India got political independence on 15 august 1947, but the course that this newly independent nation wanted to take was not decided for qwuite some time. It was on 26 january 1950 that the nation gave itself its constitution and it was resolved that the nation would be a republic where all citizens would enjoy equal rights.

26 january 1950 was a momentous occasion for this nation. Not too many people today may be in a position to realise what a momentous day that was. It was for the first time in the history of India that all citizens were guaranteed equality, irrespective of their status in society. It was also resolved that India would be a democracy and it would be governed according to the constitution.

Now, 67 years later, the saplings that was sowed on that day has taken firm root and has grown up into a giant banyan tree.

The nation has gone through many ups and downs during these 67 years. Lots and lots of people have contributed in making this nation what it is today. Today, the nation, by and large, is in a much better position that what was the case till say three decades ago.

I may have attended my first republic day in late 1960s as a young school kid in my school. I do not recall the occasion clearly, but those were the days when school kids would take their younger (non school going) siblings to the school and the young one would eagerly come along, hoping to get sweets on the occasion after the flag hoisting. 🙂 I too may have taken my non school going younger sibling with me during my first republic day. 🙂

The “nanhe munne” raahi of 1960s aspired to become “desh ke sipaahi” and “desh ka sahaara” when they grew up.

badaa ho ke desh kaa sahaaraa banoongaa
duniyaa ki aankhon kaa taaraa banoongaa
rakhoongaa oonchaa tirangaa parcham
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!
Nanha munna raahi hoon
desh ka sipaahi hoon
bolo mere sang
jai Hind, jai Hind,
Jai Hind
jai Hind, jai Hind

Kids of 1960s are now in their 50s and they are actually running the nation. I hope we all are actively contributing in making the nation great through our own deeds instead of hoping that some one else has to do this job and not us.

I hope that we display our patriotism through our acts rather than symbolism. Observing rules when no one is looking, and not adopting short cut methods and seeking to a proper work- these are some of the real in depth acts of patriotism that are far more effective in taking the nation forward than just skin deep acts of patriotism.

Lots of people have contributed in taking this country ahead. Among them, the contribution of our security people, most of them anonymous, is enormous. It is because of them that we are in this situation where we are able to celebrate our national festivals as well as other occasions safely.

On this occasion, let us salute our security forces. As a tribute to them, here is this song from “Jurm Aur Sazaa”(1974), which is sung by Rafi. Ram Bhardwaj is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy republic day 2017.

[Ed: This song appears in two parts in the film, once at the start of the film and second time close to the end of the film. Both parts have one stanza each.]
