Today’s song is a special song for several reasons. The first reason is that with this song posted today, film Memsaahib-56 completes all the songs on this Blog. Secondly This song is shot on Meena Kumari,who, for a change,can be seen in a very jolly,smiling and joyous mood. She is also in western outfits. This is a film,before she put on lot of weight at wrong places, and to hide it, she was always dressed in sarees with long sleeve blouses. The third and most important reason is, this film song video shows many pets,like Cats, Dogs and Birds. I am sure, Atul ji will like this song very much. Meena Kumari is probably celebrating the birthday of one of her pets. This is also one of the rare films of composer Madan Mohan,in which almost all songs had become popular.

Film Memsaahib-56 was produced and directed by R C Talwar. Madan Mohan was the music director and the cast was Meena Kumari, Kishore Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Gyani, Kumkum, Shivraj etc. This was a wonderful comedy film.

Raghubir Chand Talwar was born on 21-4-1910, at Tolaganj,in Western Punjab-now in Pakistan. His film life, like many others of his ilk, started in Calcutta and ended in Bombay. He was a screen play writer, producer and Director. Starting from Manchali-43, produced by Talwar Productions, Calcutta, which he had established there, Talwar directed films like Albeli, Khiladi, Sangdil, Ilzam, Rukhsana, Memsahib, Ek dil sau afsane and Naya Kanoon-1965. He produced two films,Sangdil and memsahib-for which he had written the screen play also.

Talwar directed Kishore Kumar in 3 films, Ilzam,Rukhsana and Mmemsahib. In all these films,Meena Kumari was the Heroine. While Ilzam was a social film, Rukhsana was a Costume film and Memsahib was supposed to be a comedy film. This was also produced by him.

After the film Memsahib was completed, Talwar had to pay a balance amount of Rs.8000 to Kishore Kumar. Even after several reminders by Kishore Kumar, Talwar failed to pay Kishore his dues. Kishore Kumar employed a novel idea. Everyday, in the morning, before proceeding for any shooting, Kishore would go to Talwar’s house. Standing outside at his gate, Kishore used to shout loudly,” Hey Talwar, de de mera Aath Hazaar “. This continued for a few days and Talwar was so much annoyeded that he paid off Kishore’s dues.

Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari were branded as Tragedy king and Tragedy queen respectively. Dilip had almost developed a habit of dying in every film that he acted in. The producers and distributors insisted that he ‘dies’ in their film. This mental stress caused lot of psychological problems for Dilip and he was driven to Depressions. Psychiatrists advised him a change of genres of films and accordingly he acted in Azaad, Kohinoor, Naya Daur, Ram aur shyam etc. That cured from his psychological conditions brought about by his tragic roles.

Meena Kumari, of course became a Tragedy Queen much later. A series of films like Ek hi Rasta, Bhabhi ki chudiyan, Aarti, Main chup rahoongi, Sahib,bibi aur Ghulam, and Dil ek mandir saw Meena Kumari shedding copious amounts of tears and the audience was convinced that to suffer was her ordained destiny. She was declared Tragedy Queen unanimously. Noted film Historian Bhavna Somayya says,”She used to look beautiful even when crying and even more importantly, could effectively deliver her dialogues with tears rolling down her cheeks.”

But the truth is, whenever required or given a chance, she was more than capable of excelling in romantic and effervescent roles, including comic roles. Those of you who have seen her opposite Dilip Kumar in Azaad and Kohinoor,or opposite Kishore Kumar in Mem Saahib or Shararat, or opposite Dev Anand in as early a film as Tamasha-52 or in Miss Mary, she was irresistible in happy roles too.

Unfortunately, all this comic talent washed away in films of 1960, 61 and 62 continuously. In 1962 Meena Kumari was the only actress to get nominated for the Best Actress Award of Film fare, for all three films. This is a record unbroken till today. All these 3 films – Aarti, Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam and main Chup Rahungi- confirmed her status as the undisputed Tragedy Queenof HFM!

Besides her riveting face, her knowledge of Urdu and Poetry, together with intelligence was another asset for her. She was so good in acting that many leading actors were wary of her intellectual high ground and often found reasons for refusing films with her. She acted in only 10 films in all with the Top 3 actors-Dilip, Dev and Raj,out of her 94 films. The rest were with lesser Heroes. She acted in 8 films with Pradeep Kumar. She had started her career with Mythological and Fantasy films till she got film Baiju Bawra, when it was refused by Nargis( on Raj Kapoor’s instructions). This changed her luck and catapulted her to A grade status overnight.

She was lucky to get the right directors. Another factor was, almost every film that she acted had a musical score that became popular, like Baiju Bawra, Parineeta, Aazaad, Ek hi Rasta, Yahudi, Savera, Kohinoor, Dil apna aur preet paraayee, Bhabhi ki choodiyan, Sahib bibi aur Ghulam, Aarti, Dil ek mandir, Saanjh aur savera, Chitralekha, Bheegi raat, Bahu begum and many many more films.

Pakiza was her last triumph. It was first planned in 1958, then partially shot in 1964 and after her split with Amrohi,the film was shelved. once Sunil Dutt and Nargis saw some footage of the film and persuaded the separated couple to complete the film. An emotional meeting took place wherein Amrohi gave a Gold Guinee to Meena Kumari as a token payment and promised her that he will ensure that she will look as beautiful in the film as the day the film was conceived first.

Despite the tragic life and tragic end, Meena Kumari films, particularly the comedy ones will give pleasure to the lovers of good cinema.

MEM SAHIB-1956 was one of those rare films which had music by Madan Mohan but was also a popular movie and a box office success.In this film MM gave only one song to Kishore Kumar-Dil dil se milakar dekho,a tune clearly inspired by ” Isle of capri” which was a raging hit in India in those days.
The story of Memsahib was one which appealed to the audience and Kishore Kumar’s films in those days were very popular anyway.

Meena(Meena Kumari) is a rich girl living with her guardians-Chacha(Gyani ji) and Chachi(Munna bai).She is ultra modern and hip hop cultured.When the question of her marriage comes up,she gives an ad in the local paper and after taking interviews of the suitors,selects Manohar(Shammi kapoor) who is also of modern culture.When Manohar is presented to her Chacha-Chachi,they remind her that her marriage was fixed with Sunder(Kishore kumar) by her parents, before they died in an accident,she scoffs.

Sunder is brought up in the most traditional ways and presently is with his Guruji(Shivraj) in the Gurukul.Soon he completes his education and lands in Meena’s house with a long beard and hair.She totally refuses to marry him.After some time,Sunder decides to change himself as Manohar,i.e. an ultra-modern young man.Though difficult and funny he manages the change.he finds that Meena is impressed and changing slowly,so he takes her to his Father Jugal Kishor ji(Radheshyam) and Mother(Protima devi).

It seems Meena has not changed but wants to teach these ‘old-fashioned people a lesson and show them what a modern life is. Instead, Meena in reality, gets changed herself to traditional ways and realises how Indian culture is superior to western culture.

This theme was later used in some more films too, a notable and famous film being Manoj Kumar’s Purab aur Paschim-1970.

Congratulations Deshmukh Saheb-Atul ji on covering all songs of ‘Mem Sahib-1956’ and its joining to the ‘list of movies-all songs covered’ 🙂
For almost whole the day I browsed the blog for several reasons, but didn’t noticed this ‘Yippee’ moment, and when Aparna ji mentioned the film’s name for the Yippee project in the afternoon, then also it didn’t click to me.
But, thanks to Aparna ji, now I get the message correctly and can post my comments (and surprised though, no Yippee comments till …) 🙂
