Recently, I had the occasion to read an essay titled The Magical World of Bombay Talkies, written by Professor Lalit Joshi. The paper has been written in the context of making of the cultural space for the nation in waiting and the role of the Bombay Talkies Ltd. (BT) in the evolution of Bombay film industry. The essay sets out the growth of BT since its inception in 1934 until it closed down in 1954.

After going through the essay, I noted that the entire history of BT can be divided into four distinct phases. The first phase was from its inception in 1934 to 1940 when Himanshu Rai, the founder was in the helm of the affairs of BT. During this period, films like ‘Jawaani Ka Nasha’ (1935), ‘Achhut Kanya’ (1936), ‘Jeewan Naiyya’ (1936), ‘Nirmala’ (1938), ‘Kangan’ (1939) etc were produced. During this period, almost all films were directed by the German director, Franz Osten. The story and screen-plays were mainly written by Niranjan Pal, son of Bipin Chandra Pal, the freedom fighter. During this period, Ashok Kumar who was a laboratory assistant in BT was cast as a hero for the first time in the film ‘Jeewan Naiyya’ (1936).

The second phase was from 1940-45 when Devika Rani was in-charge of BT (her designation was Production Controller) after the death of Himanshu Rai. During this period, BT produced many box office hit films like ‘Bandhan’ (1940), ‘Punar Milan’ (1940), ‘Jhoola’ (1941), ‘Basant’ (1942) ‘Kismet’ (1943) etc. During this period, Amiya Chakravarty joined BT as director and Gyan Mukherjee and Shashdhar Mukherjee consolidated their positions in the hierarchy of BT. This phase can be called as a consolidation phase for BT in terms of financial position as the films mentioned above were runaway successes at the box office.

However, in the background of the unprecedented success of ‘Kismet’ (1943), serious differences developed between Shashdhar Mukherjee and Devika Rani. The result was that Shashdhar Mukherjee, Ashok Kumar, Gyan Mukherjee and Sound Recordist, Savak Vacha along with 10 others left BT and set up Filmistan in 1943. Coupled with such a large exodus of important persons from BT, the failures of films like ‘Chaar Aankhen’ (1944), ‘Jwaar Bhata’ (1944) and ‘Pratima’ (1945) made the financial position of BT precarious. During this difficult period, Devika Rani bid good bye to BT in 1945.

The third phase was between 1945 -50 when Devika Rani sold her shares in BT to Shiraz Ali Hakim, the owner of the Famous Studio in 1945 and quit the film industry in 1945 after her marriage with Savtsolv Roerich, the son of the famous painter Nicholas Roerich. After roping in Nitin Bose from New Theatres as director, BT produced ‘Milan’ (1946) which was successful at the box office. However, after partition, Shiraz Ali Hakim sold his shares in BT to Govindram Sakseria, the Cotton trader and migrated to Pakistan.

It was at this stage that Ashok Kumar along with Savak Vacha and the German Cinematographer Josef Wirsching returned to BT. During this period, BT produced successful films like ‘Majboor’ (1948), ‘Ziddi’ (1948), ‘Mahal’ (1949), and ‘Sangram (1950). However, the success of these films did not improve the financial position of BT. In 1950, Ashok Kumar and Savak Vacha quit BT for the second time.

The fourth and final phase was from 1950 to 1954 when BT was run by the workers’ cooperatives. During this period, BT produced ‘Mashaal’ (1950), ‘Maa’ (1952), ‘Tamaasha’ (1952) and ‘Baadbaan’ (1954). Ashok Kumar, Dev Anand, Meena Kumari and many more had worked for these films free of charge. All these films failed at the box office putting BT in serious financial problems. The new owner of BT, Tolaram Jalan permanently closed the gate of BT in 1954 and curtains finally fell on one of the finest film production companies.

MAJBOOR (1948) was the first film produced under the banner of Bombay Talkies during the third phase of its history when both Ashok Kumar and the sound recordist, Savak Vacha returned to BT from Filmistan to salvage the banner. The film had Shyam, Munawwar Sultana, Sohanlal, Dar Kashmiri (Jeevan), Shivraj, Indurani, Amir Bano etc. The film was produced as a ‘stop gap’ before planning some ambitious films for the banner. This was evident from the fact that Najeer Ajmeri, a character actor in the pay role of BT was entrusted to direct the film who also wrote the story.

The theme of the film can be called as daring in the context of the communal situation after the partition of the country. It is the story of Chandu (Shyam), a Muslim boy who has been brought up as Hindu. Unaware of his origin, Chandu loves Laali (Munawwar Sultana), a Hindu girl. When he comes to know about his origin, the inter-religious differences comes in the way of their union rendering him ‘majboor’ (helpless). It appears that due to prevailing communal situation in the country, the director-story writer chose the tragic end for the film. The film was a box office success which BT was not expecting such a success. The film completed silver jubilee in Bombay (18 weeks in Capitol theatre and 7 weeks in Kamal theatre. It appears that those days, silver jubilee weeks were calculated cumulatively).

MAJBOOR (1948) had 8 songs, all penned by Nazim Panipati which were set to music by Ghulam Haider. 7 songs from the film have already been covered in the Blog. I am presenting the 8th and the last song ‘dekho ji dekho ji mori baiyaan pakad ke’ from the film. The song is sung by Hameeda Bano and G M Durrani.

With this song, all the songs from ‘Majboor’ (1948) have been covered in the Blog.
