In the 1930s and 1940s, there was a producer and director by the name of Kikubhai Desai. He had produced and directed many mythological films in the silent era. With the advent of talkies in 1931, Kikubhai Desai switched over to talkies. His expertise lay in producing talkies of stunt, costume and magical genres. He also directed a few of these films produced by him under these genres. Some of the films he produced under the banner of Paramount Pictures were ‘Chalta Purza’ (1934), ‘Khooni Kanjhar’ (1935), ’Jaadui Danda’ (1935), ‘Burkhawali’ (1936), ‘Guru Ghantal’ (1937), ‘Alladdin Aur Jaadui Chiraag’ (1938), ‘Aflatoon Aurat’ (1940) etc. These films were meant for mass entertainment only. The films were produced at his own Paramount Studio, now known as Filmalaya Studio.

In the early 40s, Kikubhai Desai floated one more banner ‘Great India Pictures’ under which he started producing only socially relevant films meant both for the masses and the intellectuals. He produced under this banner two films – ‘Sneh Bandhan’ (1940) and ‘Akela’ (1941).
Unfortunately, his untimely death in 1941 at the age of 39 led to the closure of his production companies. His two sons – Subhash Desai and Manmohan Desai resumed his legacy of producing and directing the films from the 50s and under their own banners.

AKELA (1941) was produced by Kikubhai Desai under the banner of Great India Pictures and was directed by Pesi Karani. The star cast included Mazhar Khan, Bibbo, E Billimoria, Miss Moti, Pratima Devi, Bose, Mohammed Hadi etc. ‘Filmindia’, in its review of the film in September 1941 issue, has given its verdict on this film as ‘a sensible film with a good story, good direction and good music’. The story of the film based on the said review is as under:

Budhwa (Mazhar Khan), a blacksmith by profession, leads a honest life. He is successful in his venture. His ugly appearance does not fetch him the life partner and he is too shy to woo one. He has his companion, Kalwa who assists him in his work. Both of them are contended and happy with what they are until Chelkaka, a bird fancier brings up the question of Budhwa’s marriage.

Budhwa, at first, is diffident but soon warms up at the prospects of getting a life companion. He agrees for the marriage. Chelkaka finds him a nice girl Maina (Bibbo) who is already in love with Vasant Thakur (E Billimoria), a young jagirdar of the place.

However, against the wishes of Maina, the marriage with Badhwa is fixed by her parents. On the wedding night, Maina runs away to meet her lover Vasant Thakur and to have a tryst with him. Unfortunately, Vasant cannot keep his words to Maina due to ruses used by her cousin Seeta (Miss Moti) who is also in love with Vasant.

Now Maina cannot go back to her parents as she has been outcast by the community. She ultimately decides to go back to Budhwa and spend her life in the service of Budhwa as repentance for what she did for him on the wedding night. Instead of walking to Budhwa’s house, the fate takes her to him by way of an accident. Budhwa, without knowing the identity of victim, treats her like his sister. In the meanwhile, Vasant has agreed to marry Seeta despite his love for Maina.

Once again, Chelkaka, the bird fancier, comes in the picture to know about the Maina who has taken shelter in Budhwa’s house without revealing her identity. Maina explains the whole story to Budhwa. After knowing her side of the story, Budhwa rushes to Vasant who finds him at the altar ready to get married to Seeta. In the climax, the dirty tricks played by Seeta are exposed and she confesses her wrong doings. Maina gets back Vasant. Budhwa is once again alone (akela) and this time without his work companion, Kalwa.

The character of Budhwa who is a lonely soul alternating his life between hopes and disappointment, between desires and resigned to the fate and between happiness and sighs must be a challenging one for Mazhar Khan as he has to display his acting prowess under different emotional state. The fat that at the end of the film, he remains lonely may have earned his character the sympathy of the audience.

AKELA (1941) had 11 songs, all penned by P L Santoshi which were set to music by Khan Mastana. I could locate two songs from the film sung by Bibbo on YT. However, I am presenting a different song which I heard for the first time only yesterday and I liked it very much. The song is ‘piya na bole bulaay haari’. Miss Moti’s name has been accredited as singer who also acted in the film. Miss Moti’s voice in the song is new to me and her voice closely resembles that of Rajkumari Dubey. Miss Moti has also sung one more song in the film under discussion.

It may be noted that Miss Moti had been associated with almost all the films produced under the banner of Paramount Pictures since 1934. It is quite possible that she may have rendered her own songs in the films in which she acted in the 30s.

Since the song was not available on YT, I have made a video from mp3 clip of the song and have uploaded the same on YT.

With this song, ‘Akela’ (1941) makes its debut in the Blog.

Atul ji/Sudhir ji,
Shalin Bhatt, one of the well-informed uploaders of the Hindi film songs of 1930s and 1940s has commented on my videe of the song that the voice in the song sounds like that of Rajkumari Dubey. I concur with his observation.

It is quite possible that the song was picturised on Miss Moti. Hence as per those days’ convention, her name appeared as singer on the 78 rpm record.
