Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Teri Chaahat Mein Balam

On this blog, we have discussed often about the confusion in data and information related to films, songs and artists.  Across the various sites online, and even in print sources, there is so much misinformation floating around that it is really difficult to now have a trust on any one source.  The subject of this post is one such case in example.

Today, 12th June, is the birthday celebration for actress Shyama.  Greetings and many happy returns of the day to this vivacious and attractive leading lady of 1950s and 60s.

Now about the conflicting information that I mentioned above.  Originally, the anniversary list on our blog included the entry for Shyama’s birthday for 7th June. This is also the date that is posted on the Wikipedia.  I started to prepare this post.  In the process I referred to an article on her in the book “Beete Kal Ke Sitaare” by Shri Shriram Tamrakar.  The article states her date of birth as 12th July.  I was a little surprised, and immediately wrote an email to Arun ji and Atul ji.  Arun ji responded first.  He checked a few sources and then sent me the following message, “According to the book “Star portraits” by Harish Booch and Karing Doyle,in 1962 at Bombay, the actress Shyama was born as Khursheed Akhtar, at Lahore on 7-6-1935”. But then within half an hour he sent me another message, “,In another book, ‘Stars of the Indian screen’ By Baburao patel,1952,  the DOB is given as 12-7-1933.”  Now we have two different dates from different sources.

Then I sent another email to Harish ji Raghuvanshi, requesting for confirmation.  His response came back in a couple of hours, and it said, “Shyama (Khurshid Akhtar) born at Lahore on 12-06-1935, confirmed in book ‘Who Is Who – The Indian Film Directory’ published in the year 1957.”  Now I had a third date.  I immediately informed Arun ji and Atul ji, and we agreed to go ahead with this date.  Atul ji then updated the Anniversary Page with this information received from Harish ji.

I thought we had laid to rest this issue.  But I was in for another surprise, which may or may not have any significant impact.  As I restarted work on this post today, I was checking online for more articles on Shyama.  I discovered another blog page here, which carries multiple items collated together.  One of the items contained on this page, close the bottom, is a news item from Times of India, which is datelined 8th January, 2008.  This news item reports that actress Shyama had celebrated her 72nd birthday on the ‘previous Sunday’. As I checked the calendar, it turns out that the Sunday previous to the date of the news item is 6th January, 2008. Going by the dateline of the news item, it would appear that her date of birth should be 6th January.

Now this may or may not have any significance.  The news item lacks specific information.  The statement that she celebrated her birthday on 6th Jan, could also imply that she may have hosted an overdue party at her residence for her birthday, which may have been earlier. The article mentions this to be the 72nd birthday party. Given that all sources agree on the year of birth as 1935, it is possible that this party is most likely an overdue party for an event from 2007 (which would be 72 years from 1935).  With all the above inputs available, I am going ahead with the post for Shyama ji’s birthday today, as per the information provided by Harish ji.

(The link for the page is here. This is a collation of multiple items, and this news item appears near the bottom of the page, one before the last item.)

The song selected for today’s post is from the 1952 film ‘Shrimati ji’.  After having seen her perform impish and fast paced song items like “Lipstick Lagaane Waale Dil Ko Jalaane Waale” and “Ae Baabu O Baau Ji Main Na Karoon Teri Naukri” from this same film, it is a change to see her perform another dance item in a more sober tone.  Apparently, this song is in the latter part of the film.  Nasir Khan and Shyama are dressed in tribal attire, and they seem to be on a sabotage mission against some enemy army camp.  The tone of the song and their body language, indicates that between the two of them, things are not all good, and there is a sadness in the voice and in the eyes of Shyama as she performs this song, ostensibly to distract the attention of the enemy army men, while Nasir Khan is probably setting up some explosives etc.

The film is from the banner of ‘Filmistan’ and is directed by IS Johar.  The star cast is Nasir Khan, Shyama, Ram Singh, Murad, Samson, Vimla, Indira, Baldev Mehta, Ram Avtar, Yashwant, Mirazkar, Agha Miraz, Majnu, Johar, Prabha.  There are ten songs in this film, seven of which are already present on this blog.  The songs are written by three lyricists – Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra.  This song is by Shailendra. Also, the music compositions are by three music directors – Jimmy, Basant Prakash and S Mohinder, this song coming from the baton of Jimmy.  The singing voice is that of Geeta Dutt.

Shyama ji is 80 this birthday.  There have been guarded references to health problems, and the difficult situation that she stays alone.  We hope and pray that she has more comfort and good health in her life.  All the best wishes to her.

Sudhirji Good article on Shyama I have TOI Dated Aug 27 2006 Kahan gaye Woh Log ‘ Shyama has been written along with a host of other stars alive then Would like to quote the concluding part of the same
‘No Iam not a Dukhiyari as i sound;Iam pretty excited about the way life has shaped up for me.Iam happy with my children and Grand children. They are my world.I have nothing to complain about

Dear Sundeep ji,

Welcome to the blog. If I am not mistaken, this is your first comment posted here. I am glad to see you here.

Thanks for the update and inputs. The journalists in their zeal for the sensational, many times forget that even celebrities are human beings, and as such, they should also be accorded respect for their private spaces. I have come across more ‘not-so-happy’ details that people have written about her, but have chosen not to include them.

There is another more detailed article that I had posted, goodness, three years ago. Please see this link,

Thanks and regards
Sudhir

Sudhir ji,
Really a painstaking thorough research (So, what’s new? You do it all the time.)
Thank you very much for this write-up on Shyama, who sure has been one of the personal favourite artists. For me, her name brings to the mind the picture of her vivacious personality singing the immortal song: ‘Ai dil mujhe bata de tu kis pe aa gaya hai’, trying to seduce Dadamoni Ashok Kumar in “Bhai Bhai”.
I respect your judgment about her disputed date of birth and take that to be final. But shouldn’t one have gone with the date mentioned in the earliest recorded date in the 1952 book; that too by a most respected authority – no less than Mr. Baburao Patel?
There must have been some reason for the later writers, viz., Shri Shriram Tamrakar, Harish Buch (Booch?) and Karing Doyle and compilers of “Who Is Who – The Indian Film Directory”, for mentioning different dates. Have they quoted any sources for their records or given any reasons for ignoring Babubhai Patel?
This is of pure academic interest. I may again clear that my intention is not to challenge the judgment of respected seniors. I am just being curious.
Once again thanks & regards,
Avadh Lal

Dear Avadh Lal ji,

Your observations are timely, as well as appropriate. Even though I have gone ahead and uploaded this post, as it was prepared for some time now, in the background, I am in continuing conversation with Harish ji to try and get further confirmations.

Hope to soon bring an update to this matter.

Rgds
Sudhir
