Blog Day :

4400 Post No. : 15783

I cut my HFM teeth in late 1960s when old order was giving way to new. Old order meant Rafi as the male playback singer of choice, Shammi Kapoor as the heart throb, and Shankar Jaikishan as the music directors of choice for big banners. In a matter of a few years or so, the musical order was turned upside down. When the dus settled, we found Shammi Kapoor being replaced by Rajesh Khanna, Rafi by Kishore Kumar and Shankar Jaikishan by R D Burman.

I became a young music lover sometime in mid to late 1960s. From being used to Rafi voice blaring from loudspeakers, I found a new male voice beginning to blare out of loudspeakers. Alongwith rest of the population, I too was mesmerised by this voice. The vesry first time I listened to the voice of Kishore Kumar, i loved it. the song was the iconic “Padosan”(1968) song-“mere saamne waali khidki”.

Rajesh Khanna meanwhile took the movie world by storm with “Aradhana”(1969), and that was followed by a string of hits. I would have loved to watch all those Rajesh Khanna songs, but I ended up watching “Haathi Mere Saathi”(1971) and “Apna Desh”(1971), that is all. By the time my movie watchin spree began in right earnest in june 1978, Rajesh Khanna had lost his crown as the first superstar of Hindi movies. That crown had passed on to Amitabh Bachchan.

Unlike Rajesh Khanna, Kishore Kumar never lost the crown of the top male playback singer. He continued to hold this crown troughout his life, till 1987. What longevity ! It is not easy to hold on to the top spot, as we see from the example of Rajesh Khanna. If Kishore Kumar could do it for close to two decades till his death, they this speaks highly of his durability and saleability. In fact, I feel that he almost singlehandedly held up the quality of playback singing during 1980s after all other leading playback singers had passed away.

On the occasion of Kishore Kumar’s 91st birth anniversary today on 4 august 2020 here is an archtypical Rajesh Khanna song sung by Kishore Kumar. The song is a duet from “Shahzaada”(1972). This movie was directed by K Shankar for Amar Chhaaya, Bombay. The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Raakhee, Madan Puri, Veena, Karan Dewan, Pandari Bai, Jairaj, Sunder, Mohan Choti, Gulshan Baawra, Badri Prasad, Halam, Varalakshmi, Shreeram Shastri etc in it. The movie had five songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from “Shehzaada”(1972) to appear in the blog. the song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. The song is penned by Rajinder Krishan. Music is composed by RD Burman. This roothhna manaana genre of song is picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Raakhi.

Song-Na jaiyyo chhod ke na jaiyyo meri raani (Shehzaada)(1972) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

Na jaiyyo o
Na jaiyyo o o
Chhod ke na jaiyyo meri raani
Na jaiyyo o o
Chhod ke na jaiyyo meri raani
Haan jaayegi saath tere
Jaayegi saath tere
Meri zindgaani
Haan Na jaiyyo
Chhod ke na jaiyyo meri raani
Na jaiyyo
Hoye
Chhodke na jaiyyo meri raani

Baagon mein kaliyaan khilne ke din
Baagon mein kaliyaan khilne ke din
Ankhiyon se ankhiyaan milne ke din
Hey ae
Baagon mein kaliyaan khilne ke din
Ankhiyon se ankhiyaan milne ke din
O ho
De doonga jaan meri
De doonga jaan meri
Baat jo na maani haan
Naa jaaun
Chhodke naa jaaun tohe jaani
Ho kadmon mein tere meri
Kadmon mein tere meri
Phool si jawaani
Ho jaani jaaun
Naa jaaun
Naa jaaun
Chhodke naa jaaun tohe jaani

Tu hi sawera
Tu hi meri shaam
Tu hi sawera
Tu hi meri shaam
Duniya se pyaara
Mujhe tera naam re
Tu hi sawera
Tu hi meri shaam
Duniya se pyaara
Mujhe tera naam
Likh de jiya pe mere
Likh de jiya pe mere
Preet ki kahaani
Ho jaani jaaun
Naa jaaun
naa jaaaun
Chhodke naa jaaun tohe jaani

Kaahe ko roothhi thhi
pehle Gujariya
Jaanoon thhi manaa lega mera
Sawariyaa aa
Aankh micholi ki ye
Aankh micholi ki ye
Reet hai puraani
Ho jaani jaaun
Naa jaaun
naa jaaun
Chhodke naa jaaun tohe jaani

Ho
Jaayegi saath tere
haan
jaayegi saath tere
Meri zindgaani
Haan
Na jaiyyo oye
Chhodke na jaiyyo meri raani

Finally we end day number 4400 of the blog’s existence with a Kishore Kumar for Rajesh Khanna song?
We have had Kishore kumar for Randhir Kapoor, Jeetendra (two times), Shashi Kapoor & Rajesh Khanna. Another rare occurrence in recent times- 5 pots in a day.
Once again, missing Kishore Kumar on his 91st birth anniversary. Hope is having a good time with his friends “up there” as Rajaji has said in his post
