Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 8
———————————————————

ROOP REKHA (1948) was a film that I was not aware of until I heard mp3 clip of a song from the film. An advertisement of the film which appeared in one of the issues of ‘Filmindia’ 1948 revealed that the film was produced by Padam Maheshwari under the banner of Chitrakala Mandir and it was directed by Samar Guha. Veena Kohli and Rehan, probably new comers, were in the lead role supported by Asha Poshley, Smriti Biswas, Durga Mota, Ajmal, G N Butt etc. I have no idea as to which genre the film belonged to but going by another advertisement of the film which says ‘Burning Punjab brings out the challenge picture of 1948’, the story appears to be based on the social impact on Punjab immediately after the partition.

The film had 10 songs written by 3 lyricists – Preetam Ziyai (7), Devraj Dinesh (2) and Harikrishna Premi (1). The film’s advertisement has named ‘the late Pandit Amarnath’ as music director. In a subsequent advertisement, the name of Robi Roy (Ravi Roy Chowdhury) has been added. As per http://www.sdbatish.com, songs were composed by 4 music directors – Pandit Amarnath, Robi Roy, S D Batish and Vidyanath Seth. The prefix ‘late’ to Pandit Amarnath in the film’s advertisement indicates that Pandit Amarnath expired during the making of the film.

An interesting thing about the film’s music was that of the 10 songs, as many as 5 songs had been sung by Vidyanath Seth, who had been mainly known for his non-filmy Hindi and Punjabi ghazals and devotional songs. As far as I know, this was the only Hindi film in which he gave playback.

Vidyanath Seth (27/02/1916 – 15/06/2015) started as a singer in All India Radio, Lahore in 1936. His private ghazals, devotional songs and other light classical songs were very popular. However, singing was not his main activity. He was an LIC agent in Lahore and he continued in this job even after migrating to Delhi in 1947 until his retirement. Almost all 78 RPM records of his non-film songs were issued prior to 1950. In India, he had sung songs on almost all the stations of Akashwani. He had the distinction of singing at the inaugural functions of All India Radio in Lahore and thereafter in Jallundhar and also at the Delhi Centre of Doordarshan in 1956. Vidyanath Seth left for his heavenly abode on 15 June 2015 at a ripe age of 99. I have seen his interview uploaded on YT which was taken just 6 month before his death. He looked hale and hearty with a good memory of his past.

I am presenting the only song from the film ROOP REKHA (1948) that I could trace in Dr Surjit Singh’s website. The song is ‘aaj geet ke bol bol mein umda hai toofaan’ sung by Vidyanath Seth. The song is written by Harikrishna Premi and is composed by Pandit Amarnath.

The song appears to have been written in the background of communal riots in Punjab following the partition.

With this song, the film ‘Roop Rekha’ (1948) makes its debut in the Blog.

Song-Aaj geet ke bol bol mein umda hai toofaan (Roop Rekha)(1948) Singer-Vidyanath Seth, Lyrics-Harikrishna Premi, MD-Pt Amarnath

Lyrics

aaj geet ke bol bol mein umda hai toofaan
geet ke
aaj geet ke bol bol mein umda hai toofaan
badal daalega abhi jahaan
badal daalega abhi jahaan
geet ke
aaj geet ke bol bol mein umda hai toofaan

kavi ki aankhen dekh rahi hain maanav ki barbaadi
aaj lutaa insaan
lut gayi haaye uski aazaadi
insaanon ki zinda laashon par basti aabaadi
insaanon ki zinda laashon par basti aabaadi
phoonk raha hai ae ae
phoonk raha hai kavi laashon mein
aaj naye hi praan
naye hi praan
geet ke
aaj geet ke bol bol mein umda hai toofaan

aahon se kavi kehta hai
ab aandhi ban kar aao
aao
khaamoshi se kehta hai
kavi geet kraanti ke gaao
gaao
baandh rakha jin zanzeeron ne
unko tod giraao
baandh rakha jin zanzeeron ne
unko tod giraao
kadke bijleee ee ee
bankar kadke ae ae
kadke bijlee ee ee
bankar kadke ae ae
ab bebus insaan
ab bebus insaan
geet ke
aaj geet ke bol bol mein umda hai toofaan
badal daalega abhi jahaan
badal daalega abhi jahaan
geet ke
aaj geet ke bol bol mein umda hai toofaan

phoolon ke praanon mein ab to dahak uthe angaare
jhulas jaayen jinki jwaala se aasmaan ke taare
iss jwaala se janam janam ki kavi ki pyaas bujha re
iss jwaala se janam janam ki kavi ki pyaas bujha re
apni kismat aap banaa tu u
apni kismat aap banaa tu u
kuchh bankar bhagwaan
kuchh bankar bhagwaan
geet ke
aaj geet ke bol bol mein umda hai toofaan
badal daalega abhi jahaan
badal daalega abhi jahaan
geet ke
aaj geet ke bol bol mein umda hai toofaa..aan
