaraaz’ Zahira, who is seen stomping out of the door at the beginning of the song. By the end of the song, she is leisurely ensconced in the arms of Romesh Sharma.

Note: my personal experience in similar situations has not been a happy one. Actually the irritation and vexation increased because I chose to sing a song, instead of doing something that was really demanded by the other party. The song did not last for more than a few seconds. 😀 :D.

Apart from that, the magic of the song is simply charming. Simple words, lovely composition and a hearty and a persistent rendition.

Listen and enjoy.

Song-Is tarah jaao nahin (Aalingan)(1974) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Jaan Nisaar Akhtar, MD-Jaidev

Lyrics

is tarah jaao nahin
jaao nahin
jaao nahin
is tarah jaao nahin
is tarah jaao nahin
jaao nahin
jaao nahin
is tarah jaao nahin
is tarah jaao nahin

thehro thehro to zaraa
yoon na ho jaao khafaa
khoobsoorat hi sahi
rooth jaane ki adaa
thehro thehro to zaraa
yoon na ho jaao khafaa
khoobsoorat hi sahi
rooth jaane ki adaa
maine socha bhi na thhaa
maan jaaogi buraa
phool jo tumko diye
kaun sa jurm kiya
phool to mast bahaaron ki nishaani thehre
phool to mast bahaaron ki nishaani thehre
roop ki rang ki khusboo ki kahaani thehre
in ko thukraao nahin
in ko thukraao nahin
jaao nahin
jaao nahin
is tarah jaao nahin
is tarah jaao nahin
jaao nahin
jaao nahin
is tarah jaao nahin
is tarah jaao nahin

tum haseen aur jawaan
dil ko le jaaun kahaan
husn se pyaar mujhe
husn ho chaahe jahaan
tum haseen aur jawaan
dil ko le jaaun kahaan
husn se pyaar mujhe
husn ho chaahe jahaan
padh sako kaash kabhi
meri aankhon ki zubaan
dekho dekho to sahi
kitna rangeen hai samaa
ruk gayin tum to samaa aur nikhar jaayega
tum na thehrogi to har khwaab bikhar jaayega
aise tadpaao nahin
aise tadpaao nahin
jaao nahin
jaao nahin
is tarah jaao nahin

Wah, Sudhir ji!
You have reminded me of my habit of noting down favourite songs in a notebook like every other teenager listening to the radio in the 60s.
Beautiful lyrics by Jan Nisar Akhtar, a legacy carried forward by his illustrious son, Javed Akhtar.
And composition by Jaidev, Sone pe sohaga.
