#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Remembering Dev Anand)
—————————————

Today 3rd December’2022 is the eleventh ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ (born on 26th September 1923 – passed away on 3rd December 2011) of the legendary actor Dev Anand.

My father was a big big fan of Dev Anand (BTW I am also a Dev Saab’s fan too) and may be because of that I got to watch many of his movies in my childhood which I remember vaguely. In my childhood we were staying in colony of State Electricity Board and there used to be a weekly screening of Hindi movies which mostly were the older and older movies. Because getting newly released movies were a ‘costly affair’ for the ‘colony club committee’. In this weekly screening I get to watch many of Dev Anand’s black and white movies e.g. ‘Sarhad’, ‘Sharaabi’, ‘Bambai Ka Babu’, etc. and some older movies of sixties and early seventies too. This was the period from 1975 onward and 1977-to-1983 for me, if I remember correctly. Since watching movies and listening songs on radio was common for all in our family I get those songs imbibed on my mind also develop a liking for HFM of golden period e.g. the song ‘hai apnaa dil to aawaraa’ and many other songs. Why I am mentioning only this song is because it was the most favourites of my father and he used to play it on ‘mouth organ’ frequently and in the colony cultural programmes held during festivals.

Well there is long list of Dev Anand’s movies and songs which are favourites of me and even my family today. Like the song ‘phoolon ke rang se’, ‘dil ka bhandwar kare pukaar’, ‘hai apnaa dil to aawaraa’ etc which my daughters too like very much and they are always there in their playlists.

I get to listen to many Dev-Kishore-RDB combination songs daily on FM channels on radio and it is always a great pleasure to listen to them.

What I want to bring to the notice of the readers is that Dev Anand’s magic spell is still upon us and it will be there as long as Hindi movies and HFM will be there. It is not only the people of older generations of my generation who are the ‘fans’ of Dev Anand but even the newer generations and music lovers have fallen in love of him and his songs.

On the occasion of Dev Anand’s ‘remembrance day’ today I am presenting a lesser heard song from the ‘1974’ movie ‘Prem Shastra’. I vaguely remember that this movie was scheduled to be screened in our ‘colony’ in the early eighties but it was cancelled later.

“Prem Shastra-1974” was directed by B.R. Ishara for ‘Nalanda Arts, Bombay.

It was produced by Amar Jeet.

It had Dev Anand, Zeenat Aman, Bindu, I.S. Johar, Abhi Bhattacharya, Sajjan, Anwar Hussain, Murad, Asit Sen, David, Mumtaz Begam, Dulari, Manhar Desai, Mohan Sheri, Lajwanti Sharma, Amrut Patel, Mishrilal and others.

Rehman and Anju Mahendru had a special appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by B.R. Ishara who also directed this movie.
Editing of this movie was done by I.M. Kunnu.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 08.07.1974 with ‘restricted viewing’ certificate. (However in the later years the ‘restricted viewing’ condition was removed for this movie.).

“Prem Shaastra” had seven soundtracks released with five songs, one theme music track, and one title music soundtrack.

All the songs for this movie were written by Anand Bakshi and music for them was composed by Lamikant-Pyarelal.

Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle are the only two voices who have sung the songs in this movie.

Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and on screen it is Dev Anand lip-syncing the song in his ‘characteristic style’. Also seen in the picturisation of this song are Bindu and many others.

I had been longing to introduce this movie on the blog since long and earlier I had planned to present a duet song from this movie. But finally I decided on the today’s song which is a nice song and if we listen to it few times it grows on us.

I had mentioned in my earlier write-ups that I liked such ‘drink driven’ 🙂 songs very much and when you have Kishore Kumar and a Dev Anand combination you are surely going to love it. (Around a month back I had presented a song where the hero of the movie is sings ‘thhodi sharaab pi loon, ho jaaye kuchh sahaara, aye doston tumhe kya ye bhi nahin ganwaara’, but today’s hero is different he publicly ‘announces’ that ‘main sharaab pi rahaa hoon’ 🙂 and warns nobody should ‘disturb’ him):)

Let us listen to today’s song now…

(Note – The audio version of this songs has one extra stanza (the first one) which is not there in the video version of this song.).

With today’s song ‘Prem Shaastra-1974’ makes its debut on the blog.

These are my sentences too. My father was also a Dev Anand fan. But he would see the movies of the other two also as his group of friends were a bag of mixed fans. He would say that he has seen all the movies of that period FDFS
I recall seeing “Prem Shashtra” ages back on TV. A very confusing story where we had a 50+ hero romancing a girl 28 years younger to him. According to my father this movie was a flop.
Thank you Avinashji for bringing this movie on to the blog
