Today (18 july 2015) is the third death anniversary of Rajesh Khanna ( 29 december 1942- 18 july 2012). People who only read about his superstardom in article and who did not live through that era will not be able to understand what that meant. The entire India was head over heels in love with Rajesh Khanna from late 1960s to early 1970s. Like all good things, it was too good to last forever, though. Rajesh Khanna was not able to handle his superstardom and he began to alienate those who had helped him reach the top. The same people who helped him reach the top began to desert him in favour of the next superstar in the making, viz Amitabh Bachchan, who was better equipped to handle his superstardom.

When Rajesh Khanna tried to make amends and stage a comeback in late 1970s, it was too late by then. Many of the movies that he worked in in his post superstardom era where qualitatively better that the movies of his superstardom era, but that did not matter at the box office, because his mass following had deserted him in favour of the next superstar. So though Rajesh Khanna earned critical acclaim for his later movies, big commercial success at the box office by and large eluded him.

“Tinku”(1977) is a Rajesh Khanna movie that I had never heard of till now. It turns out that “Tinku”(1977) was directed by Parvez for Naveen Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Master Tinku, Bindu, Om Shivpuri, Alka, Dhumal, Jaya Kaushalya, Keshto Mukherji, Jagdeep, Leela Mishra, Raza Murad, Mukri, Birbal, Sudhir, Dilip Dutt, Roopesh Kumar etc. The movie also had some big names as guest artists. They included names like Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Vinod Mehra, Rehana Sultan, Om Prakash and Rajesh Khanna.

Here is a nice song from “Tinku”(1977). This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and it is lip synced on screen by Rajesh Khanna who plays a Pathan called Sher Khan in the picturisation of this song. The picturisation also shows Master Tinku and others, Om Shivpuri is shows trying to shoot Rajesh Khanna, (or is it Master Tinku ? ) throughout the duration of the song.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Prakashchandra informs that this movie was produced by Laxmikant Pyarelal to introduce Laxmikant’s son (Master Tinku). The credits appearing onscreen in fact described him as “Introducing sensation Child star Tinku”. 🙂

HFGK entry mentions this song as sung by Kishore Kumar and Roopesh Kumar, but one cannot detect Roopesh Kumar’s voice in the song. It is a KIshore Kumar solo song for all practical purposes who has sung this song with gusto.

how did i miss this post on july 18th!!! such a lovely song ! having all elements of Rajesh Khanna- Kishore Kumar in it. so full of life 🙂
the last time i have heard of “Tinku” was in the song from “Ek Duje Ke liye” … and answer to Atulji’s doubt is that Om Shivpuri was targeting the kid.
Thank You PCji for this beauty of a song
