Different countries have their own Children’s day. For India, 14 november is celebrated as Children’s day. So today(14 november 2016) is Children’s day in India.

We have discussed quite a few Children’s songs in this blog during Children’s day as well on other days. One would like to think that there are not too many songs in Hindi movies that can be described as children’s songs.

Guess what ! I came across a fantastic children’s songs a few months ago. I earmarked it to be discussed on the next children’s day, which happens to be today.

This movie is quite a well known movie with well known songs that in fact have gone on to become immortal. I am surprised that a song as fantastic as this ended up remaining so unsung that I was not even aware of it till sometime back.

The movie is “Kaabuliwaala”(1961). Yes, it is a movie that has such immortal songs as Ae mere pyaare watan, Ganga aaye kahaan se, and O saba kahna mere dildaar ko .

“Kaabuliwaala”(1961) was based on a story of the same name penned by Ravindranath Tagore. This is a moving tale of a Kabuliwaala wo leaves his family (including his daughter) behind in Afghanistan and comes to Calcutta where he befriens a small girl called Mini, who reminds him of his daughter back home. This is a tale that I read in my Hindi text book in 1970s and I regard this story as one of the best story that I have ever come across.

When I checked up, I found taht this movie had four songs in it. With the above three songs already discussed, only one song was left to be discussed. When I searched for the remaining song and located it, I felt as if I had hit paydirt-as they said in American novels :). What a gem of a song !

This song is a dream song, where Mini, the young girl, is missing the Kabuliwaala whom she had not seen for several days. In this song, a bird takes her to the old woman living in the moon. That old woman tells Mini where to find Kabuliwaala. Following the clues given by the old woman, Mini located Kabuliwaala.

This great fun song is sung by Ranu Mukherji, Savita Bannerji, Usha Mangeshkar and Hemant Kumar, with the voice of Asit Sen , the comedian (playing Bhola, the domestic help in Mini’s household) is also audible.

Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music of this song is composed by Salil Chaudhary.

I have not been able to get a few words right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections wherever applicable.

With this fantastic children’s song, “Kabuliwaala”(1961) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

I loved this song during its time. Really an apt choice for children’s day.
Yes, compared to the two immortal songs ‘Aaye Kahan se…’ & ‘Ae mere pyare watan..’ this song was less played and slowly faded from my memory. It was a good feeling to hear it again.
Thanks for the post
