“Valmiki”(1946) was directed by Bhal Jee Pendharkar for Prabhakar Pictures, Bombay. This pauranik (mythological) movie about the author of Ramayana had Shanta apte, Prithviraj Kapoor, Leela, Baburao Pendharkar, Vinay Kale, Jaishankar, Raj Kapoor, Pratima Devi, Bhimrao Kale etc in it.

This by now obscure movie had ten songs in it.

Here is the first song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Saraswati Rane. Mahesh Gupta is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Rao Vyas.

Video of this song is available but I am unable to identify the lady lip syncing this song. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her.

I have not been able to get a few words right in the lyrics including an important word that gets repeated often. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections as applicable in the lyrics.

With this song, “Valmiki”(1946) makes its debut in the blog.

Song-Dekho ri sakhi phoolon se (Valmiki)(1946) Singer-Saraswati Rane, Lyrics-Mahesh Gupta, MD-Shankar Rao Vyas

dekho ri sakhi
phoolon se ?? dagariya
dekho ri sakhi

dekho ri sakhi
phoolon se ?? dagariya

Atul ji,

The actress is Leela Chandragiri also known as Miss Leela or simply Leela in credit titles. She mostly worked with the films of Bhalji Pendharkar and V Shantaram. She was married to Bhalji Pendharkar.

By the way, V Shantaram was the first cousin of Bhalji Pendharkar, their mothers being the real sisters. Master Vinayak, the father of Nanda, was his half brother. Baburao Pendharkar was Bhalji’s younger brother who acted in Hindi and Marathi films.

Bhalji Pendharkar was the recipient of Dadasaheb Palke 1991

What a great man and filmmaker was Bhalji Pendharkar can be judged from a short biography, the link of which is given below:

Saraswati Rane
Ram Rajya (1943)
Dev Kanya (1946)
Mahasati Tulsi Vrinda (1947)
Rambaan (1948)
Jai Bhim (1949)
Ramayan (1954)
Bhumika (1977)
