Today (28 january 2015) is the death anniversary of O P Nayyar (16 january 1926-328 january 2007). As can be seen, O P Nayyar’s birth and death anniversaries fall in the month of January. C Ramchandra (12 january 1918- 5 january 1982) is another music director with both of his anniversaries fall in the month of January.

O P Nayyar has composed some 586 songs in 71 movies. This blog so far has showcased 379 of these songs (some being NFS too) from 64 movies. All songs from as many as 33 of O P Nayyar movies have been covered in the blog.

As can be seen, a little over 200 of O P Nayyar songs still remain to be covered. Though it is no longer first of january now, I just now resolved that I will try and cover the remaining O P Nayyar compositions in one year so that we will have all available O P Nayyar compositions covered in the blog by the time his next anniversaries arrive one year from now. Going by past examples, it can be done. For instance, I had resolved to cover all remaining Suraiyya songs sometime in the previous year and we achieved the target in a few months time. And now 305 Suraiyya songs out of 325 are covered in the blog, with some more lined up to be posted on relevant occasions.

When I began to look at the list of O P Nayyar songs chronologically, I found that “Chham Chhama Chham”(1952) is the oldest movie with O P Nayyar music that still have a few songs left. Eight out of 11 songs from this movie have been covered. I thought of discussing one of the remaining songs from this movie, but I was unable to locate any of these songs.

The next non YIPPEED movie in the blog is “Mangu”(1954). This movie originally had Md Shafi as the music director, but a then struggling O P Nayyar, desperate to land assignments, manage to oust Md Shafi and became the music director of this movie. O P Nayyar composed four songs in this movie. Three of those songs are already covered in the blog

It was in this movie that he utilised the voice of a female playback singer who are also struggling to find her feet in the industry.

No prizes for guessing who this female playback singer was. She was Asha Bhonsle who would become the main and in fact often the only female playback singer of choice for O P Nayyar for close to two decades.

Here is one of the first O P Nayyar-Asha Bhonsle collaboration in Hindi movies. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Dol mere man pyaar se (Mangu)(1954) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

Dol mere man pyaar se
mili nazar dildaar se
yahi hai mauka
yahi hai mauka
khaa nahin dhokha
jeet le baazi haar ke
dol mere man pyaar se
mili nazar dildaar se
yahi hai mauka
khaa nahin dhokha
jeet le baazi haar ke

ho saath bhala(?) na baalam
aata hai kam ye mausam
mausam
ho saath bhala(??) na baalam
aata hai kam ye mausam
kal ki hai naadan kise khabar
tu aaj luta se dil o jigar
nikal ja har aazaar(?) se
mili nazar dildaar se
yahi hai mauka
yahi hai mauka
khaa nahin dhokha
jeet le baazi haar ke

khaamosh nahin reh jaana
ulfat ke naghme gaana
gaana
khaamosh nahin reh jaana
ulfat ke naghme gaana
duniya ki kuchh bhi kahe nazar
insaaf mere dil yeh hai magar
pyaar ka badla pyaar se
mili nazar dildaar se
yahi hai mauka
yahi hai mauka
khaa nahin dhokha
jeet le baazi haar ke

kya duniya kya ye basti
apni to duniya masti
masti
kya duniya kya ye basti
apni to duniya masti
armaanon ki lehren idhar udhar
oye man ki naiyya dagar magar
door chalen is paar se
mili nazar dildaar se
yahi hai mauka
yahi hai mauka
khaa nahin dhokha
jeet le baazi haar ke
dol mere man pyaar se
mili nazar dildaar se
yahi hai mauka
khaa nahin dhokha
jeet le baazi haar ke
