“Kohra”(1964) was directed by Biren Nag. This movie was a Hindi adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s “Rebecca”(1938), or more accurately it was an Hindi adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca”(1940) based on the novel of Daphne Du Maurier.

“Kohra”(1940) had Biswajeet, Waheeda Rehman, Lalita Pawar, Madan Puri, Badri Prasad, Asit Sen, Tarun, Manmohan Krishna, Abhi Bhattacharya etc in it.

Though songs in Hindi movies often come in the way of good storyline, the songs of the movie helped enhance the suspense of the movie.

Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. And all these songs have gone on to become immortal songs in the annals of Hindi movies.

The last song from “Kohra”(1964) was discussed in april 2010, more than half a decade earlier !

Here is the fifth and final song from “Kohra” (1964). Unlike the other four soongs from the movie, this song is lesser known, and in fact an obscure song. I had never heard this song till now and this song was not even available to YT so far. The video of this song does not seem to be available. Perhaps this song was excluded from the movie. If that was the case then one supposes that the editor of the movie felt that this song was coming in the way of the storyline.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mahendra Kapoor alongwith male and female chorus. Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hemant Kumar.

There are several words in the song (especially those sung by chorus) that are not clear. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections wherever applicable.

With this song, “Kohra”(1964) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Lyrics (Provided by Nitin Shah)

kaahe bajaai toone paapi bansuriya
tann mein lagi chingaari re ae ae
gori suratiya tori
jiya lalchaaye
maare nazariya kataari re ae

?? jhanananana

chhanke jawaniya
jhanke painjaniyaan(?) jhananana

bholi dulhaniya boley
kaahe tu sataaye
balma jaa jaa jaa
o sajna jaa jaa jaa
tann mein bijuria doley raha nahin jaaye
gori aa aa aa
o chhori aa aa aa

balma ja sajna ja
balma ja ja ja

nanha sa jiya mora piya ghabraaye re
kaahe bajaai toone paapi bansuriya
tann mein lagi chingaari re ae

gori suratiya tori
jiya lalchaaye
maare nazariya kataari re ae

chamkai nathuniya baaje painjaniya chhanananana
dhaani odhaniya udti naaginiya phanananana

saath bazariya tore kabahoon na jaibe
raaja na na na
o chaila na na na
chunari udhaibe tauka jhulni dilaibe raani
haan haan haan
o jaani haan haan haan

raaja na na na
o chhaila na na na

baali umariya mori
kahaan liye jaaye re
kaahe bajaai toone paapi bansuriya
tann mein lagi chingaari re ae ae

gori sooratiya tori jiya lalchaaye
maare nazariya kataari re
