This song is a special search request from a dear friend Arvinder ji Sharma.  Regular team members would have noticed this name being appended to the email ‘To’ list in recent email exchanges.  I got introduced to him, at first through our mutual friend Zafar Bhai, and then once again the threads met thanks to AK ji (of SOY) when he invited us for a get together.

That his name is included in the list of team members is a clear indication that he is also smitten by the same virus as the rest of us – a passionate love for the Hindi film song.  Arvinder ji is Delhi based.   He manages his own business of dry fruits, in Delhi 6, very close to Ballimaraan, the place that we had recently discussed in the post for the song “Kajraare Kajraare”. 🙂

About couple of weeks ago, he mentioned to me that he has been searching for an Asha ji song from the 1963 film Zarak Khan.  He has checked with many friends in his circle, including Zafar Bhai, without success.  As a next step, he was checking with me.  I had promised him that I will check and get back to him.  I was able to locate the song, but it still has taken me good ten days to pull it out, upload it then bring the post to the blog.

Listening to it, you will also understand the reason why Arvinder ji is pining to listen to this song again.  It is such beautiful melody.  It is creations like this that makes us feel blessed that we are living through times when such music is still available.  And yes, we have friends like Arvinder ji to point us to such hidden gems that will simply bring a wow to your lips when you hear it.

‘Zarak Khan’ is a production from Shanti Niketan Films, Bombay, directed by Harbans.  The star cast includes Jairaj, Chitra, Sheila, Harman, Baby Fareeda, Tiwari, Kumud Tripathi, Naazi, Wazir Muhammad Khan, Ravi Khanna, Ravikant, Shivji, Rafia, Madhumati, and Sujata amongst others.

The film has six songs, five written by Anand Bakshi and one by Saba Rampuri. This one is written by Anand Bakshi.  Music is by S Mohinder.  And the voice of Asha ji – my words will not do any justice, you have to listen.

And enjoy this obscure but an extraordinary gem.

Song – Shaam Ki Tanhaaiyaan Hain (Zarak Khan) (1963) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Anand Bakshi, MD – S Mohinder

Lyrics

shaam ki tanhaaiyaan hain
pyaar ki angdaaiyaan hain
aise mein tu aa jaa sanam
shaam ki tanhaaiyaan hain

ye sitaare ye nazaare
poochhte hain baar baar
chaand nikla raat aayi
kyun na aaya tera pyaar
kyun na aaya tera pyaar
ye teri rusvaaiyaan hain
aise mein tu aa jaa sanam
shaam ki tanhaaiyaan hain

chaandni se keh raha hai
chaand apne dil ka raaz
rut haseen hai
tu nahin hai
kaun chhede dil ka saaz
kaun chhede dil ka saaz
mumtazir shehnaaiyaan hain
aise mein tu aa jaa sanam
aise mein tu aa jaa sanam
shaam ki tanhaaiyaan hain

jal uthi hai har shama aur
jugnu parwaane baney
bulbulon ke geet sun ke
phool deewaane baney
phool deewaane baney
ishq ki parchaaiyaan hain
aise mein tu aa jaa sanam
aise mein tu aa jaa sanam
shaam ki tanhaaiyaan hain

Hindi script lyrics (Provided by Sudhir)
———————————————————

And why not!
What a mellifluous composition from S. Mohinder. Very high quality lyrics by Anand Bakshi and the lilting voice of Asha ji have made this melody truly heavenly.
Thanks a lot Sudhir ji for this number. Grateful to Aravinder ji, but for whose request, we would have been unable to enjoy this beauty.
Regards,
Avadh Lal

Thanks Avadh Lal ji,
for your kind words.

Unheard melody. Now made available to all. The tune seems very familiar, though I can’t pinpoint Shades of. “Dil ne chheda hai taranaa Jab se Dekha aapko” duet by Talat and Asha from “Sipah Salar”.

Seshadri ji,

I checked the song you have mentioned above. Yes, the compositions sound very similar.
You have a good memory connect. 🙂

Dear Sudhir Kapur Ji,
First of all, many thanks for this upload and mentioning my name.
The honor of being your friend is entirely mine, i can only say.
I am thankful to Zafar Shah of Shah Music Centre, who introduced me to you, and AK Ji as well, who has been a gracious host at his luncheon musical meets where I had the opportunity to meet you again.
I consider myself lucky enough to be a part of your music friends’ circle, which is full of charming, gracious and loving people.
My musical contributions will not cease with this song, this I can assure you.
Thanks once again,
Regards,
Arvinder.

Dear Arvinder ji,

Welcome. 🙂

And yes, look forward to more active participation by yourself.

Is this song mentioned in the geet kosh?

Sam ji,

Yes, this song is very much listed in Geet Kosh. It has lead in couplet, which is not present in the record version posted here.

The Geet Kosh entry reads
“Nazar Ne Intzaare-Yaar Mein Dhokhe Bade Khaaye…Shaam Ki Tanhaaiyan Hain Pyar Ki Angdaaiyan…”

Thanks for this great song. But an equally great, if not better, song by Asha is “O nirmohi” from the movie Haveli. MDs are Sapan-Jagmohan. Please try to find this one. Thanks.
