It has been full three years almost to the day, that the last song of this music director was posted here on this blog. After three long years, we have another post with a song composed by this maverick composer whose quality of music is exemplary, but the quality of his social interface left a lot to be desired. Uncompromising to the last, he managed to do a lot less work, than he could have. A tale of regrets all the way, for himself, and for his fans – that we were bereft of more of his creativity.

Remembering Sajjaad Husain on the anniversary of his birth today (15th June).

Before today’s post, we have 82 songs by him showcased on our blog. Given that he composed for about 18 to 20 films only, it leaves out just a handful of more songs that may be traceable – a number that can be counted on fingers of just one hand. Many of his creations are traceable and available. Sadly, for his very first film, ‘Gaali’ (1944), in which he shared the music director’s responsibility with Pt Hanuman Prasad, the songs of the movie are not all published on 78 rpms. What is traceable are two physical records (GE 3392 and GE 3393), meaning 4 songs. And incidentally, all four available songs are composed by Pt Hanuman Prasad. Not even one (of the three songs attributed to him) are traceable on 78 rpm records.

The 1947 film ‘Qasam’, produced under the banner of Prem Pictures, Bombay, is directed by MD Beg. The star cast of the film includes Prem Adeeb, Najma, Raj Adeeb, Shashi, Saabir, Kanta Devi, Amir Bano, Bhim ji, GH Khan, Anooprani, Jamu Patel, Ruby Aaran and Tangwar Husain Lakhnavi. The Geet Kosh lists 10 songs for this film. As per the data available, eight of these songs were published on four 78 rpm records. All of them are not yet traceable in public domain. On our blog, we have so far posted three songs of this film. Today, we add one more song of this film to our blog. Once again, these finds are as rare as they can be.

The Geet Kosh lists names of two lyricists who have shared the song writing work between them – Anjum Pilibhiti and Hamid Hyderabadi. Although the lyricist name is available for most songs, it is not available for two of the songs. Today’s song is one of them.

As far as singing credits are concerned, Geet Kosh does not list the names of the singers. For the available songs, the singer names assignments are most likely based on the information on the gramophone record itself. The three songs which are already posted are all solo songs in the voice of Geeta Roy (later Geeta Dutt). Today’s song is a duet, and the names of singers are GM Durrani and Geet Roy, as indicated by the source from whom I got this song. As far as my judgment goes, the singer names are correct. However, I will request other friends and readers with keener ears, to please confirm or comment on this.

The song is a verbal skirmish between a husband and a wife. It is really a fun song to hear – it contains all the cliché phrases that one may use, when there is a fighting argument. The husband is sounding apologetic, and the wife, clearly the winner is this verbal combat, appears to be very, very upset with her spouse. She calls him a ‘बुद्धू’ and a ‘देहाती’, and tells him to ‘बंद करो अपनी चोंच’ and stop the needless ‘टैं टैं’. She also tells him that she is not afraid of him; maybe she is small as an ant (‘चीउंटी’), but she is more than a match for him (referring to him as ‘हाथी’), clearly threatening to bring about the traditional outcome of this confrontation. 🙂

I will stop talking about the song, and let you listen to this wonderful staccato composition – each line sounding almost like a quick short punch. And think of the master composer, and his crafty innovations of music.

Enjoy this bout. 🙂

Song – Kya Hum Se Hui Hai Aisi Khata (Qasam) (1947) Singers – GM Durrani, Geeta Roy, Lyrics – [Unattributed], MD – Sajjaad Husain
Lyrics

kya hum se hui
kya hum se hui hai aisi khata
jo tigni ki naach nachaati ho
jo tigni ki naach nachaati ho
jo tigni ki naach nachaati ho

nakhre ka masaala daal ke tum
kyon khichdi ka khichda banaati ho
kyon khichdi ka khichda banaati ho
kyon khichdi ka khichda banaati ho
kya hum se hui

jab saamne aate ho mere
jab saamne aate ho mere
karte ho ye bak bak jhak jhak
bak bak jhak jhak
bas door raho mere munh na lago
bas door raho mere munh na lago
tum buddhu ho dehati ho
tum buddhu ho dehati ho
kya hum se hui

ghar waale hazaaron keh daalen
ghar waale hazaaron keh daalen
lekin na kisi se kuchh bhi kaho
par hum jo kahen
par hum jo kahen to chik chik chik
par hum jo kahen to chik chik chik
chik jaati ho chik jaati ho
chik jaati ho chik jaati ho
kya hum se hui

is chonch ko apni band kar lo
is chonch ko apni band kar lo
bekaar ki karte ho taen taen
is chonch ko apne band kar lo
bekaar ki karte ho taen taen
wo aankh milaayega hum se
wo aankh milaayega hum se
jiski ke sawa gaj chhaati ho
jiski ke sawa gaj chhaati ho
kya hum se hui

kya hum se hui hai aisi khata
jo tigni ki naach nachaati ho
jo tigni ki naach nachaati ho
jo tigni ki naach nachaati ho
kya hum se hui

ik hum hain ke aahen bhar bhar ke
ik hum hain ke aahen bhar bhar ke
intzaar ki chhat pe phirte hain
intzaar ki chhat pe phirte hain
ik tum ho ke gusse se tan kar
ik tum ho ke gusse se tan kar
bekaar ki nasen phulaati ho
bekaar ki nasen phulaati ho
kya hum se hui

ye aankh kise dikhlaate ho
ye aankh kise dikhlaate ho
ye bandar bhabhki aur ko do
kyon tumse darey jo chewnti ho
kyon tumse darey jo chewnti ho
aur us ke liye tum haathi ho
kya hum se hui

kya hum se hui hai aisi khata
jo tigni ki naach nachaati ho
jo tigni ki naach nachaati ho
jo tigni ki naach nachaati ho
kya hum se hui

Sudhirbhai,
I am not much doubtful about Geeta’s voice but am not able to identify the male voice as Durrani’s voice. My credentials are:
1. I am Durrani’s fan listening and even singing his songs from my very childhood.
2. I somehow, could identify the way he sings with the right ‘murquees’ at certain places. (Sorry, I am not able to describe clearly, what I want to convey. I wish, I had the neck of writing like yours.)
