Today’s song is a special song-for me, because it is not only composed by one of my favourite composers, but it is also sung by him, as a duet with Shamshad Begum, in the film Hamaari Shaan-1951. Chitragupta is the composer / singer of this song.

In my opinion, out of all the composers ( including my favourite C. Ramchandra), these were the only 4 composers, whose compositions, I personally found very melodious in about 90% times. This is a very high percentage for melody, which not every composer can boast of ! These composers are….

Composer period of activity Total films Total songs average films/year
Hansraj Behl (19-11-1916 to 20-5-1985) 1946-1979 71 530 2
Khemchand Prakash(12-12-1907 to 10-8-1950) 1939-1950 46 437 4
Chitragupta (16-11-1917 to 14-1-1991) 1946-1988 148 1028 3
Ravi (3-3-1926 to 7-6-2012 ) 1955-1990 111 792 3

Composer Ravi was an assistant to Chitragupta in his early days. Both Chitragupta and Ravi also sang songs in Hindi films and in each other’s films as well. Chitragupta sang 28 songs in 15 films and Ravi sang 21 songs in 18 films. Additionally Ravi was also a Lyricist and wrote about 66 songs in 21 films.

Sometimes I wonder whether singers sang the best when singing for their favourite composers ? Just see the kind of singing Mukesh did for Shankar-jaikishen, Lata did for C.Ramchandra (during 1949-1958), Kishore did for S D Burman, Rafi for Naushad, Talat for Anil Biswas or Asha for first O P Nayyar and then R D Burman.

Lata was also very close to Chitragupta. Actually they had a small group, consisting of Prem Dhawan, Dilip Dholakia, Lata and Chitragupta. After every song recording, they all used to go to Chitragupta’s house in Khar and have a Bihari Lunch there. Lata was very fond of Bihari food. ( I too like Bihari Sattu ki poori and Aaloo ki sabji ). They used to go to Picnics also.

Film Hamaari Shaan-51 was produced by Nanabhai Bhatt and directed by his elder brother Balwat Bhatt. The early 50s was a period when many films used the theme of importance of Joint families or maintaining the old family traditions. The partition had practically broken many joint families and the family system in india was going through an upheaval, what with formation of smaller units of families in metropolitan towns, due to scarcity of space and increasing inflation. Elders in the society wanted old values to be nurtured further, but the whole system seemed to be heading for a transformation into nuclear family system-out of sheer necessity. If a family had 4 brothers, the parents would be with only one family, thus depriving 3 families of building values in the younger generations. The film industry was trying to re establish these but to no avail. Film Hamari shaan also was woven around such a theme.

The film was directed by the elder brother of Nanabhai Bhatt- Balwant Bhatt. He was born at Porbandar, Gujarat on 13-1-1909. Balwant started his career by assisting Naval Gandhi in 1930-31 and then N.B.Vakil at Sagar Studios in 1932. He turned Director with the advent of Talkie films and joined Prakash Pictures with Actress-1934. His first film was Chalta purja-1932 and the last one was Nagin aur Sapera-1966. He directed 34 films, mostly stunt and C grade films. He directed some Gujarati films like Sansar Leela, Seth Sagsha, Diwadandi,Snehlata etc. He was the producer of Dillagi-1942, Gunehgar, Alif Laila etc. Diwadandi-1950 became famous for its song-” Taari aankhni afini”, sung by Dilip Dholakia with music by Ajit Merchant. His film Mordhwaj-52 was the Debut film for Music Director Narayan Dutt. Balwant Bhatt died on 7-2-1965, at Bombay.

There were 8 songs in “Hamaari Shaan”(1951), sung by 7 singers and written by 4 Lyricists. 5 songs are already posted and today’s song is the 6th song from this movie. The cast of the film was Durga Khote, Yaqub, Agha, David, Umakant, S.Nazir, Yashodhara katju, S N Tripathi, Bharat Bhushan, Veera, Meera etc etc. The story of the film was….

HAMARI SHAAN-1951 was a Deepak Pictures’ film.Produced by Nanabhai Bhatt,it was directed by Balwant Bhatt. The story/s-play/dialogues were byPt.Girish.MD was Chitragupta and Lyricists were Anjum Jaipuri,RMAKhan,S.K.Deepak and B.D.(Bhagwat datt)Mishra.

In a certain village in UP,a joint family of panditji resides. Panditji alias Harprasad, his wife Ganga, three children, their wives and an unmarried daughter Kumud who is engaged to Satish,s/o/ Damadi lal,who is stingy like his name.

Gopal is their neighbour. Hs sister kala’s marriage is broken as they can not give dowry of 2000 rupees. Kala tries suicide. Panditji not only saves her, but also gives Rs 2000- and gets her married. Gopal thus becomes his trusted assistant for ever.

One day Panditji dies while saving Damadilal from goons’ attack. His family gets fragmented with all brothers dividing property, but no one is ready to give 5000/- dowry for sister’s marriage. Gopal convinces Satish and he marries Kumud, without dowry, secretly. Damadilal, his father comes there, with Pistol to stop the marriage.

In the ensuing fight Gopal is killed accidentally by Damadilal’s gun. Damadilal repents, blesses the couple, gives all property to them and goes on a Teerthyatra.

The brothers also unite once again.

Here is this song from “Hamaari Shaan”(1951) which is sung by Shamshad Begam, Chitragupta and chorus. B D Mishra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.
