I have been discussing the songs of “Kashinath”(1943) for the last few days. Full and accurate information about the songs of this movie are not available. When I searched for information about the movie and its songs online, I found that the information was grossly incorrect vis a vis name of singers, names of actors playing various roles in the movie etc.

I found that the full movie was available online, so I watched the full movie yesterday night. Sitting through an entire movie is something I am no longer capable of doing, but I managed to do it for this movie. With that, now I am in a position to give an accurate and detailed account of the movie. When I watched the movie and compared the details of the movie with what is available online (in IMDB, YT etc), I was aghast at the extent of incorrect information that is available in these “authentic” sites. Here are the details of the movie:

The movie opens with Nayeb Ghoshal (Puttan) talking to Kashinath (Asit Baran), Kamala (Sunanda Devi), Bindu (Bharati Devi) and Binod (Dilip Bose). They talk about the misunderstanding that had taken place among them which had caused serious damage to them all. And then the movie goes back in flashback and from then on, the whole story takes place in flashback.

Twelve years ago, Kashinath is a young boy (played by Buddhadeb) who is a motherless child. His father, a priest, is not keeping well and he sends his son to perform puja instead of him to the household of Mukherji babu. But before that, he makes Kashinath to promise that he will not eye/steal the properties of others. It is a tough ask for a young boy who enjoys stealing fruits from the trees of others but he gives this promise.

young Bindu (Bijoli), Daughter of Mukherji babu is waiting for the priest to arrive as she does not break her fast until pooja is performed by the priest. While waiting for the priest, she sings the song “beet rahi pooja ki ghadiyaan”, while Kashinath is on his way to her home, resisting the temptation of juicy fruits hanging from trees en route.

Bindu laughs when she finds Kashinath arriving instead of his father. Do you even know how to perform Puja ? She asks. Nevertheless, helped by Bindu, Kashinath does a semblence of Puja and declares that the puja is complete. Then the chidlike instinct takes over and Kashinath helps Bindu pluck guavas from village teacher’s garden. He makes sure that it is Bindu who is doing the actual plucking and this, he hopes is enabling him to live up to the promise that he made to his father.

The fruit stealing comes to the notice of the teacher who arrives with his pupils. Kashinath uses the guavas as missiles and hurls them at them. One guava hits the teacher on his face who then goes and complains to Mukherji babu.

After all this is over, Kashinath goes back to his home, only to find that his father had died !

It is arranged by Mukerji babu to send Kashinath to another village where the village Zameendaar Pitambar Chakraborty(Nawab) would bring him up. While leaving, Kashinath promises that he would come back whenever Bindu, his munhboli bahan would need him.

Kashinath goes to Pitambar Chakraborty’s house where he lives with his widowed sister (Manorama, different from the Hindi movie vamp of later years) and his daughter Kamala (Latika Mullick). Pitambar Chakraborty has a look at Kashinath and he takes a liking for him. He confides in Nayab that he considers Kashinath a suitable match for young Kamala. One day, Kashinath releases a “ban ka panchhi” from its cage and he himself goes away, much like that “ban ka panchhi”.

While the zameendaar and his men are desperately searching for Kashinath, Kamala sings this song O ban ke panchhi tum kit oar sidhaare.

Kashinath finally gets traced. Zameendaar is extremely angry, but he controls his anger and lets him off scot free by just making him promise that he would not do that again. He then loses no time and gets Kashinath married off to Kamala.

Cut to many years later. Kashinath has grown up (Asit Baran) as has Kamala (Sunanda Devi). Zameendaar has willed his property equally in the names of Kashinath and Kamala.

One Brahman(Jawed Hussain) angrily arrives at Zameendaar’s doorstep wondering why he has been called. Kashinath hands him over the papers of a plot of land that the zameendaar has donated to him. the Brahman tears up the paper, saying that he has full faith on Zameendaar and Kashinath and he does not need those papers.

Things can not get any better in the lives of Kashinath and Kamala. Kamala’s bua tells Kamala that love without any tiffs is boring. So Kamal sings a lovers’ till song with Kashinath with goes, Lo shuru huyi is baar ham donon mein taqraar.

One day, Kashinath receives a letter. That letter quickly makes him swing into action. He takes Rs 1000/- from Ghoshal and goes away, informing Kamala that he has some urgent work. When Kamala comes to know that he had recieved a letter from someone called Bindu then her suspicions get aroused.

Kashinath reaches Bindu’s place and finds that she (Bharati Devi) and her husband (Dilip Bose) and in bad shape financially as well as physically. Kashinath help them recover and get them settled. Bindu sings this happy song-Mere dukh ki rain kati.

Kashinath goes back happily, singing this song-Ham chale watan ki oar .

