The Voice of Mukesh #66
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The journey following the songs of Mukesh now enters 1955.  As we come into the time period of mid fifties and later, we are going to find more and more songs being already posted.  The songs that are remaining now are the ones which mostly are obscure, and less heard earlier.  But there is fun in filling the gaps.  And if this song is something to go by, it is a lots and lots of fun.

As I started to explore the 1955 list of Mukesh songs, I came to this song first.  It has captured me immediately, with a surprising gasp of delight.  It is songs like this that make this journey and this exploration worth its while.  A song that I have some memories of having heard long back, maybe on just a couple of occasions.  Then it was lost under crowd of the more familiar sounds.  Running into this song today is such an “Aah Haa” experience.  As I said, makes the effort worth its while.  An absolutely delightful composition – light, simple words, and very, very hummable.  And the voice of Mukesh adds the soulful depth that has the unmatchable capacity to enhance the flavors and the feelings a thousand times.

The film is ‘Ghar Ghar Mein Diwali’ which is produced under the banner of Minerva Movietone, the flagship company of Sohrab Modi.  The film is directed by Gajanan Jaagirdar.  The cast of actors is led by Sajjan and Shyama, and includes Gajanan Jagirdar himself, Manorama, Aruch Tarapur, Krishna Kant, Maqbool, Dar Kashmiri, Ramlal, Shaamlal, Jamshed Ji, Shivaji Rathor, Khwaja Sabir, Meenu, Mehmood, Ghulam Mohiuddin, Rajkumar, Qader, Munshi Khanjar, Jilani, Uma Dutt, Bagla, Bhaagi, Jameela, Sinha, Uma, Baby Kala etc.  Interesting to note that even in 1955, Jeevan was still using the name ‘Dar Kashmiri’.  As we scan the Geet Kosh, we find that he was using both names simultaneously, till as late as 1957-58.

The ten songs of this film are all from the pen of Prem Dhawan, except one which is written by Indeewar. The music is by Roshan.  Going by the list of actors, this song in all likelihood would have been picturized on Sajjan.  And from the tone and the rhythm, one can associate a horse being ridden as this song plays. In the absence of the video, I am not sure if I should tag it as a ‘horseback’ song or a ‘tonga’ song, so I have left out that categorization.

Decidedly an expression of a young man’s heart that seems to have just been smitten by a damsel’s glances.  The heart seems to be lost, not being able to decide whether it should remain where it is, or should it fly off to the one that has beckoned it with a promising gaze.  All the gentleman can say is

aadhe udhar hain
aur aadhe idhar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar

An extremely rare and obscure delight, pure delight.  Listen and enjoy.

Song – Aadhe Udhar Hain Aur Aadhe Idhar (Ghar Ghar Mein Diwali) (1955) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Prem Dhawan, MD – Roshan

Lyrics

aadhe udhar hain
aur aadhe idhar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar
un ko khabar hai
na hum ko khabar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar
aadhe udhar hain
aur aadhe idhar

zulfon ki galiyon mein khoye kabhi
hain palkon ki chhaaon main soye kabhi
zulfon mein galiyon mein khoye kabhi
hain palkon ki chhaaon main soye kabhi
dhhondhe to dhoondhe dil ko kahaan
oo oo
dhhondhe to dhoondhe dil ko kahaan
ke aisi lagi hai kisi ki nazar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar
aadhe udhar hain
aur aadhe idhar

unki nazar ka ishaara mila
kuchh apne junoon ka sahaara mila
unki nazar ka ishaara mila
kuchh apne junoon ka sahaara mila
kehte huye ye miyaan majnoo chale
ho oo
kehte huye ye miyaan majnoo chale
ke jab se mili hai nazar se nazar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar
un ko khabar hai
na hum ko khabar
ye hazrat e dil hain na jaane kidhar

The beginning of this song very much similar to this duet from Malhar again by Roshan.

Maheshji,
It has uncanny resemblance. Smart thinking. Thanks
