Missing Films of 1960s – 14
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
With this post, I return to one of the requests of Arvinder ji that has been pending for some time now. His reminders keep coming to me, and there are more pending requests from him lined up in my inbox.
This song can well be the continuation of the ‘Memory Ticklers’ series. A lilting melody that was often heard on the radio when I used to regularly listen, and then later it seemed to have faded from the memories. Depend on Arvinder ji to recall and remind to dig up such gems to once again be played and listened.
But I am including it in the this series of the missing films of 1960s. The project homework assigned to me by Khyati Behn is simply not moving as fast as I want it to move, and of course, moving much slower than how Khyati ji would want this to move. But I am at it, and I have a long list of songs lined up in this series, yet to be posted.
In that context, I want to write today, about another thing. Last week, I was in Indore for one day, to attend some business meetings. The meetings that were planned to last the entire working day, actually got done by late afternoon. The return flight being much later in the evening, I had a few hours in hand. I sent a text message to Bakshish ji, requesting him to send me the contact information of one of the premier records collector of India, Shri Suman Chaurasiya, based in Indore. As soon as I got the response, I got in touch with Chaurasiya ji, and we decided we could meet right away.
I reached his home in Pigdambar area towards the south of Indore city. The home has a huge image of a 78 rpm record next to the entrance door. And above the entrance door, in large letters is written – ‘Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Gramophone Records Museum’. He took me to the first floor of his house. The entire floor is a huge hall which is lined on all the walls with wooden shelves that extend from floor to the ceiling. And these are chock full of 78 rpm records, EPs and LPs. He says that he has well over 28,000 records in his collection. His collection covers almost the entire history of the gramophone records in India, starting from the early 1900s to the present. Of course his own interest and liking is upto the 1980s, but his collection continues to grow with every passing year. His preference is the 78 rpm records, and that form the major part of his collection.
I spent a good three hours at his place, looking at this collection, and comparing notes on the song lists of the 1930s and 1960s. In this exercise, I was able to identify a few more missing films from the 1960s, for which I am still trying to trace the songs. He was gracious to immediately make copies of songs from such films, from the digitized versions from his computer. So I must say that I came back from his place, richer with some more missing songs that he shared with me. As and when I come to those films and songs, I will identify them.
He also gave me some books that have been published under the name of the museum. One of the books is titled ‘Lata Samagra’, and supposedly contains the list of all Lata songs from 1942 to 2014. I have browsed through this list, and then had subsequent exchange on this topic with Bakshish ji and Arvinder ji. Based on this compilation, the total songs recorded by Lata ji is somewhere the range of 6500. This includes all the Hindi films songs, all the non films songs and all the songs which are in languages other than Hindi. As I write this post, the book is not handy with me, but I will give more details in a subsequent post. And also write about some of the other books that I got from him.
This request from Arvinder ji is a lovely forgotten melody from the 1966 film ‘Naujawaan’, which makes its debut on the blog today. One of the best songs sung by Usha Mangeshkar ji. The words are written by Anjaan, and the lilting music comes from the mind of GS Kohli. I request other friends and readers to please add more information about this song and this film.
Listen to and enjoy, another memory tickler makes its place on our blog today.
Song – Arre Chal Arre Hatt Kaahe Chhede Natkhat (Naujawaan) (1966) Singer – Usha Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Anjaan, MD – GS Kohli
Lyrics
arre chal
arre hut
kaahe chhede natkhat
main to mar gayi sainyyaan
haaye chhod de bainyyaan
julmi tu lega meri ja. .an
le ke rahega meri jaan
arre chal
arre hut
kaahe chhede natkhat
main to mar gayi sainyyaan
haaye chhod de bainyyaan
julmi tu lega meri jaan
le ke rahega meri jaan
chaunk padun jab
oo oo oooo oo
chaunk padun jab khanke kangnaa
dil dhak se reh jaaye
baali umar mori
thar thar kaanpe
saamne jab tu aaye. .ey. .ey
kitna sataaye beimaan
le ke rahega meri jaan
tu kya jaane. .ey. .ey. .ey. .ey
tu kya jaane dushman duniya
kya kya baat banaaye
main mar jaaun
laaj ki maari
laaj na tujhko aaye. .ey. .ey
kehna kabhi to mera maan
le ke rahega meri jaan
arre chal
arre hut
kaahe chhede natkhat
main to mar gayi sainyyaan
haaye chhod de bainyyaan
julmi tu lega meri jaan
le ke rahega meri jaan
arre chal
arre hut
kaahe chhede natkhat
main to mar gayi sainyyaan
haaye chhod de bainyyaan
julmi tu lega meri jaan
le ke rahega meri jaan

ओ ओ ओsss ओ

Also, the song is started with introductory lines something like
tu harjaaee, dil tera chhaliyaa, pyar hai tera farzi
o main sab jaanu mere sajnaa, kya hai teri marzi…

Sudhirbhai,
I came to know about the book ‘Lata – Samagra’ through our ‘Sargam’ club and called Shri Sumanbhai, He immediately mailed the volume and gave me a discount of Rs. 300/ too. I have Viswas Nerurkar’s ‘Lata- Gandhar’ but it has songs up to 1989 and Hindi Film Songs only, unlike ‘Samagra’ which has entire collection upto 2014 !!
I am happy you could visit ‘The Lata Pratisthan’ personally and had good talk with Shri Sumanbhai. (Little envious too)
