Aisi lagan lagaa

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a contributor to this blog. This article is meant to be posted in atulsongaday.me. After film music became popular among the masses, Non film songs were relegated to the background. They not only became difficult to locate, but also became unknown for the newer generation. Compared to the fast, foot tapping songs of today, NFS were very slow and poetic. In most of the NFS ( except a few Jagmohan songs),the use of orchestra was not even worth a mention. Hardly 2-3 instruments were used in most of these songs.

This was because the lyrics of the geet were very meaningful and the style of singing was so captivating that the excessive use of instruments was intentionally avoided to give expression to the voice and the lyrics. In today’s songs, the loud orchestra music drowns the singer’s voice and what to write about their lyrics…. they are so prosaic that to call them songs is to do injustice of true songs.( example-Aati kya khandala ). Music has become an ‘use and throw’ item. Even the recent Hit songs are forgotten within a few months as soon as another hit song comes on the scene. Of course sometimes some good songs are do come up – but they are more like oasis in a vast desert.

The old NFS are still remembered because the generation which enjoyed them first hand is still alive. May be, once the people born in the 40s and 50s fade out, these old NFS will become Antiques and will beforgotten. I have travelled very wide-within and outside India, but very rarely I found any young man in his 20s or 30s, who likes old film songs or old NFS of yore. I do not blame them because no efforts have been made to inculcate in them the liking for vintage music. Surprisingly, I found that in Europe and USA, the 40s, 50s and the 60s Western songs are still very popular and have considerable sales and patronage among all ages ! Our readers from abroad can express their opinions on this.

After NFS started getting posted on this Blog, about 166 Non Film Songs, sung by 56 singers have been discussed ( without counting Saigal songs). Among these 56 singers,of course most songs are sung by regular and well known singers like Lata, Asha, Rafi, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Geeta etc etc . However, there are a few well researched Non film songs by lesser known artists as well, viz. Abhram Bhagat, Master Vasant Amrit, Tamancha Jaan, Habib Wali Mohd., Malika Pukhraj, Kumar Gandharva, Vidyanath Seth, A H Mohd. Hussain and Shanti Hiranand.

I think that the kind of service this Blog is doing to Indian Music must be unparallelled on Internet. I do not know of any other Blog or site where so much of variety of Film and Non Film songs is available at one place. Truly, my hats Off to shri ATUL ji, who is doing an Yeoman’s service to Music lovers all over the world. (This Blog is read in 198 countries of the world.)

Films and Literature giants have an old connection, but in NFS too this link can be found. Amongst the composers who did NFS on well known writers’ works are few. The name of Jaidev stands very tall among them. Jaidev provided quality music not only for his film songs, but also for Non Film Songs too. Harivanshrai Bachchan’s “Madhushala” was done by him. Poetic verses from ‘Chhayawadi’ poets like Jaishankar Prasad and Mahadevi Verma, as well as several Meera Bhajans like ‘aali re meri maina’, ‘Phagun ke din char’, ‘bana le Nandlala’, and ‘Aisi lagan lagay’ were composed by Jaidev.

Asha Bhonsle and Jaidev together have done some exceptional NFS from the works of Jigar Muradabadi, Phani Badayuni, Narendra Sharma etc. Ramprasad Bismil’s ‘Sarfaroshi ki tamanna’ is done by this duo. Not just Asha ,but others like Lata,Chhaaya Ganguli, Chandan Das, Pinaz Masani and Hariharan too have sung Jaidev’s NFS compositions.

Jaidev was so much involved in NFS work, that his last composition in his life too was a NFS Ghazal by Firaq Gorakhpuri.

Today we will enjoy a Meera Bhajan, sung by Asha Bhonsle. Music by jaidev. According to experts, whom I asked, this song is in mixed Raagas, involving mainly Nat Bihag. Experts from among our readers can give their views.

Only Vidhur Suri is an exception who at such a young age has such vast knowledge who could put many of us to shame. I am sure he is an avid fan of NFS too.
