Hullo Atuldom

Indian films have seen many jodis (meaning duos) of writers, music directors, actors, actresses, hero-heroine etc. Something about these duos or pairs or jodis make them appealing in the minds of movie-watchers. Can we think of Dilip Kumar sans Madhubala, Raj Kapoor sans Nargis, Dharmendra sans Hema Malini, Amitabh Bachchan sans Shashi Kapoor or Vinod Khanna or Rishi Kapoor or many of the actresses that he was regularly paired with? Similarly we think of Salim Khan & Javed Akhtar in the same breath as also Husnlal-Bhagatram, Kalyanji- Anandji and Shankar- Jaikishan. What I have mentioned are pairs in Hindi films, I am sure there would have been & will be such pairs in films of other languages too and all of which were popular once upon a time & are still recalled fondly. When we speak of these pairs we cannot think of one without the other.

Shankar- Jaikishan is one entity as also Laxmikant- Pyarelal.

Shankar Singh Ram Singh Raghuwanshi was the older of the duo and was born on 15th October 1922. Jaikishan Dahyabhai Panchal was born on 4th November 1929. One played the tabla and learnt the art formally while the other was good at the harmonium. It is well known that the two met at office of a Gujarati movie director and developed a rapport which saw them work together at the Prithvi Theatre in Bombay (as Mumbai used to be called). Apart from following their musical pursuits they also played parts in plays staged at Prithvi. They paired up when Raj Kapoor assigned them the task of giving music for his “Barsaat” that released in 1949 and from there there was no looking back. They were a constant in all of Raj Kapoor’s films till 1970 when they gave award winning music to ‘Mera Naam Joker’. It is said that Raj Kapoor had a bank of tunes composed by this pair which he used in many of his subsequent movies but gave credit to the composers he had signed for that particular movie. Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd Rafi were the duos favourite playback singers but for them Mukesh was the voice for most of their songs filmed on Raj Kapoor and they patronized Manna Dey who sang many of their popular songs. They used Kishore Kumar for the iconic “zindagi ek safar hai suhana” They worked as a team with Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra but have popular songs with other lyricists too.

Today, on the occasion of Jaikishan’s birth anniversary we are revisiting the 1971 release “Ek Naari Ek Brahmachari”. It was said to be the remake of a 1968 released Telugu movie starring A. Nageshwara Rao- “Brahmachari”. I recall seeing the Hindi movie ages ago. On reading the synopsis of these movies I realized that I have seen this movie in Malayalam too as “Minnaram” (meaning Lighthouse/ Beacon) which came in 1994 with Mohanlal in the lead.

So “Ek Naari Ek Brahmachari” was the story of a young man (Jeetendra) who is an avowed Brahmachari (that means espoused celibacy). His collegemate likes him because of his good character. But circumstances lead to the lady entering the brahmachari’s home claiming to be his child’s mother and putting him in a spot. As the movie progresses misunderstandings created among the members of the brahmachari’s family are cleared and the identity of the real parents of the child is revealed.

The following two songs of the movie are present on the blog:

Here is the next. It is sung by Mohd. Rafi and has Jeetendra lip-syncing. It is written by Kiran Kalyani (never heard this name before). The song has a lovely prelude which is the signature of the S-J duo.

Song-Charaag kis ke ghar ka hai (Ek Naari Ek Brahmchaari)(1971) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Kiran Kalyani, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

chiraag kis ke ghar ka hai
tu laal kis jigar ka hai
kanwal hai kaun taal ka
tu kis chaman ka phool hai
charaag kis ke ghar ka hai
tu laal kis jigar ka hai
kanwal hai kaun taal ka
tu kis chaman ka phool hai
charaag kis ke ghar ka hai

kisi ki neend todna
ki maa ki god chhodna
kisi ka man jhinjhodna
ye kaisa khel hai tera
kisi ki neend todna
ki maa ki god chhodna
kisi ka man jhinjhodna
ye kaisa khel hai tera
ye kaisa khel hai tera

ye kya tera usool hai
ye kya tera usool hai
kamal hai kaun taal ka
tu kis chaman ka phool hai
charaag kis ke ghar ka hai

kali ke paas roop mein
tera janam mahaan hai
tu devta samaan hai
sunaayega jo tu mujhe
kali ke pass roop mein
tera janam mahaan hai
tu devta samaan hai
sunayega jo tu mujhe
sunaayega jo tu mujhe
vo faisla kubool hai
vo faisala kubool hai
kamal hai kaun taal ka
tu kis chaman ka phul hai
charaag kis ke ghar ka hai

ulajh gayi hai aatma
bata de aaj sach hai kya
ki kaun laage tu mera
o nanhe munne devta
o nanhe munne devta
tu kis ke man ki bhool hai
tu kis ke man ki bhool hai
kamal hai kaun taal ka
tu kis chaman ka phul hai
charaag kis ke ghar ka hai
