LOST AND FOUND-GEMS FROM UNRELEASED FILMS… Song No. 9
————————————————————-
Today’s song is from the unreleased film, Piyaa-50s, sung by Talat and Nirmala. The Lyricist was Majnoon Lucknowi and the composer was S. Banerjee aka Sushant Banerjee.
From the very first talkie film, songs were included in the film-and naturally too, considering the love of music of Indian audiences. In addition to Gramophone, now people had one more medium for musical entertainment. Those days Gramophone was a luxury and it was owned by very few in the society, whereas films were openly available to everybody in the theatres at a much less cost. So film songs caught on from the beginning.
Initially, the Hindi film music was influenced by Marathi and Parsi Gujarati theatre music as well as classical singing, which did not make the film music very popular with majority of moviegoers on an All India basis. Later on, when this music became public oriented with simpler tunes and hummable lyrics, it picked up signs of popularity. After 1945, it became very popular and stayed that way for another 20 years or so. Every composer tried to give melodious songs. There was a very healthy competition too among them.
These days hardly any songs are made whose tunes linger on in our minds-unlike the older days. Such lingering tunes were made by the famous and also the not so famous composers. While most composer’s names were remembered along with the famous and hit songs, some songs did not remind people of the composers as they were less known. Composer Sushant Banerjee was one such music director who is hard to remember for his songs. Adding further, there is hardly any information available about him.
Sushant Banerjee’s career started with films like “Jungle ki Pukar” and “Kuldeep”-both of 46. His songs in “The Last Message”-49, a film based on Gandhi ji’s teachings were somewhat famous in those days. In “Deewanji”-48, Geeta Roy’s song “Kise apna ghum sunaun” was very good. His two unreleased films,”Monica” and “Piyaa” in the 50s had some good but not very popular songs. Then films like “Harischandra”-58,”Ghar grihasthi”-58 and “Swarg se sundar desh hamara”-59 came and went ,without making much noise. He ended his career with “Matlabi Duniya”-61,in which he gave his best patriotic song- “jai jai Bharat Desh hamara”,sung by Talat and Amirbai.
Actually Sushant Banerjee had used famous and popular singers for his songs, like Talat, Mukesh, Rafi, Shankar Dasgupta, Sailesh Mukherjee, Mohantara Talpade, Asha Bhonsle, Shamshad, Amirbai, Zohrabai, Nirmala, Geeta Roy, Sudha Malhotra etc etc but somehow he failed to create any everlasting melody from his music. One reason could be that he only had one song from Lata Mangeshkar.
Today’s song was sung by Talat and Nirmala as well as by Shankar Dasgupta separately. This singer Nirmala is the same Nirmala Devi who acted and sang since the 40s. She was the wife of yesteryear singer/actor Arun Ahuja and mother of actor Govinda and producer Kirti Kumar. After stopping singing in films, Nirmala had taken up classical and Ghazal singing and had become very popular all over India as Nirmala Devi.
Let us now enjoy this song from unreleased film ‘Piyaa’-50s,sung by Talat Mehmood and Nirmala….

Lyrics
nazar aa
nigaahon se chhup jaane waa aa aa aa aa le
chhupe hain kahin dil mein chhup jaane waale
chhup jaane waale
nazar aa
nigaahon se chhup jaane waale
chhup jaane waale
muhabbat bhare dil ko tadpa rahe hain
khud apni adaaon se sharmaane waale ae
muhabbat bhare dil ko tadpaane waale
chhup jaane waale
nazar aa
nigaahon se chhup jaane waale
chhup jaane waale
wahi apna daaman bacha kar chale hain
bacha kar chale hain
nigaahon se dil mein utar jaane waale
muhabbat bhare dil ko tadpaane waale
chhup jaane waale
nazar aa
nigaahon se chhup jaane waale
chhup jaane waale
kabhi ban ke aansoo
kabhi ban ke aahen
kabhi ban ke aansoo
kabhi ban ke aahen
?? yaad aate hain yaad aane waale
muhabbat bhare dil ko tadpaane waale
muhabbat bhare dil ko tadpaane waale
chhup jaane waale
nazar aa
nigaahon se chhup jaane waale
chhup jaane waale
chhupe hon kahin dil mein
chhup jaane waale
chhup jaane waale
nazar aa
nigaahon se chhup jaane waale
chhup jaane waale