When Kashinath goes back, things have changed dramatically there. Zameendar is no more and he finds his wife acting coldly and strangely towards him. He gradually comes to know that he is no longer the owner of half of the property as the will was changed in his absence on the suspicion that he was upto some mischief. A foreign return manager (Nemo) was appointed to look after the property in his absence.

The differences between Kashinath and Kamala grow. The occasion of the first death anniversary of Zameendaar sees this bhajan getting sung on the occasion-Roti vrishbhan kumaari

Misunderstandings and fights take place between Kashinath and Kamala. One day Kashinath comes to know that Bindu needs some more financial assistance. He wants to borrow 500 rupees from the manager but things are no more the same and the manager refuses to give him any money. Kashinath gives Ghoshal babu his ring and asks him to give him Rs 500/- and send that money to Bindu. The manager accuses Ghoshal babu of stealing money and brings it to the notice of Kamala.

The brahman who had received his plot of land but had torn off the papers finds himself served with legal notice that he had not paid taxes on the land of the Zameendaar for the last several years. The Brahman asks Kashinath to give witness in this case on his behalf and Kashinath agrees.

Kamala uses scathing language towards Kashinath telling him that he who is living off her money cannot afford to show the kind of arrogance and righteousness that he displays. He should not be going around telling truth in courts. She asks him to leave the house if he cannot mend his ways. Kashinath asks her to take her words back otherwise their consequences would be bad. She is adamant and she Kashinath leaves the home.

While leaving, he finds Bindu and Binod coming towards him. He tells them that this house was no longer his. The brahman invites them to stay with him.

Kamala tells the Nayab that she did not mean what she said. He heard what she said but he did not notice what she actually meant. She sends this separation song- Manmohan mukhda mod gaye

Kashinath testifies in the case of the Brahmanand decision is given in favour of the Brahman. The manager tells about this to Kamala. Kamala hopes that her defeat in the case may make her win back Kashinath but her confused body language gives the manager an incorrect message that she wants Kashinath to get eliminated.

Manager engages one criminal to eliminate Kashinath. Unaware of this, Kashinath decided to go back to Kamala, singing this song-Main jaan gaya pehchaan gaya. On the way he gets attacked and he is mortally wounded. Manager comes to Kamala and tells her that he has carried out her instruction.

In the hospital, a disoriented Kashinath, mistaking Bindu for Kamala, asks her to come clean that she had no role in this attack. Dilip tells Bindu and she needs to bring Kamala to Kashinath as the last resort. Bindu goes to Kamala and tells her that she was the munhboli sister of Kashinath. Kamala hears all this, while hanging her head in shame. She goes to the hospital and tells him that she was innocent in the case. Kashinath, despite stating that he could now die in peace, survives (wife power) :). The movie ends on a happy note with the duet-Meri bagiya mein kooke koyaliya.

The movie had nine songs in it, as enumerated above. Eight of these songs have been discussed in the past. Here is the ninth and final song from the movie. This song is in fact the first song from the movie which is lip synced by young Bindu (Bijoli) when she is waiting for the priest to arrive.

Here is this song- “Beet rahi pooja ki ghadiyaan”. Singer of this song is not known. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the identity of the singer.

Pt Bhushan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Pankaj Mullick.

With this song, “Kashinath” (1943) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

@ Atul ji – while I congratulate you on covering of all songs of this movie ‘Kashinath-1943’, I salute you again for the efforts taken to get accurate and authentic information about a movie and its songs.
Watching a movie online is something that I would never like to do, because I enjoy watching movies only in theaters or at the most on TV. But, after reading your posts and the efforts you put in for ‘Jeewan Jyoti-1953’, I am inspired to do it if needed. 🙂

Congratulations once again !!!

Atul ji,

I appreciate your tolerance, and patience to sit thru a complete film. These days, though films are available in plenty,I do not have that much patience to sit at one place and watch a film.
More than this, what impresses me is your intense desire to ensure that you give only a genuine info on your Blog and are ready to take up any exercise for that. Great !
Your detailing of the story is so good,I would suggest you to remove the earlier summary of the film given by me and replace it with more accurate one by you.

Your write up is just great. The film synopsis you have given provides us a picture of the old India, revealing a slice of its social and cultural history: how simple vratas used to be observed even by small girls, how household deities were worshipped daily, how much care a religious father took to groom his son professionally, etc. We have read it in the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, but we see that depicted in a movie! We talk of realistic movies now, but how realistc this was sixty years ago! I often feel this site is like an open university: we learn so much besides the songs. Feel very grateful.

Atul-ji,
1. Wonderful write up (and commendable patience!)
2. Does not the opening few bars of the song remind you of “Orpheus in the Underworld” by Offenbach?
