Today 11th November 2022 is the sixty-seventh birthday of the renowned Ghazal Singer Talat Aziz.
Talat Aziz was born on 11th November 1956 in Hyderabad, India.
Here is a brief about his biography and his journey to films which I have taken from an online website which had this long biography of him mentioned with one of his LP record. I have not taken it in all but edited it for a brief presentation here today.

Aziz was born to Abdul Azeem Khan and Sajida Abid, a famous Urdu writer and poet. He attended Hyderabad Public School and then joined The Indian Institute of Management and Commerce for his B.Com (Hons) Course.
His family loved fine arts and used to organise Mehfils in their house, inviting artists and poets like Jagjit Singh and Jan Nisar Akhtar. This greatly influenced him and he started learning music from an early age. Aziz is married to Bina Aziz, a famous painter and art curator. They have two sons, Adnan Aziz and Shayaan Aziz.
Talat Aziz took his initial training in music from Kirana Gharana. He was trained primarily by Ustad Samad Khan and later by Ustad Faiyyaz Ahmed Khan. After the initial training, Aziz learnt music from the Ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan. On many occasions, like on a concert tour of the US and Canada in 1986, he shared the stage with him on concerts in India and abroad. Mehdi Hasan Saheb once remarked on Talat’s purity of voice and how well he learnt and imbibed Mehdi Saheb’s knowledge and ‘gaayaki’ and yet carving his own path.
He released his first album in Feb 1980, under the baton of Jagjit Singh. Jagjit Singh composed this album titled ‘Jagjit Singh presents Talat Aziz’. This was a runaway hit and the ghazals from this album like ‘Kaise Sukoon Paoon, Chahenge Tujhe par… to name a few which are still favourites of all ghazal lovers.
Subsequently in 1981 Khayyam Saheb the legendary music director introduced Talat Aziz in the classic film ‘Umrao Jaan’ with the famous ghazal’ Zindagi Jab bhi’ and followed it by ‘Bazaar’, with the immortal ghazal ‘ Phir Chhidi Raat’ which he sang along with Lata Mangeshkar.
He has also sung film songs composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal in the film Dhun (where he also acted as a main lead and sang a bhajan along with Mehdi Hasan). Also the song he sung under Rajesh Roshan in the film ‘Daddy ‘ Aaina mujhse meri’ which became very popular.
All these numbers are still most sought after in his concerts. Talat has also composed music for ‘TV serials’ and has also acted in several of them. He composed music for ‘tele-serials’ like ‘Deewar’, ‘Baaz’, ‘Adhikaar’, ‘Ghutan’, ‘Sailaab’, ‘Aashirwaad’ and the magnum opus, ‘Noorjehan’. He also composed the music and sang too for a feature film titled ‘Majaz-Ae Ghame dil’ recently in ‘2016’. This film was produced by Shakeel Akhtar and was a biography of the iconic poet ‘Majaz Luckhnawi’. As an actor he has acted in serials like ‘Sahil’, ‘Manzil’, ‘Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayee’ and Noorjehan a TV serial written by Nida Fazli.

There is a long list of his celebrity friends from his fraternity and of course from the film industry as well. There are many famous public and political personalities who appreciated him and are a big admirers of him. There is also a long list of his concerts and the feathers which he has in his cap coming for the appreciation of his art and love people showered on him.
Today I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Dhun’. This song has been in my memory since long though I am now forgetting the dates. I think the album of this movie was released in ‘1991’ as mentioned in the above article, but as per’ Hindi Filmography’ (1986-2000) this movie was passed by Censor Board on 31.01.1996.
(I am some time loosing track of those years in my life 🙂 ).
I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.
The above article also mentions the following about this movie.
‘Dhun’ which was directed by Mahesh Bhatt where had Talat Aziz and his co-stars were Anupam Kher and Sangeeta Bijlani with the music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi. The music album was released by HMV in 1991 at a glittering event where all the who’s who of the Indian Film industry were present. The music album was a hit. Songs like ‘Yaad Aane wale’, ‘Laagi Prem dhun laagi’, ‘Main Aatma’ are still remembered by music lovers. One interesting fact is that Mehdi Hasan sang a bhajan along with Talat “Main aatma tu Parmaatma” for the first time in an Indian film.
When I fall in love with music I was always aware of the songs Talat Aziz sung for ‘Umrao Jaan’ and ‘Baazaar’ but during those years (1985-1988) I came across his ghazal album ‘Suroor’ which had the ‘ghazal’ ‘aisa lagtaa hai zindagi tum ho’ which I liked very much and love it very much even now. Those days one of my bosses who was interested more in listening ghazals had a lot of collection of cassettes and I got to listen many of Talat Aziz’s albums then.
Today, I am more than happy that I had this opportunity to present a song and wishing a very happy birthday to Talaz Aziz Saab on the blog.
We wish him a very happy and cheerful birthday with a happy, healthy, wealthy and peaceful life ahead in the future.
Let us now enjoy today’s composition …
With this song, this movie ‘Dhun-1996’ makes its debut on the blog.

ek deewaanaa
saari raat na soya

laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho jaagi prem dhun jaagi
sabse chhupke

miltey rahe chaand chakori
sabse chhupke
chori chori
miltey rahe chaand chakori
khoob chali ye aankh michauri
aankh michauri
jab tak baat rahi ghar mein
ye bhed na koyi jaanaa
akhbaaron mein khabar chhapi
jab ladki ghar se bhaagi re bhaagi
laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho jaagi prem dhun jaagi
prem
prem ka koyi naam na lena
haathon se dil thhaam na lena
prem ka koyi naam na lena
haathon se dil thhaam na lena
sar pe ye ilzaam na lena
naam na lena
prem se isiliye to sabko
log manaa karte hain
prem mein chhodke duniya
kitne log huye bairaagi
re laagi
laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho jaagi prem dhun jaagi
la la la la la la la la la la laa

la la la la la la la la la la laa
la la la la la laa
koyi isko chhoo na paaye
aankhon se dekhi na jaaye
koyi isko chhoo na paaye
aankhon se dekhi na jaaye
cheez hai ye kya haaye haaye
haaye haaye
prem ki dhun aataa jaata
ik mast hawaa ka jhonka
koyi pakad sakaa na peechhe
saari duniya bhaagi

laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
prem ki dhun jo sun letaa
wo rehtaa nahin akela
laakhon aur hazaaron uske
ban jaate hain saathi
re saathi
laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho jaagi prem dhun laagi
(ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho jaagi prem dhun jaagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi
ho laagi prem dhun laagi)
