The Wonderful Sounds of 1930s – 8

An absolute gem.  A duet song from 1938 about which almost no information is available.  Just that the film is ‘Baanke Saanwariya’ and the name of the music director is  Damodar Sharma.  I even checked the actual 78 rpm record of this song, which is available with my friend.  Even the names of the singers is not mentioned.

Geet Kosh does not add more information about the song.  The film is directed by Nanubhai B Vakil for the banner India Liberty.  Cast of actors is listed as Vatsala Kumthekar, Bose, Ganpat, Ali, Shankar Mirajkar, Mansoor, Naveen Chandra, Yasmin, Bheem, and Maruti Rao.  And that’s it.

A lover’s duet, that ensconces within itself priceless nuggets of life’s philosophy.

le lo jo maze lene hain
din beet rahe hain
yaad aayega phir baithe huye
guzraa zamaana

So the only thing to do is to listen to this wonderful duet, and enjoy it.

Song – Haaye Tera Dil Le Ke Phir Aankhon Ka Churaana (Baanke Saanwariyaa) (1938) Singers – Dilaawar, Vatsala Kumthekar, Lyrics – [Unattributed], MD – Damodar Sharma

Lyrics

haaye tera dil le ke phir

haaye tera dil le ke phir
aankhon ka churaana
jaan lega meri jaan tera
chhod ke jaana
haaye tera dil le ke phir
aankhon ka churaana

o bekhabare. . .
o bekhabare sun to sahi
mera fasaana. . .
kya dard bhara raag hai
kya dard bhara raag hai
ulfat ka taraana
kya dard bhara raag hai
ulfat ka taraana

aaa aaa
haaye tera dil le ke phir
aankhon ka churaana

do din ki jawaani hai
nahin is ka thikaana
do din ki jawaani hai
nahin is ka thikaana
rehne ka sadaa ek nahin
rehne ka sadaa ek nahin
jaane zamaana
aaa haan
rehne ka sadaa ek nahin
jaane zamaana
haan haan
haaye tera dil le ke phir
aankhon ka churaana

le lo jo maze. . .
le lo jo maze lene hain
din beet rahe hain
yaad aayega phir baithe huye
yaad aayega phir baithe huye
guzraa zamaana

aaa haan
haaye tera dil le ke phir
aankhon ka churaana

आss आsss

Sudhirji,
This is a great discovery. Thanks a lot. Did you notice this ghazal follows what seems to have become a stock tune in Raga Darbari, probably starting from Begum Akhtar’s Deewana banana hai to deewana bana de and Mukhtar Begum’s Chori kahi khule na from Aurat Ka Pyar (1933)? Many sources attribute Begum Akhtar’s ghazal to 1925. If you believe in the other version that she sang it to raise funds for Bihar earthquake (1934), Mukhtar Begum’s ghazal predates it.

AK

Sudhir ji,
What a rare find!
Yes, it does appear to have the same tune as ‘Deewana banana hai …’.
But AK Sir, I mostly humbly submit that it is quite often that many ghazals have resembling tunes; the reason (as you are yourself well aware) being their being based on the same ‘bahar’ (बहर).
What a pity we are not sure about the identity of the singers.
Avadh Lal

Sudhir ji,

Damodar Sharma was a famous and noted composer of the 30s and 40s,though his name is not known to many.
He started composing music from the film ‘Baghdad ka chor-1934’and went to compose music for more than 40 films upto ‘Jadui chitra’-1948.
After this he fell ill and lost contact with the industry. When he came back,he did not get any films and he did work as assistant to many other composers, notably A.R.Qureshi.

Dear Arun ji, AK ji, Avadh Lal ji,

Thanks for your appreciative comments. Yes, this song is really a great find. And let me tell you an interesting follow up. I have received two emails and one phone call, from our circle of friends and readers, and they say they are curiously and eagerly waiting if I could upload the song on the other side of this record. 🙂 🙂 I will try to do it asap.

Also, I got a call from Girdharilal ji today morning about this song. He informs that the names of the singers are Vatsala Kumthekar and Dilaawar. I am updating the post with this information.

Arun ji,
Thanks for a brief introduction to Shri Damodar Sharma, the music director of this song.

AK ji,
Given that the year of birth of Begum Akhtar is 1914, she would be just 11 years old if her ghazal was recorded in 1925. I am not saying that it is impossible; just that it seems unlikely.

As Avadh Lal ji has pointed out, it is not uncommon that ghazals of similar meter may be composed using the same raag, and hence will sound similar.

Thanks and regards
Sudhir

Just a guess based on voice matching. The second voice seems to be that of Vatsala Kumthekar.

Oh! Just noticed the tagging of the singers; names for the song.
