Songs from Artiste Name Films….Second Season….No. 5
——————————————————————-

Do you know who these people were ?

Elizer, S M Hadi, Miss Gangoo, Jagdish, D.Sarkari, Surajram, M.Isaq, Hyder Shah, Miss Manjula, Keki Adjania, S.Baburao, Baba Vyas, Rustam Irani, Master Fakir……the list is long.

I am sure hardly anyone knows them. Mind you, they are not Extras, they are in the credits of a film. OK, let me try with another set. Perhaps you might recognise someone.

Vaskar, K B Laal, Raja Babu, Chandrika, Chunilal, S Alam, Pt. Kaul, Javdekar, tarun Kumar, Swarup Rani, Kunjuru, Haridas, Dilawar, Sudha Apte etc etc ….The list is long. Still No ? Ok. Last Chance. I am sure, this time you will identify a few names at least…..

Tiwari, Chandbala, Indira Bansal, Gulab, Heeralal, Murad, Moolchand, Nazir kashmiri, Jankidas, Abu Bakar, Sankatha prasad, Narbada Shankar, Chaman Puri, Mirajkar etc etc. The List is long. Atlast, you could identify some actors.

Friends, all the above artistes fall under the category of “Character actors”. The first and second list was of Character artists from the 30’s and 40’s films. The third list was from the 50’s films, hence some names were familiar.

Unfortunately, the condition of the character artistes is like this. No recognition, no sustainable payments, no guarantee of work and no appeal for injustice. Lately, of course, there is an association which looks after their interests to a great extent.

However, there are some character artistes who make a permanent impression on the audience with their acting style. Their names become unforgettable and they guarantee “Paisa Vasool” performance. Some such artistes were Omprakash, Mirajkar, Nazir kashmiri aka “Ramukaka”, Nazir Hussain, Badri prashad, Nana Palshikar Leela Mishra etc etc. One such artiste was KANHAIYALAL CHATURVEDI. He entered the cinema world to become a Lyricist and story/dialogue writer, but ended up as an actor. No one writes on character artistes, everyone writes on Hero or aHeroines only. Our today’s Hero is Kanhaiyalal.

Pandit Kanhaiyalal Chaturvedi was born on 15-12-1910 in Banares. His father was Bhairodutt and mother was Parvati Devi. He studied only upto 4th standard. When he was 15 year old he was given the family Kirana shop to manage, but due to his hobby of seeing dramas, the shop had to be closed. Then he was tried on a Chakki. Here also he failed. Seeing his inclination, his father started his own Drama company called ‘ Sanatan Dharm Natak Samaj’. Kanhaiya started doing odd jobs in that company.

After father’s death, his elder brother Sankata prasad went to Bombay and joined Sagar Film co. Kanhaiya also went to Bombay . There he wrote a drama ” 15 August ke baad” and wanted to stage it, but it was censored too much and he failed in this too.

He left for Calcutta and joined the drama company of Agha Hashr. He got a good role of ‘Tabalchi’ in it. But he left this too and went to Allahabad joining a Ramleela group where he presented one drama also. Once Chimanlal Desai of Sagar had come there. He saw Kanhaiya and called him to Bombay. He only wanted to write songs, stories and dialogues, but fate made him an actor only.

He first did an extra role in the film ” Sagar ka Sher”. He was noticed by Motilal and he took him to Mehboob. He was given a role in the film “Gramophone Singer-38″. His next big role was in the film ‘ Sadhana”-39, it was followed by Bhole Bhale-39, Ek hi Raasta-39 and Service limited-39.

In 1940, his life’s most important role of ‘Sukhilala’ was done by him in the film Aurat-1940. After 17 years, Mehboob chose only him to do the same role in the remake “Mother India-1957”.

Kanhaiyalal was known to be a “Scene Eater” by other stars. Even Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Rajesh khanna, Ashok kumar etc appreciated his dialogue delivery and acting. In his private life, Kanhaiayalal was very down to earth. Though he could easily afford it, he never bought a car and always travelled in Bus, Train or a Taxi.

He worked in 141 films and surprisingly 7 songs were picturised on him,on screen.Besides acting, Kanhaiyalal wrote dialogues, stories and songs in films. He wrote 57 songs in 8 films namely, Sadhana-39, Comrades-39, Bhole Bhale-39, Sanskar-40, Civil Marriage-40, Radhika-41, Nirdosh-41 and Kasauti-41.

As an actor his last film was Ek aur Sangram-1982. His dedication for work was always appreciated. During the shooting of the film Aurat-40, the set fell on him and he was injured, but he told Mehboob,-‘ Don’t stop the shooting. Take the shots.’ After the shooting, he was given treatment.

Some of his films were Behen, Radhika, Lal haveli, Ganga jamuna, Sautela bhai, Grihasthi, Upkar, Ram aur Shyam, Teen bahuraniyan, Jeevan mrityu, Hum panch etc etc.

He gave his last film shot for film Hathkadi-82. Kanhaiyalal Chaturvedi died on 14-8-1982, when he was 72 years old. Kanhaiyalal worked in innumerable films. He died in Delhi, leaving behind his wife, two sons and four daughters, and hardly any property. Even the body of the celebrated artiste could not be brought to Bombay, his home.

Today’s song is from the film Kanhaiya-1980. There was another film with the same title in 1959. Raj Kapoor and Nutan had acted in it.

Kanhaiya-80 was made by Sonnar Films, directed by Khalid Sami and it’s music was by the pair of Basu- Manohari. Basu Chakraborty (23-1-1928 to 27-7-2001) and Manohari Singh (8-3-1931 to 13-7-2010) composed 30 songs together in 7 films, namely- Sabse Bada Rupaiya-76, Yasmin-78, Bin Baap ka Beta-78, Kanhaiya-80, Jeena hai Pyar mein-83, Chatpati-83 and Bluffmaster !-2005.

The cast of the film was Naseeruddin Shah, Amjad khan, Asha Sachdev, Farida jalal, Master Raju, kanhaiyalal, Dev Kumar and many more. The story of the film was…

Sharda lives a wealthy lifestyle along with her widower dad, Thakur Ranvir Singh, in Bombay, India. She incurs her dad’s displeasure when she elopes and gets married to Jaichand Prakash, a poor man. She gets pregnant and Jaichand passes away, leaving her alone to raise their son Kanhaiyaa.

As soon as Kanhiayaa celebrates his 9th birthday, Sharda too passes away forcing Kanhaiya to find shelter at Bal Kalyan Anaathalay, run by a cruel manager named Makhanlal. After getting abused at the orphanage Kanhaiyaa escapes to Mumbai and lands in the net of Madhav Singh and Rahim, touts who teach male orphans to become thieves and robbers.

Destiny brings Kanhaiya to his estranged maternal grandfather who recognises him and takes him home. However, fate has other plans in store for him as he gets abducted once again by Madhav Singh’s men. Finally the chief of the Anathalaya helps them to locate and free kanhaiya and the culprits are arrested by the police. The Grandfather gets his Grandson safely.

Kanhaiyalal had acted in this film. This was one of his last few films, before he departed from this world. The film Kanhaiya-80 makes its Debut on the Blog.

This is sheer coincidence…. I saw this movie only yesterday and had filed it away as a movie whose songs are yet to debut on the blog. And here it is.
It was an interesting movie and I was surprised to see Naseeruddin Shah with Mehndi colored hair
Thank you for this post Sirji
