Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 3
———————————————————

The first time I heard the name of the film ‘Prarthana’ (1943) was sometime in 2012 when I wrote a short write-up on Jahanara Kajjan, singer-actor of 30s and 40s, for the Blog with her song tumre darshan ka nainaa taras gaye re in Raag Gaud. Since then, the only additional information I could get about this film was that it was a social genre film. The film’s VCD/DVD is not available.

The film was produced under the banner of Minerva Movietone and was directed by Sarvottam Badami. The star cast included Motilal, Sabita Devi, Jahanara Kajjan, Nimbalkar, Menaka, K N Singh, Ghulam Hussain, Sadat Ali, Abubakar, Mehboob, Shorey, Jeelani etc. The film had 10 songs, all penned by Dr Safdar Aah Sitapuri who was also the story and dialogue writer. The music was composed by Saraswati Devi.

An interesting feature of all the ten songs was that they were all composed in 10 different Hindustani classical raags. Five of these songs were rendered by Jahanara Kajjan. As mentioned earlier, I have already given a short profile of Jahanara Kajjan in my article referred to above, supplemented by the comments made therein by Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh. If Zubeida was the heroine of the first talkie film ‘Alaam Ara’ (1931) produced by Imperial Film Company, Bombay (Mumbai), Jahanara Kajjan was the heroine of the second talkie film Shirin-Farhad (1931) produced by Madan Theatres, Calcutta (Kolkata). Later she worked in Madan Theatres’ ‘Indra Sabha'”(1932) which had 71 songs, the highest numbers so far in one movie. Apparently, Jahanara Kajjan must have sung a good number of songs in this film.

Music Director Saraswati Devi (Real name : Khursheed Manchersher Minocher-Homji) had a flair for the use of Hindustani classical raags in her composition of film songs which was understandable. She was trained in Hindustani classical music under the guidance of the Dhrupad specialist Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. She was also the alumni of Morris College, Lucknow

With music as her specialised subject. She worked with Bombay Talkies as music director during 1935-41. After the death of Himanshu Rai in 1940, there was an exodus of artists from Bombay Talkies including Saraswati Devi. ‘Prarthana’ (1943) was one of 6 films for which she composed songs for Minerva Movietone.

I have been searching for some rare songs on the websites for the last few days. In that process, I came across MP3 clip of the song ‘kaahe neha lagaaye sajaniya’ sung by Jahanara Kajjan from the film PRARTHANA (1943). From the wording of the song, I guessed that the song may be a raaga based Dadra. And it was indeed so except that it was not sung in a traditional style. This song has mesmerised me for the last couple of days.

Despite using multiple combination of searches, I have not been able to locate the audio clip of the song on YT. I have, therefore, converted the MP3 clip downloaded from Surjit Singh ji’s website into an audio clip.

Enjoy listening to Jahanara Kajjan’s voice in Raag Piloo and also the excellent dholak played by the percussionist.
